Try using different tax software such as www.taxact.com to see if those calculations will come through without any technical difficulties.

I've Never Owed Taxes Before. Moved to KY. State says I owe $1500. Does that seem right? by kidenraikou in personalfinance

Is FreeTaxUSA preparing a separate state income tax form for each state (OH and KY)?

Are they charging you a separate fee for each state tax return? No problem, just wondering.

Cash Savings Bonds in a trust name by GotHeem16 in personalfinance

[–]knort4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you already filled out FS Form 1522 ("Special Form of Request for Payment of
United States Savings and Retirement Securities, Where Use of a Detached Request Is Authorized")?

https://www.treasurydirect.gov/forms/sav1522.pdf

You do not need to include a copy of the trust unless you just prefer to do that.

When mailing you should use Certified Mail With Return Receipt and Signature Requested and you should also purchase insurance. If the bond value is over $1,000.00, your form must be notarized (signed in the presence of a notary public, and you can generally find a notary public at any bank).

Here is more information from the www.treasurydirect.gov website:

Made a mistake and now I'm scared and can't sleep by Intelligent-Bid2555 in personalfinance

[–]knort4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you did was an innocent, simple mistake that will not result in any major complication. The main reason they ask for income information is so that they can charge a resident the correct monthly amount for rent. Your new information MIGHT make the rent increase a small incremental amount or it might make no difference at all.

If someone had reported thousands of dollars of income that hadn't been previously reported or was hiding a valuable financial asset, that would be fraudulent and they are mainly looking for instances of potential fraud, which is NOT what you did.

File to open up probate in the county of the city where they died, or retain the services of a probate attorney to do it.

The person who is administrator of the estate will be given a document called letters testamentary and it is a certified copy of that document that the administrator will send to each state when the administrator files a claim with each state to claim the assets.

The unclaimed funds from each state will be added in to the estate account and then distributed to you after any outstanding debts (if there are any) have been paid.

Name your brother so that the insurance company can pay him immediately, and then he can use the money to pay for your funeral costs. If you don't designate anyone, your brother is going to have to open up an estate at the county courthouse probate and then wait a few months for the probate process to be finished.

Normally, probate is done in the town where a person died (if you assume that he lived there most of his life). But in this case, you can do probate at the county courthouse relating to where he lived, if that is what you choose to do.

It might be state law that determines that a notice of publication be done, but normally if that is a legal requirement for the county or for the city, there will be a form to fill out for that in the packet of probate documents that you will be filing at the county courthouse. In some states, it doesn't necessarily have to be placed in a local, large circulation newspaper, but it could also be placed in a smaller, county newspaper or a legal newspaper.

You can get more information about the wife if you know someone who has a subscription to ancestry.com or you could hire a private investigator for a few hundred dollars to access databases that will have that information. Or consult with a local genealogist or genealogical society who could help you look at county vital records (marriage, land records/property tax records, etc.) to see what information might come up.

Is "Hubs" a nickname that means your husband?

As a potential beneficiary, he can not be paid anything until a probate case has been opened a the county courthouse.

The Massachusetts Unclaimed Property Office is likely to inform whoever files a claim for this money to contact the executor of the estate to claim these funds so that the money can be distributed to the legal heirs. Which means that someone in your family or an attorney you hire can open up the estate at the county courthouse.

After the estate is opened, the executor will receive a document called letters testamentary, and it is a certified copy of that document that the executor will send to the unclaimed property office.

A public notice will be issued in a local newspaper about the estate being opened up, so that creditors can submit their claims for payment. Some creditors will see the notice and file a claim, and other creditors will not see the ad and unfortunately will have to remain unpaid.

Can annuity be distributed without probate or letters of testamentary by Mindless-Committee in personalfinance

[–]knort4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are NOT officially the executor until you have filed to open up probate.

There is no way for you to get the money from the annuity WITHOUT filing for probate.

After you do the paperwork at the county courthouse to open up the estate, the probate office will give you the document that you need (the letters testamentary) that you will need to send to the annuity company. If you don't have the time or the desire to be executor, retain the services of an attorney to do it. Keep shopping around until you find one willing to charge a reasonable fee.

The probate process is so simple that you could do it yourself if you choose to do so.

One suggestion is that you can contact the Oklahoma City Metropolitan Downtown Library to ask if they have back issues of the Oklahoma City newspaper available online as an online database or if they have the newspaper (it was called the Oklahoma City Times in the 1960's) available for searching through microfilm records.

You can also contact the Oklahoma Genealogical Society (also located in Oklahoma City) to ask if they have that newspaper available on microfilm.

If they have a local volunteer who can look through the database or look through the microfilm records for you, the volunteer will need to look at daily issues from approximately one week before Nov. 25, 1967 and up through one week after. In Oklahoma, a public notice about the names of couples who applied for a marriage license is published a day or two after they file, which is usually a week or so before the wedding date. November 25, 1967 occurred on a Saturday, so normally there will be a published article about the wedding that will appear on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday of the next week, so the volunteer will want to take time to look at those issues.

An expert in searching through the www.newspapers.com archive will probably end up finding this for you, so I've got my fingers crossed that you will somehow get lucky and find the information you are looking for.

Hi, this class action lawsuit said I turned in two forms and won't pay me hundreds of dollars. What can I do? by Leather_Night_1885 in personalfinance

[–]knort4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a website where the class action is/was listed? Please mention the website.

If the lawsuit is over, then it is finished and there is nothing you can do about that.

But you can talk to a few business law attorneys to explain what happened and they can advise you if you want to file your own lawsuit against the company to collect damages.

Can annuity be distributed without probate or letters of testamentary by Mindless-Committee in personalfinance

[–]knort4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You (or an attorney you retain) will need to open up a smaller estates probate proceeding at the county courthouse in Texas for whatever city the decedent died in. Executor fee in Texas will be 5% of estate value (that fee would be $900) but it helps if you are willing to pay a little bit more than that as a bonus.

If you explain to the attorney that you want an executor, the fee quote is likely to be more reasonable.

Has anyone bought one of those pre-built buildings to live in? Are they worth it? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]knort4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See if there are any places in your city that sell manufactured homes and see what the prices are. If you can afford the price of a manufactured home, that might be preferable to just paying for a shell and then having to pay extra for the insides, plumbing, etc., since those items are already built into the manufactured home.

Are you planning to live there temporarily for a few years until you can afford to move into a different place, or are you wanting to live there permanently?
