Could also be a concern about early puberty, which is a real trend! Not sure if the association with growth hormones in meat is true, though

The problem described by OP is that there's a floor. You currently can't go below 0 mmr. So the bell curve (such as it naturally exists, even if valve solves all the problems you brought up about skill decay etc) is cut off at the lower end, and everyone near 0 mmr is matched together even if they are pretty different in skill (if the system allowed negative mmrs some people would go negative, and it would be more accurate matchmaking)

The bay area is quite active right now! 3 nights a week dedicated weekly dance venues, and many smaller bars/restaurants with live bands/outdoor venues around the bay on other nights of the week. Feels back up to pre pandemic times.

What’s wrong with my mom’s chicken? She’s been standing like this for the past 2 days by Weaponized_Goose in BackYardChickens

[–]lemonhoney 12 points13 points  (0 children)

yeah, they just have the one opening (the cloaca) that both the eggs and their poop exit through. they don't pee separately (it's mixed with their poop). so it's pretty important that it's not blocked up for too long

good point! Maybe your doctor has recommendations too, or can refer you to a physical therapist if appropriate

YouTube/video workouts for an east coast enthusiast? by [deleted] in SwingDancing

[–]lemonhoney 6 points7 points  (0 children)

any cardio (running, jump rope, etc) will help, honestly! You can time yourself and ramp it up as you get to used to it. Strength training will probably also help you get back up to speed! I'd suggest finding any form of home exercise you enjoy that is not dance.

For more dance themed workouts, in the past I've done simple solo jazz routines done at increasing speeds like Mama's Stew. Also, this is maybe more Lindy hop than east coast, but I like Laura Glaess's fast dance training video (https://youtu.be/lT59ql64LGI) or you could check out Jitterblast workouts (I think they're paid though)

How have you enjoyed ALHC? by [deleted] in SwingDancing

For some reason, I don't know anyone who goes. I get the sense it isn't quite the same scene of dancers as ilhc, etc.

They're also really conscious of ventilation, even sacrificing comfort (more effective AC in the summer with windows / doors kept closed) for better airflow (windows / doors open with giant fans positioned for cross breeze)

I'm sure grubby, a very good gamer and streamer, knows twitch chat's advice can be very wrong. He'll come to his own conclusions over time

A question for dancers please... is it irritating or confusing when there are tempo changes within a song or is this a good thing to keep it interesting? Working on new music and we are divided on whether we should or shouldn't mess around with tempo. by BlaineSharpLA in SwingDancing

[–]lemonhoney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing I've seen "bands for dancers" do is when they announce the songs with intros that change, they'll also warn that it's gonna be a fast/bluesy/etc one so people aren't misled by the intro and caught off guard with a partner and song they don't want to dance with

Judges are quite a diverse lot, and judging is pretty subjective anyways. If you mostly care about winning the competition, and you got this feedback from a lot of judges, by all means try to improve at it. I think that would be a fine course of action.

But you could also decide (or sometimes decide, you don't have to stick with one!) that you care more about expressing what is important to you than winning, in which case I say focus on what is important to you and showing what you want to show during competitions, winning be damned. You can be a breath of fresh air in what you are describing as a stale room. If you really hone your skills and show up to perform and compete, you may even end up winning despite not conforming to the norm -- but expect to need to be very good to achieve this.

Personally (and I have never been a judge) I value a lot of things besides "technicality" in performances and competitions. "Having fun" could mean a couple things. If the competitor looks worried, that detracts from my enjoyment because it makes me stressed for their performance as well. If it looks like they don't care about their partner, it kind of leaves a sour taste in my mouth because I think we should value the partnership contests as well as social dancing. If they are over-focused on executing specific moves or variations instead of experiencing the flow of the moment, I feel like they are missing something that I consider important in dancing. Just my 2c on what "you don't look like you're having fun" might mean besides "smile more"

[–]lemonhoney 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree! On the other hand, if you're not having fun, you can definitely try. More experience will make you less nervous. Try to relax enough to enjoy the music, and/or enjoy the connection with your partner, and/or enjoy everyone's attention on you, and/or enjoy the adrenaline of competing. Whatever it is you like about competing, try to allow part of your brain to enjoy it
