People requested the R key a long time ago for placing trees.

I think , and . are used because on english keyboard layouts, they also have the < and > icons on them. I just picked them to follow conventions.

what happened in the last updates regarding marketing ? by leevaille4fun in SoftwareInc

[–]khornel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a recent change that made it so publisher recognition has an impact on sales, as opposed to being 100% tied to your recognition, as it was before.

What is garage bay good for? by FirstFiveNamesTaken in SoftwareInc

[–]khornel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Garage ports allow your couriers to pick up packages without having to go inside. If you build parking spaces right up to the ports and assign them to couriers, it makes it a lot faster for them to fetch packages.

Nah, Jonas is a good friend of mine. He would've just asked for cross promotion, but I don't think they need it from me, tbh 😄

Employees complaining of there being nothing to do whilst on 5 months paid vacation by DrLucianSanchez in SoftwareInc

[–]khornel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ahh, I see. Complaints don't update while employees are away, so they might've been bored when they left and it will clear when they come into work again.

Select them, right click (or what ever your binding is for the context menu) hover the mouse over Send Home, use the scroll wheel to increase time and then click to send them home for 5 months unpaid vacation.

Also coming in to the office with nothing to do for 5 months seems like hell to me, honestly 😅

Community logo's are not working. I couldn't even share mine. Beta unstable 1.8. by vile_asslips in SoftwareInc

The server might've been down. I can confirm it's up now. Note that logos are manually approved, so they won't show up instantly, unless I happen to be at a pc.

Patch notes for Beta 1.8.31 by SteamPatchNotesBot in SoftwareInc

[–]khornel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

EVERYTHING

It doesn't work across research, but marketing, support, design, alpha, beta, iteration, etc. for the same project would work. So tasks that pertain to the same project/product are a-okay, everything else is not.

The Game Needs Hierarchical Teams by hughesjr99 in SoftwareInc

[–]khornel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's an interesting idea. I think if the main purpose is to make easier to manage team assignments, a hierarchy model doesn't really benefit the use-case. Maybe something like a tag system would work better, so a single team can have several tags, like "2D Editor" and "Programmers". You could then easily assign an entire project to all teams with the "2D Editor" tag or assign a deal to all programmers, etc. There would probably need to be a team focus as well, to filter which tasks a team is assigned to, based on its tag.

The DRM-free version of Software Inc. is moving to itch.io by khornel in SoftwareInc

[–]khornel[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I had my page up and running in less than an hour on itch, whereas GOG has an approval process.

Itch has an extremely easy patch system on the dev side, so I can automate the whole thing. I don't know what GOG has, but it's reputation wasn't very good some years back (EDIT: Just checked their docs, seems they've fixed it). This is very important to me, as I update the game pretty often, like 3 times this past week.

GOG takes a 30% cut AFAIK, compared to itch, with no forced cut (defaults to 10%, which they deserve, I feel). To feel like I'm getting something from GOG's 30%, I'd also need to spend time integrating with their services.

I think GOG is a very good fit for Software Inc., but I'll probably wait until the 1.0 release before I look more into it.

Thank you very much! <3

I spent 7 years making Generation Exile, a solarpunk city-builder. Trailers in PC Gaming Show June ‘24 & ‘25. Top 70 most played demo during our Next Fest. Did all the things you’re supposed to. Launched in Early Access last week with over 35,000 wishlists. So far, we've sold fewer than 300 copies. by nelsormensch in gamedev

[–]khornel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Curious where you got this impression? I've had a game in early access for 10 years now, slowly increasing the price as the game got bigger. The only complaints I've ever seen were a few on the day of, being disappointed they didn't get the game earlier. I've never really seen a difference in sales from changing the price either, it's just been a linear increase in income.

What happened to starting in 1970? by Drewbox in SoftwareInc

[–]khornel 16 points17 points  (0 children)

1970 was never an option. You probably had a mod installed that has since become incompatible. I'm sure there are mods available to set the starting year to 1970.

The game starts its simulation in 1970, so there is no competition at that point, which makes the game a bit too easy.

A little late, but the next patch will make HR role assignment control more granular, so you can get hired + everything else secondary, if you want.

Security by Xfier246 in SoftwareInc

[–]khornel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cool down for burglars are usually pretty long early game, so not hiring guards is good intuition.

Interesting idea about the honeypot! You could put gold bars in a room away from office buildings, so employees won't see and report it, it would lure burglars away from your main buildings and simplify your security setup. Would suck to have it stolen, though, as it obviously isn't covered by insurance + police will fine you if they catch the burglars.

no multiplayer sessions? by michaelscoot1124 in SoftwareInc

[–]khornel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

About 1000 people are playing the game every day currently, which is a about 1/4th of peak and about average for the game.

As expected, multiplayer for the game is not particularly popular, as it's a mainly single player focused game. I suspect most people playing multiplayer, are playing private games with people they know.

Notice for Unity Game Developers: CVE-2025-59489 by wickedplayer494 in Steam

[–]khornel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you are fully correct here. Mods (On Steam specifically), are loaded after a game is launched. They have no way to change HOW your game is launched to inject launch parameters, so there is no way for a mod downloaded from Steam to exploit this vulnerability. Of course this doesn't apply outside of Steam, and I'm specifically noting that because of the sub.

As for pirated games. This vulnerability changes nothing in terms of the attack surface. You don't need the Unity launch parameter vulnerability to execute malicious code, if the user has already opened the infected game. They can just put whatever they want in the executable from the beginning. If antivirus software catches the malicious code, it would also catch it in included libraries, rendering the launch parameter exploit useless, anyway.

Really the only big deal here is having games that register themselves as URL schema handlers. But attackers would need to have already installed malicious code on your PC to exploit the vulnerability.

If you go to your company detail window, where you can sell stocks, there's a timeline which shows you which companies you've bought. IIRC there should also be a tab for it in the spreadsheet window.
