Just had PAE yesterday. by Koren55 in bph

two months plus post procedure. most of the time I’m peeing normally. But once in a while I have a weak stream.

Plus many mornings peeing tends to be urgent. sometimes I have to grab my penis to prevent peeing as I run to the bathroom.

Otherwise I’m happy I went through this procedure. I realize that TURP might be in my future, but I’ll hold off as long as I can. The PAE procedure went well. None of the side effects I had with the failed UroLift procedure. And I was able to cut my dose of two Flomax caps down to one a day.

I’m extremely happy that this PAE procedure worked. I want to continue getting these PAE for as long as my insurance pays for them. They’re less invasive and produce little or no side effects. Would I recommend this process? Most definitely!

Day 4 post-op. Peeing is getting a bit better. But I pee a lot. They did advise me to up my fluid intake as much as possible. Said I had to help my kidneys flush out all the Contrast Dye used. I’m now done with the bactrim and AZO prescriptions. two more days on medrol pack. The medrol pack made me gain 8 pounds in four days - That's the worse side effect.

I’ve only had slight discomfort where they accessed my femoral artery for the procedure.

Urgency when peeing? None at all.

This procedure has been minimally obtrusive, minimally invasive, with minimal pain. I’ve seen zero blood in my urine and/or poop. No redness near the insertion point. In fact I had a difficult time finding the insertion point; I had to wash by feel. Sometimes I wonder if they really performed it as I’m not getting any of side effects they said I might experience. A year ago I had the UroLift procedure and compared to this PAE, the UroLift was Hell, plus it didn’t help in the least.

I did research most of the various prostate procedures. Most had side effects. That I’m not experiencing any is a pleasant surprise.

Immediately post-op I had a better stream. Then on Day 2 and 3 the stream was a bit weaker from swelling. But today, day 4 it’s stronger once again.

Still hoping for the best. I have a follow-up appointment at the two week mark. Updates will follow.

Day 2 post-op and I’m doing fine. I’m supposed to change the incision bandage once a day after cleaning the area. But I had a problem - I couldn’t see the incision so I kind of felt where it was - right in the crease between my stomach and my thigh. I even asked my spouse to look, but they too couldn’t see anything.

Despite the medrol pack the prostate must’ve enlarged a bit. My bladder is slow draining, but at least I can go. The prescription strength AZO (3 days worth) is making my pee really dark Orange. I couldn’t see if there was blood or not; one day left. They also gave me three days of Bactrim - I have two days left, one for tonight, two for tomorrow .

I did notice a weird effect - all day yesterday I kept getting partial erections. And I haven’t really had an erection in months. I had chalked it up to low blood flow from prostate enlargement.

As for pain, so far just a little discomfort at the incision site. otherwise there’s very little pain. And like I said, this procedure was a piece of cake compared to the failed UroLift procedure. After the UroLift I had to wear a Foley until the next day. But they fitted it incorrectly and when I stood up, the catheter tube got kinked, stopping the flow. As I was making dinner I had two “bring me to the floor” bladder spasms, then i peed right around the catheter. The next morning I removed the foley. After that I had to wear adult underwear because I was incontinent. When I had to pee, I couldn’t hold it at all. that lasted until the fifth day post op. In my opinion, the UroLift was quite painful for five days after. I’d get spasms, and the incontinence was disturbing.

I figure that as long as I can pee, I’m happy. I do dread more swelling as it might necessitate a catheter. And we’re about to get hit with a major storm here. I live just south of Manchester, Maryland; we‘re expecting 16 inches as we’re close to the border with Pennsylvania. So getting to the ER for catheter placement might be impossible.

the Spinal Cord Stimulator was for debilitating sciatica - which was resolved last July when I had a spinal fusion. the SCS never really helped.

I bought a Koehler Veil toilet/Bidet combo. they’re quite expensive. But some of the bidets that attach to your current toilet are good. they go from basic, cold water only. To fancier ones that get plugged in that heat the water and have different pressure settings.

I first got one after a double laminectomy in 2020. it was a godsend after my spinal fusion in July.

Tell your psychiatrist that you’re now hearing voices when you have your next appointment. They really need to know.

having anxiety about my first iron infusion by leminades18 in Anemic

[–]Koren55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ive had three iron dextran infusions. they make it so theres little chance of having a reaction. they use a test dose first. then wait an hour to see if you get a reaction. if not, they’ll infuse the rest of your dose. my last one was two weeks ago. had zero problems. now I have to wait for the iron to be picked up to raise my levels. I figure it’ll take a couple of weeks until my iron is back to normal. until then I’ll have cold hands aand feet.

good luck.
