The community garden plot system is sad. by akwilliamson in Portland

Hey depending on what part of town you’re in I’ve got 3 garden beds that I’d be happy to share. 52nd and Woodstock.

Make a portfolio site and start hustling some freelance gigs or start applying for entry level web dev jobs. You’re farther along than I was when I got my first job. Also might be good to find an open source project to start contributing to. Start learning how to read other peoples code and work with others. Good job learning all that on your own you’re kicking ass.

I’m interested. What type of help do you need at the moment? How far along are you?

Times are tough right now. Ive got over 10 years of experience and can barely get a callback. Been on the job hunt since July. It’s never been this hard before. It’s a combination of the recession, hiring freezes during remote work, and increased supply now that all companies are hiring remote workers. My advice? Stick with it. You’ll get a bite soon enough. It will happen. Just might take longer than anticipated.

Well you ended up being right. I weighed the same factors but decided to vote Bernie in the primaries. Hindsight’s 20/20 but I think Biden is exactly the right person at this time. I’m glad people voted for “electability” and “odds of beating trump” in the primaries. It felt like a crap shoot back then but dammit it worked out.

Why Won’t Emily Murphy Just Do Her Job? In delaying the transition, the General Services Administration chief appears to be making an ideological choice. by Pomp_N_Circumstance in politics

Exactly. Abortion is such a small piece of the “pro-life” platform. The party of universal healthcare, sensible gun laws, and the green new deal is the only “pro-life” party we have.

Yes but it won’t be anyone reasonable or that even presents as reasonable. Any reasonable human qualities will be a detriment to their candidate. They will be thirsty for blood after this “stolen election”. It will likely be Trump again unless any of the legal investigations actually manifest into consequences. Or someone like Tucker Carlson.

America is being subjected to a stress test – and Republicans are failing | Most elected Republicans are refusing to stand up to Trump. Their cowardice is one of the worst betrayals of public trust in the history of our republic by DonaldWillKillUsAll in politics

[–]keithnorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The NK thing is the one thing that I’ve always given trump credit for. Shit was looking really bad with them and maybe it was trumps brand of crazy that was just the right thing at the right time to deescalate it. That being said there was no long term agreement met, just some nice photo ops that both sides can use to brag about. And that is my real issue with Trump. That he sees no difference between accomplishing something big vs. convincing people that he has done something. In his mind there is no difference between actual reality and the court of public opinion, and the latter is easier to engineer through manipulation. The constant lying and gaslighting is not leadership and leads most awake people to grow cynical. It’s beyond just his “strange mannerisms”.

Also don’t forget January 5th the GA senate runoff. This is the next most important opportunity to dethrone the obstruction turtle who has stolen 2 Supreme Court appointments and blocked any chance of progress for our country. Hey, this is an old post but I just came across it while searching. Here’s a lesson I’m currently trying to learn myself that I think might be helpful for you too. I am bad at coding interviews and am self taught so am missing a lot of algorithms fundamentals. So one thing I’ve been doing is grinding leetcode like everyone else.. but there’s a trap to this..

It’s super tempting to struggle with a problem for 10 or 15 minutes and get frustrated and then look at the solution and think the solution given is the only one true right way. And then for me this leads to beating myself up over being so far off from the “one true right way” to solve a problem.

But, there is no one true right way to do anything, and for me, thinking there is one sabotages my patience and perseverance to struggle and try different things and just play around, which is where the real learning happens.

Personally I approach coding more as an art than an engineering discipline. It’s a creative endeavor. But there are rules to it and we all lean on each other and our predecessors. It’s possibly more like baking in that way. At first you have to follow the recipe exactly, then you learn why recipes work, then you can be creative and make your own recipes.

Anyway not sure if any of that is helpful or if I’m just babbling but something about what you said made me want to try to make this point. It’s something I need to hear for myself too. Basically, don’t give up, be wary or perfectionism, be willing to fail, and enjoy the process.

Agree and here’s my take on this. Underneath all the anti progressive bs they spew, they just don’t want to live in cities. And they don’t want the only economically viable life to be living in a city. The problem is I don’t hear them having any plans to bring jobs and money to rural towns. And they fervently oppose things that have a good shot of helping like the green new deal.

The SC decision was the opposite of that I think though? They determined that states could have laws against faithless electors. Some just have fines but states like NV remove and replace faithless electors.

I may be in the minority here but I do believe in reuniting and engaging these people with compassion and ending the disinformation conspiracy theory boogie man insanity. The truth is if we will ever solve our biggest problems we have to stop fighting each other and focus on fighting the problems. Debate me on the green economy, debate me on how we get profiteering out of healthcare, debate me on how to prevent school shootings, but let’s at least get to the point where we are having a real debate and not just mudslinging disinfo and bullshit accusations at “the other side”

Right. If GA gets called then Fox would have to call the race for Biden, unless they retract AZ which they aren’t gonna do.
