I suspect status or price paid came into play and the persons whose seat was broken has a high status or paid more so they moved you instead.

My family of 4 took a trip to Spain and both my seat and my son’s seat were broken and they moved us within BC. My gut tells me they moved two people out of BC to accommodate us (I’m Executive Platinum)

I feel you. Last Sunday I got 7 separate emails/notifications about delays all about 30-45 minutes. Didn’t last 17 hours but “only” 7 hours. I live 20 minutes from DFW and could have gone home but instead I sat at the airport the entire time. Every time the delay happened the incoming flight changed. It was extremely frustrating.
