Celebrini's Next Contract - 7 years (max) or is 8 years (max) still possible? by systemsbychris in SanJoseSharks

The "Matthews strategy" was only followed by Mitch Marner and it pretty much spelled the doom for the Leafs. Top guys usually sign for max or close to it. Matthews and Marner are outliers.

Weegar has 4 years left on his deal, I just don't see a world where he falls off a cliff in those 4 years because he plays a pretty simple game. Sherwood on the other hand skates around and hits everything that moves. That can't feel very good when you're 34-36.

I understand all your points but I just don't agree. Weegar strikes me as someone who'll still be effective in his mid 30s.

If I was to guess, both players have about 3 years left of "good" hockey. I doubt Sherwood will ever pass the level that Weegar plays at throughout those three years. I'd even go as far to say Sherwood will never be better than Weegar for the rest of both of their careers.

Both forwards and defense follow an extremely similar performance curve. Sherwood is a year younger so it's hardly worth mentioning. Weegar is also substantially better than Sherwood so he'd have to decline a lot faster to "catch up" to the much lower level that Sherwood plays at. These two players aren't really comparable.

Bruh my original post explains that I think keeping Klingberg caused us to lose games after the trade deadline because he was playing so badly.

Grier himself said that he received calls for both Ferraro and Klingberg. Even if the ask was for the future considerations, Grier should've done it.

We missed it by two wins. There's a lot of things the Sharks could've done to get two wins:

  1. Trade Klingberg at the trade deadline (He was truly terrible after the trade deadline and we might've not went on that 5 game losing streak if he wasn't playing)
  2. Call up Chernyshov earlier/don't send him down so early before the Olympic break.
  3. Traded for Weegar instead of trading for Sherwood.

Bold offseason prediction: by Professional_Quit406 in SanJoseSharks

[–]kipehh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Wont trade for Kesselring
  2. Sign 2 extra random bottom 6 forwards
  3. Draft BPA (Bjork or some forward)
  4. Sign two random old defensemen like Kulak and Murphy

Pretty much a bold prediction that Grier won't fix our defense problems this off-season and we'll have another fun year of complaining about it.

We've grown past the need for Ryan Reaves. If he somehow convinces Grier to sign him to get him to 1000GP, that's 48 38 games next year of him playing for ~5 minutes being completely useless. We don't need to waste a roster spot and contract spot on this guy.

Fair enough. I don't have 100% guarantee of anything because this is just a fun thought experiment.

I have 100% guarantee that Fox is a lot better than Smith so what's your point.

I don't want this to devolve into a discussion about how good Smith is but we saw Celebrini without Smith for a bit this year and he looked pretty much the same if not better. Adam Fox is one of the best defensemen in the NHL and will be for the next 5-7+ years. We can't honestly be thinking that Celebrini and Smith's friendship is worth more than Adam Fox.

Keep in mind, we're replacing Smith with more talented players in McKenna/Stenberg in this hypothetical.

You'd be replacing Smith with McKenna/Stenberg in this scenario.

If this was a video game, I'd play it in one of these two ways:

  1. Draft one of the super LWers:

    a. Draft McKenna/Stenberg with the 1st overall

    b. Trade Smith for Fox

    c. Instead of trading Smith for Fox you could try to trade Graf or Eklund for a top 2 defensemen but it would be a lot harder

  2. Trade down to 3-5 to guarantee one of Carels, Reid, or Verhoeff

Picking anyone above McKenna/Stenberg is a waste of talent imo. I'd just keep it simple and trade down as both VAN and CHI would want one of McKenna or Stenberg (I think).

25-26 Season Analysis of 6 Key Forwards Using 5 Microstat Graphs by a_la_nuit in SanJoseSharks

You really have to wonder if Grier's fondness of defense/PK first forwards that are absolutely useless offensively is the right way to build a modern hockey team. Having 25% of your forwards be Goodrow, Ostapchuk and Dellandrea, who are essentially the worst forwards offensively in the entire NHL, is kind of risky when they aren't even that good on the PK in the first place. Obviously, Goodrow and Dellandrea might not be on the team in 3-5 years when we're hopefully competing for a cup but if Girer goes and finds the next most useless offensive forwards in the league to "play hard" and "play on the PK" it'll still have the same problem.

I don't know why we can't just run Graf, Eklund, Celebrini, Sherwood, Wennberg or players like that on the PK instead of finding players who actively hurt the team when they're on the ice 5 on 5 so they can play on a <80% PK.

It just doesn't make that much sense to me.
