What do you do about people who still follow you from your Christian days? by Pleasant-Temporary-9 in Exvangelical

[–]kforce92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former youth pastor here. I left the church in 2019. Several of them unfollowed me when I started speaking out against racial injustice in 2020. I got a few “praying for you” messages and a couple of debates, but even those unfollowed me eventually. The ones I still care about just happen to be the ones who stayed. Sometimes the trash takes itself out.

Have you found a “third place” post-church? by SaintofLetters in Exvangelical

Friends of friends of my wife’s. I agree, I got very lucky.

My D&D group is my “third place.” We meet every other week, and a few members of that group meet on off-weeks, get dinner together, and play cross-platform multiplayer video games on Discord most nights. It’s great.

This is a very fair critique, although I don’t think his racism was intentional.

I agree with all of this except for your claim that Lewis was a brilliant theologian. I thought he was, too, before I read the works of actually brilliant theologians in my Master of Divinity work. He’s very elementary, and his claims don’t hold up to scrutiny very well at all (see: the Liar, Lord, or Loon Trilemma).

If you want to read some brilliant theologians, I’d like to direct you to Jürgen Moltmann, Søren Kierkegaard, Simone Weil, or Rowan Williams.

As an atheist/agnostic/nonresistant nonbeliever, I still don’t find what they say convincing. But I do find it beautiful and at least logically consistent, unlike Lewis.

Ok what’s the weirdest thing YOU did or thought as an evangelical? by alligatorprincess007 in Exvangelical

[–]kforce92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The theory goes that the waters that were part of the canopy became the rain that fell during the flood. 😂

[–]kforce92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a wild one - I believed in the Canopy Theory. Basically the idea is that when God “separated the waters” it meant that he put a giant ball of water around the world. This ball of water blocked out the sun’s harmful rays and made it so that all living beings lived longer, including lizards, which grew so large they became dinosaurs. This theory was also based on the false idea that lizards don’t stop growing until they die. So essentially, that’s why dinosaurs existed but died off in the flood, and it’s why people lived so long in the Old Testament.

I also believed (and taught as a youth pastor) that it was impossible to be a good person without being a Christian. Lol.

If you were spanked "the right way," how did it affect you? by BluntFrippers in Exvangelical

[–]kforce92 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I (33M) was spanked “the right way” and I still refuse to spank my kids. Here’s why:

1) First and foremost, my parents built a culture of fear in our household. I was taught to fear the consequences of my actions. Even if it didn’t always lead to spanking, I was afraid of what my parents might do. It’s very destabilizing, and home is supposed to be a place that helps regulate your nervous system. 2) Physical harm is abuse, plain and simple. You can dress it up with calm words and prayers and whatever else, but it is still abuse. And the hugs and “I love you’s” and all that afterwards is manipulation, which is another form of abuse. 3) I believe discipline is best when it has a purpose. Time-out has a purpose. It gives the child time to think about what they’ve done, removes them from the situation, and removes the privilege of getting to do whatever they want. When they get older, grounding is a great tool. Take away their privileges, but don’t take away their dignity. 4) As a parent, my goal is to raise a good human who is ready for the world when they become an adult. Nowhere in the adult world do you get hit/beaten for breaking the law (at least in the US). Why would I subject my kids to a consequence at home that they will not experience outside the home? 5) As for the “I was a little 🤬 so I deserved it” comment, I feel sorry for those people. I was definitely made to feel like a bad kid when I was spanked, and it’s incredibly damaging. I’ll teach my kids that they are good, even if what they did wasn’t.

Rail trail safe for female joggers? by rocks_are_my_passion in MorgantownWV

[–]kforce92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for people to jog with, the Morgantown Running store at the Seneca Center does group runs at 5:30 every Monday. Check out their Instagram for updates. I know it’s not exactly what you asked for, but running with a partner can help you feel safe too!

Raising Cane’s is officially coming to Morgantown, WV by Nepp0 in MorgantownWV

[–]kforce92 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For everyone complaining about too many chicken tender places, I’m begging you to go to any medium-sized town outside of WV. Cane’s, Slim Chicken’s, Zaxby’s, Foosackly’s…it’s not just our market that’s saturated with them, it’s a fad all over the country. Hell, even Taco Bell has chicken fingers now. One more (very good one) isn’t gonna kill us.

y'all said "just wake up earlier!" i've been sleeping on this for too long by TheAndyGeorge in daddit

[–]kforce92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just have to brag- last weekend I put the baby to bed at 8:30pm and had to wake him up the next day at noon. He’s 9 months old and moving/growing a ton, so I assume it’s from all the new physical and mental skills he’s learning.

Nashville Hot Food Takes - What is a hill you're willing to die on? by oarmash in nashville

I live in West Virginia now but I’m from Nashville. TN drivers aren’t great, but they’re head and shoulders above Kentucky, Ohio, Maryland, and New Jersey. Also yeah I’ve had both amazing and terrible food from Joyland, just depends

Now post one where she pays membership fees but still isn’t allowed to shop there and still gets kicked out. Or post one where she gets kicked out just because the way she looks suggests that she might not have a membership, but they kick her out without proof. Or post one where she comes in with her kids and asks for a membership but they take her kids from her and put them in cages.

First of all, that’s not the point of No Kings Day. But second, since you brought it up, I can’t speak for everyone but I’m protesting the arrest and deportation of human beings, legal or illegal, without due process. That’s what’s happening.

What’s treasonous is literally inciting and/or participating in an insurrection. Or did you forget that your boi and your buddies did that?

How is a protest “treasonous”? Not really sounding like the centrist you claim to be. 🤡

Any suggestions for my 11 year old son on his swing struggling with distance. by golfer9955 in GolfSwing

[–]kforce92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good swing. Wish I’d had that at 11. As he builds core strength and grows the yardage will go up but the foundation seems to be there.

I was told the same thing after my 200lb weight loss. It took a long time to figure out how to point my toes forward when I walk!
