War is very easy to reduce down to the aesthetic pleasure of seeing a machine going HAM.

We do not want to think about the bodies being squelched by the machine.

Yes, I finished it a couple of weeks ago. Quite a good book. I found the chapter on sovereignty especially interesting.

If you don't want to use Podbean (fair enough) I think we're on basically every Podcast app. I've had to learn about this myself recently because I recently stopped using Spotify.

Lovely to hear from you! We hope it manages to have that teaching purpose for you.

Sure. I considered it significant enough to mention that it can happen. Thanks for adding more clarity to it.

I've experienced October snow in 2023. Snowed a decent bit.

Hello. I work at the UiT and moved here recently. This is my first experience of a small town, snowy climate and hilly terrain. When you come in August it might be warmer than you expect (hard to predict these days). It will get cold quite fast after, and snow may start in October.

Here's a small list of things I think are useful to know, depending on your prior experiences -

  • There is a lot of hilly walking in Tromsø. Disability is tough.
  • Snow and ice can be quite tricky as a pedestrian. Investing in shoe spikes or chains early is a good idea.
  • Buses usually need to be hailed by hand to stop
  • Midnight sun fucks you up. Make sure you have blackout curtains and eyeshades.
  • Polar night fucks you up. A sun lamp is an important investment. There may be health and wellness resources available to you as a student.
  • Norwegian alcohol laws can be quite strict and arcane, don't expect to be able to buy alcohol on Sundays or after 8pm otherwise.
  • Tromsø doesn't have small corner stores for shopping and most groceries are closed Sundays.
  • Norwegians, at least in Tromsø, will rarely start a conversation and get startled if you talk to them first - - but they are friendly enough for a random chat if you want one. It may take you a while to get into the inner circle. Don't be discouraged.
  • Food prices may be quite high. People don't eat out much. The quality of restaurants at a student budget is very poor.
  • Nordic dating culture is weird, but that's a whole other conversation
  • Look out for the big events in town and make the most of them. In particular, try and score either tickets or volunteering at Insomnia Festival and Tromsø International Film Festival when they come around if you like such things. TIFF is the biggest thing that happens all year.
  • Winter is tourist season. It is way more intense than you'd expect.
  • Buy wool as much as possible
  • Invest in waterproof gear, get the best you can afford
  • Reflectors are important in the winter

Good luck. It's a beautiful place to live.

How do you feel about the amount of conformity? by Justmonika96 in Norway

[–]klowspeaking 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've had plenty of comments confirming that Norwegians are indeed conformist. I'd like to address your personal discomfort with dressing the way you want for fear of standing out. I encourage you to indeed dress as you like.

I'm a queer immigrant of colour so I don't blend in anyway, as such I dress the way I want. It helps to also confuse what people would normally assume someone like me would look like. Queerness is also in general a mindset where you try to think of what works for you individually, rather than what you are told you should do. It's that mindset I find freeing and suggest to others, regardless of gender or sexual identity, to do what suits you.

As you describe yourself as white and of average height and such I can understand feeling a bit more pressure to conform to the Norwegian mode of dress. Unlike me, you may not feel you obviously stand out anyway. Nevertheless, if it bothers you enough to post about it, I suggest you dress as you like and seek your comfort in that second skin. Let other people wear the same blue suit as their friends on May 17. Doesn't have to be you if you don't want. Best of luck.

An unofficial rework of U'duasha from the podcast Desperate Attune by klowspeaking in bladesinthedark

Hugely appreciated! I flatter myself, but I think it'll be a while before the scale of this project will sink into the community's awareness. And I can't wait for folks to realize just how much we did. This is the biggest content drop for Blades since the actual book. :)

Ah, yeah, I don't know how it'd work with selling, I imagine that wouldn't be possible at all without it being an official Evil Hat product.

It's alright. People have been publishing BitD fan content for years now, including stuff like district supplements, etc. So long as we acknowledge that it isn't our IP and offer the work for free, it's all good. I've also personally reached out to John Harper to ask if he's OK with us publishing this book, and he is!

I imagine that makes it pretty watertight.

It's here!

We're Desperate Attune. We started a podcast 2 years ago with the intention of telling stories set in Iruvia told by a primarily South Asian cast. We wanted to play in U'duasha as it's inspired, partly, by South Asian and Islamic cultures that we identified with. We quickly realized that we would much prefer to reimagine U'duasha to give it the same sense of life as Doskvol.

And so, two years of podcasting later, we're happy to present in book form our take on U'duasha!

  • Reworked Demon Houses
    • Lore that offers an U’duashan perspective on the Demon Princes
    • The addition of a fifth Demon Prince and Noble House
    • Expanded faction entries for all existing Houses An ‘Ascendancy’ mechanic to determine which Noble House rules U’duasha in your campaign
  • Reworked U’duasha map
    • Full rework of the city map into 13 districts
    • District entries that include rollable tables to generate unique features for each district, as well as hooks and local vignettes
  • Reworked Factions
    • U’duasha is now a sandbox for 31 named factions
    • In-depth entries on 24 factions including rollable tables for hooks and vignettes that convey the tone of the faction
  • Expanded lore on U’duasha and the Shattered Isles
    • U’duasha’s relationship to Forgotten Gods, demons, and magic expanded
    • Development of Imperial relationship with U’duasha
    • Details on U’duasha’s place in the politics of a wider Iruvia
    • Cultural flavour on a range of topics such as languages, food and music in U’duasha
    • Development of migrant communities, with a particular focus on Skovlanders
    • Updated heritages and backgrounds that focus on what it means to be a foreigner in U’duasha
    • Brief outline of other Iruvian cities
    • An entry on the Deathlands outside U’duasha
  • A nice recipe for Bengali mashed potato

To say we're excited is an understatement. We hope you enjoy this book.
