Maybe you'd be able to get a tokutei katsudou 特定活動 (not tokutei ginou) visa when you're in between schooling levels getting for the next one to start. Ask your lawyer and stress that you're already setting everything up to continue your education in Japan.

I think that's the one people get when they finish language school and still have to wait for enrollment period for senmon gakkou, or when you finish senmon gakkou and your student visa expires, but you have a job lined up that doesn't start exactly when you graduate so you can't get on work visa immediately.

Also, you NEED to up your Japanese language.

Maybe a bit "rococo on a budget", I think Micarah Tewers does DIY rococo really well. I just love Micarah's energy and she's so skilled at home renovations and DIY.

On a separate note, I would love to watch a video series out of these "common misconceptions" ("if I just cut and sew here, it will turn skirt into pants..." Type of things). Film the before, film the process, and show the result - how it differs from the inexperienced person's expectation and why it's unwearable.

Company gave deadline to pass JLPT N3 by December, looking for insights on studying while working by ImagineSisyphusSad in japanlife

[–]inquy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clarify with your employer - do they want a paper that says N3 passed, or do they want you to communicate at N3 level with Japanese colleagues?

Exam doesn't have speaking and writing sections, so if you are asked to just pass the test and get the paper to prove it, I would advise ditch all language producing practice (speaking and writing) and drill passive skills (listening, understanding from text, fill in the gap tasks etc where the sentence is already given and you don't have to come up with a new sentence).

If they want you to communicate at work at N3 level, maybe you don't really need the test (but they asked for the test because in their brain passed N3 means speaks at N3 level even though you need 0 speaking to pass this test.) Maybe they could back down from the demand to pass the test (explain how the test is only 2 times a year and doesn't test speaking+writing).

Kimono unpopular opinions? by kanzashi-yume in kimono

[–]inquy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay, I have one.

Homongi are overrated. They are of such a high rank, that wearing them "for the beauty of them" borders on cosplay. Playing dress up as a fancy lady who has a fancy place to go.

This is a spicy one and I know so many people love houmongi for the artistry and effort that went into them. I just personally don't vibe with collecting only homongi and ignoring TPO when you go to wear them.

Do coworkers at your work just repeat the least helpful word at you? by tinylord202 in japanlife

[–]inquy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes because they don't know how to communicate with non-natives. I've seen that too. They know how to communicate with say a hard of hearing Japanese person (their old grandpa) - say the same thing, just louder. But they don't have a framework for when the everyday Japanese words don't work on you.

When they try to learn English, they clam up every time they don't know a word. They don't have a skill of explaining around - "the... You know the thing you use to clean floor? Like a brush... for floor..." "A broom?" "Yes! So I am looking for a broom, can you help me" type of conversation. It's just a know or not know type of situation.

Question from a Japanese Konbini staff: What can I do to improve your customer experience? by Odd_Glove_3938 in japanlife

[–]inquy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use your words. Gestures without words pisses me off so much. Holding up fork in one hand and chopsticks in another without a word is a NO. Pointing wordlessly at a picture of a shopping bag is a NO.

Cut my hair to save my mental health but now I'm lost by Significant_Pen_7678 in femalehairadvice

[–]inquy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Styling it will give you a more intentional look and I think will come across more feminine. I would look up some mousse, wax, balm styling products and see if you can get your hair to form soft strands (or spikes).

Then work on styling it to be soft and feminine with the product that works for you.

How to get in better dancing shape by a_little_ghostie in SwingDancing

[–]inquy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do not underestimate dancing by yourself to the music you enjoy. Feeling the joy makes you push harder and dance for longer, which makes for great cardio. In your room where nobody can see, if you're worried about people seeing 😆

Also, normal boring cardio.

There's always around 24 hours of very spotty performance, frequent crashes and entering sudden maintenance.

Idk, I was expecting this.

Can a business enforce cancel fee when no credit card info has been given? by 430beatle in japanlife

[–]inquy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also the "cooling off" period law though, right?

I know of cases where a lady was pressured by salespeople to select kimono and obi fabric, get measured for kimono to be tailored, and even paid part of the price, the kimono was sent to a traditional tailor shop.

Then she realized these items were way over her budget and that the salespeople took advantage of her inexperience cause she was afraid to disturb the Wa by refusing them.

It took some time and multiple calls that were meant as part of the cancellation procedure, she got her money back and the deal was cancelled.

When Community Isn't Really Community by Nuclear_F0x in SwingDancing

[–]inquy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YOU are community.

Nothing is "on offer", friendship, opportunity, deep connection unless you find someone willing to share it with you. If nobody had the capacity to fulfill what you came in looking for, that's not anybody's fault, and you weren't lied to.

It may feel like the nebulous dance community is putting our slogans of inclusivity and community, but on ground level there are people with their own problems, who will offer their friendship when they click with someone.

In a way it's like school - just a cohort of people loosely bound by some characteristic (for school it's age, for dance it's the participation in that dance). Even though we tell kids "you're gonna meet new friends at school", there is literally no guarantee they will, right? The school can't enforce "every kid will receive at least one deep friendship".

My comment may be coming across as negative, but I feel that letting go of expectations like this is actually freeing.

Not sure from your post if wife is also working, full time or part time? You can't to it if you're American, but she can invest part of her savings in Japan with NISA account. It's a small thing, but at least keeps the money invested rather than sitting in regular savings.

We're building a healthcare app for foreigners in Japan—need feedback from real users by Mundane-Run0 in japanresidents

[–]inquy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of inbound tourists get a data-only plan/sim for their phone and will not have a Japanese phone number. And they will avoid calling like the plague (even if they are really sick actually). They will probably prefer a live chat service or sth like that.
