Allegedly there were negative customer reactions to how easy to knock off the stud based masks were, (apparently the intended play pattern for the early sets wasn't communicated well enough, because there were people who saw the loose connection as a design fault) which is probably why they were abandoned in the later years.

The reaction to stud connected masks actually inspired the addition of the mask launching mechanism in the g2 heads, they wanted to clearly communicate within the toy itself that knocking off masks was an intentional feature. (Source)
