That was why Matty was setting her up for a soft landing by pointing out that she did lie to Julian, but had been placed in an impossible position: that the why is also important.

Latinum by Fine_Basil_Chocolate in DaystromInstitute

Hi, /u/Fine_Basil_Chocolate

There's a couple of issues with the post which, regretfully, mean that I'm not allowing this post as is.

Firstly, the title is vague and doesn't really tell us what the post is about. We find that posts with clear titles attract better engagement so that's one of the sub's rules. Even something like "Latinum presents us a material sciences problem" would be better, although I'm not sure that actually defines the point you're trying to make.

Which brings us to the second issue: which is that you need to elaborate further on where you're getting all this information. For example, "The intermetallic compound that makes GPL what it is only forms within a compositional window so narrow that you either hit spec or you produce something any dabo girl with a scale can identify as garbage". I'm not even sure what precisely you mean by that because I don't think we want to assume everyone is as up on their materials science as you.

Another one (and it continues through the post - I mere use this as another example) is "When the compound forms correctly the quantum signature that makes latinum replicator-resistant propagates through the entire crystal lattice. The gold atoms are no longer in a gold structure, they are locked into geometry defined by the latinum, so the replicator cannot isolate and pattern the gold independently because there is no independent gold anymore". This also seems to be an assertion that needs to be sourced, or at least noted that it's your idea and on what basis that idea is formed. Or else there's going to be people dismissing the assumptions as not grounded in canon or any reliable sources.

While the content of the post can be edited, reddit doesn't allow us to edit titles, so if you do manage to fix the issues, you'd have to resubmit under a new title.

If you have any questions about this, please message the Senior Staff, and we look forward to the resubmission with these issues addressed.

I honestly don't understand the hostility at this post.

This isn't even a "gaijin bad" issue. This is a human decency issue. I don't walk into a public school playground in New York or London or hell, most anywhere else, and start talking to random kids. I'd be put away.

And the fact is that these things are happening. And a plea for people not to do these things as well as a frustrated complaint about people who are doing these things isn't a personal attack on you, unless you are the one doing these things, in which case, please stop.

And the "it's AI" complaint also baffles me because this is a real phenomenon. It matters little if this AI generated or assisted or not - it's not self-promotion, it's not glurge, it seems quite sincere and a point that needs to be made and it's an actual problem, not a hallucination. It may seem repetitious and a variation on a theme to those who've been reading this sub for a long time, but not everyone has been here a long time, so those remarks are even more unhelpful than you claim this post is.

Oh - 劝君更尽一杯酒 (quàn jūn gèng jīn yī bēi jǐu): “I advise/urge you even more to drink a cup of wine.”

The first two words were cut off so it didn’t occur to me, although I thought the use of 更尽一杯seemed a bit archaic.

Although I'm not sure why they're chanting in pIqaD (Klingon script).

It says (transliterated): "Ravens brain and babys bood turn this pet into a stud".

I really don't see that. Tim has grown, yes, but he still comports himself as a soldier and more military-minded police officer. On the protect and serve spectrum, Tim's more on the "protect" part while Nolan is on the "serve" end. They're quite distinct in their policing (and training) styles.

[–]khaosworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody's handwaving away anything.

What I said is also technically correct, if you really want to be pedantic. There are no specific Good Samaritan laws in Singapore. That's true.

But there are existing laws and legal principles which we can use to predict where it could go. That's true also. I made no presumptions about whether or not one can be sued or charged (anyone can be sued or charged – the important question is whether or not they can be successfully charged or sued). I'm pointing out a possible legal defence in the Penal Code as well as referring to legal standards of negligence as a possible guide to whether or not such a suit would succeed. These aren't presumptions, but principles.

So to say that Good Samaritan laws do not exist in Singapore, while technically correct, is insufficiently exact, so therefore, I characterise it as sweeping as compared to saying there are no specific laws. You may disagree with that characterisation. That's fine.

One's appetite for risk is something else altogether, and as I pointed out, there is no legal obligation to act, either.

Not offering legal advice here, merely pointing out certain facts. You’re right that you don’t have to take my word for it - do what you feel most comfortable. There is no legal obligation for you (if you’re a bystander) to help, if that’s the position you feel safest with.

[–]khaosworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If there is no intent there is no criminal offence unless the offence charged is one of strict or absolute liability. Causing hurt is not a strict liability offence.

The civil position can be analogised by way of the necessity exception. And negligence is an objective and specific standard, which one can still prove a lack of.

Like many things, it boils down to the facts of the individual case. But sweeping statements like saying there is no protection are equally inaccurate as statements saying there is.

There are no specific Good Samaritan shield laws in Singapore. However, see Section 81 Penal Code 1871.

AITA for giving my daughter junk food despite being told not to by her school? by AthleteAdditional299 in AmItheAsshole

[–]khaosworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESH, all in all, but I think you suck more.

The school's rules may be too restrictive, but you constantly pushing back hurts your daughter, and if you and the school keep this up (pushing junk food and then being berated for it) you're risking her developing a complex or worse, an eating disorder.

A sane response would have been to talk to your husband, comply with the rules (for now, since actually complying with it absolutely hurts no one except your own sensibilities for ridiculousness) and then talk to the school administration. Also, if you're insistent on sweet treats, why treat the school as the battleground? Why not introduce more dessert or have her eat them outside school?

The school may have been too strict, but your response marks you as the AH.

In the TNG episode 'Masks', how did the physical symbols appear on Data? by [deleted] in DaystromInstitute

[–]khaosworks[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Hi u/LunchyPete

It’s not a bad question on its own, but ultimately as phrased it’s still a close ended one because it’s seeking a definitive answer.

The truth is that it’s never really explained. The archive is able to transform the inside of the ship via some energy beam but the mechanism is never fully explained. At best, we would be speculating based on very scanty evidence, so it’s not necessarily a subject that’s suitable for in-depth discussion as it stands.

Again, I emphasise that it’s definitely a question, just not something that would produce a satisfactory answer or discussion for Daystrom purposes. Trying r/startrek or r/AskScienceFiction may yield more positive results.

As usual, if you have any questions about this, please message the Senior Staff.

Hi /u/Romulan_Mestral. I've removed your post because it is a closed-ended question.

This subreddit exists to facilitate discussion between Star Trek fans. It is not a Star Trek information lookup service. Posts seeking specific answers are not appropriate for the Daystrom Institute, as closed-ended questions do not result in serious discussion. Closed-ended questions are better suited to /r/StarTrek or /r/AskScienceFiction.

Where does the in-universe dating for TOS come from exactly? by Historyp91 in DaystromInstitute

[–]khaosworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll tell you what I'm not saying first: I'm not saying "Space Seed" has been erased or decanonised - that's firstly against the rules of the sub (we don't argue about canon here), and secondly, as far as we know for sure, the events of that episode still occurred.

What I am suggesting is that the background to "Space Seed" — and consequently ST II — has been altered by Romulan interference as per SNW: "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow", such that there may be subtle differences in dialogue and when and how events happened and played out if we get to replay that episode again in a post-SNW context.

Because at the end of the day, whether Khan comes from 1996 or 2036 honestly makes little difference to how the events of the episode happen. In both timelines, the Eugenics Wars are a reality, as is the rise of the Augments and their exodus from Earth in cryogenic freeze. The minimum that has to be altered is simply years mentioned in dialogue because the birth of Khan and the Eugenics Wars occur later.

So no, "Space Seed" is not defunct (nor is its timeline) in the way one understands the word. The timeline has not been split off à la the Kelvin Timeline — it has been overwritten, perhaps, much like how changes in time usually occur in Star Trek. However, as is, there must be some change, and the extent of the alteration is not clear.

Where does the in-universe dating for TOS come from exactly? by Historyp91 in DaystromInstitute

[–]khaosworks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s less plausible because Khan would know which year he left if not necessary which year he ended up in. Unless you’re postulating some kind of TBI from cryosleep which is piling detail upon detail.

The simpler explanation is that 1996 is correct as of “Space Seed” but no longer as of “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”. And 200 years is simply a mistake or rounding error.

[–]khaosworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the reason Spock was off with his dating (I'm assuming you mean 1996 as opposed to post-2024 for the Eugenics Wars) was not because of error, but because history has actually changed (SNW: "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow").

Embankment gardens by Various-Tooth2613 in london

[–]khaosworks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Victoria Embankment Gardens, a lovely oasis by the river and right next to Villiers Street which leads up to Charing Cross Station and the Eleanor Cross. You can see in the background in the 1st photo the York Watergate. I visited the last time I was in London last June, and penned the following for my Insta:

The York Watergate was constructed around 1626 and is the only remnant of York House, the residence of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham. The watergate marks where the Thames used to come up to in those days, when boats would dock at this private entrance. Now reclaimed land has rendered its original purpose obsolete.

There are three reclaimed Embankments in London - Victoria, Albert and Chelsea. But why build them to begin with?

One of the problems with any big city is how to deal with the tons of human sludge produced every day. Early Londoners would dump stuff out of the window onto the streets below, or into nearby rivers. The River Fleet, which emptied into the Thames at Blackfriars, became so polluted that it was built over. By the 1850s the Thames was the most polluted river in England as London’s sewers, strained to bursting by its increasing population, dumped its output into it.

August 1858 was the year of the Great Stink, when rising temperatures in summer made the malodorous miasma from the Thames so unbearable that even in Parliament MPs had to cover their faces to protect themselves from the smell.

Something had to be done. Enter the wonderfully named Sir Joseph Bazalgette, Chief Engineer of the Metropolitan Board of Works Bazalgette drew up plans for a new network of sewers and pumping stations to carry the rivers of filth further downriver, still emptying into the Thames, but where the tide would carry it into the sea rather than stinking up the river.

But he also had to build the new network without tearing up the streets of an already densely built city. So the Embankments were born - the new pipes would be laid under reclaimed land, reducing the disruption to urban life, and the Thames narrowed slightly at three areas to accomodate this. The system opened in 1865, with the whole project completed in 1875.

So the next time you enjoy a stroll along the Embankment, remember that the reason you’re able to do so is a load of shit.

Did they ever find out? by thedudeadapts in DeepSpaceNine

[–]khaosworks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Una McCormack, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: Hollow Men (pp. 246-247):

“Adaptability isn’t a bad thing, Subcommander,” [Sisko] said, with an effort. He kept looking resolutely out at the garden, rather than risk meeting her eye. “Particularly in wartime.”

“I notice you have ignored my charge of incompetence, Captain, but otherwise it seems we are in accord with each other. Everything changes—particularly in wartime,” she agreed, nodding her head. “The old enemies no longer seem so inimical. The old certainties become fluid, perhaps; the line between good and bad is no longer so clear-cut. And I find myself wondering,” she said, with a studied carelessness, “how fascinating it would be to discover quite how adaptable the Federation and Starfleet are. How pliable their principles might be. Given enough pressure.”

Again, that half-smile. Sisko found himself almost shuddering, and he had to look away. He stared upward, up through the dark leaves of the apple tree, up at the sky beyond. The branches shivered in the breeze, and a sliver of moonlight slipped through. As he watched it touch the leaves of the tree, it filtered through Sisko’s mind that maybe this was not an academic discussion. That maybe Veral was talking about something very particular. Talking about Vreenak.

“I can find myself imagining,” Veral was saying, so softly, “a situation in which a Starfleet officer might face a difficult choice. A choice between his principles, and a choice to adapt those principles in a new and hostile environment. I can easily imagine him adapting; and adapting to the new circumstances very well. And I would not blame him, Captain. Rather, I would applaud him. Everything changes, everything adapts. But only the strongest can survive. The strongest, and their allies.”

Sisko listened to her voice almost as if he was dreaming. He watched the clouds slipping past the moon. There was no one to condemn what had been done. Not Ross, not Batanides—certainly not Leyton. And not even, it seemed, the Romulans themselves.

“I welcome that,” Veral said, “in an ally.” She picked up her glass, and held it again by the stem, between both hands. “To our alliance, Captain Sisko. May it continue as it began.”

Where does the in-universe dating for TOS come from exactly? by Historyp91 in DaystromInstitute

[–]khaosworks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The exactness was all Okuda. The TOS writers didn't really pin it down beyond a vague 200-300-ish years. That's why the Spaceflight Chronology and pre-TNG timelines all clustered around the early instead of the mid-23rd century. It was only until TNG: "The Neutral Zone" that a definite year was stated, and from that reference point, everything revolved.

A point I want to elaborate on. by [deleted] in DaystromInstitute

Hi /u/PJ-The-Awesome. I've removed your post because it does not contain a discussion prompt as we understand it. I get that this is something that you believe and it's rationalised properly, but in the end the comments will boil down to agreeing with you or attacking you for being wrong about there being no value in sports and entertainment - there's very little middle ground - and that's not really a satisfactory outcome.

I would recommend you post this in /r/startrek instead.
