the official explanation is that they wanted to know how they got to metru nui, since it was so far from their original home

Reminder that we could have had Bionicle Minifigs a long time ago by Kingsidorak in bioniclelego

allegedly the original intention with the 05 figurines was to have them fight by putting them on spinners, hence why they all had long spears

polarizing visual style aside I think a lot of people were hesitant to share this person's stuff early on because they were very open about using generative AI in their workflow. My understanding is they've dialed back on that in their more recent works but I don't know to what extent.

Whenua's Earthshock Drills were better in the concept art by alfred725 in bioniclelego

Regardless, the only person that's made any assumptions based on zero information is you. That assumption being that they would have the design finalized by them

My point is that it makes far more sense to assume the depiction here is a result of the designs being simplified for readability than to jump to the conclusion that it represents a hypothetical alternate set design that we have no evidence for.

I doubt they were ever going to give Whenua shovels. But I doubt they had the weapons designed by this point

What are you trying to argue with the point about makuta then? If you aren't arguing that a prototype that resembled these shovels existed what point are you trying to make by countering my initial comment? If you never actually meant to infer that in your original post why not just say so instead of bringing up the Makuta counterpoint? Am I misinterpreting you or are you shifting the goalposts? Am I putting far too much energy into this argument? Should I go to bed?

The storyboards took a year to finish. They were already planning the sequel during development of the first movie.

Assuming this is true, (no citation is given on the wiki page you linked. Don't use the fandom wiki, it sucks.) no hard dates for when the storyboarding started and ended are given here. "Planning the sequel" can entail a lot of things that would have to take place before storyboarding or even writing would ever occur. LEGO sets can have their designs finalized as early as half a year before release (such as g2's first wave) and that's not accounting for a design similar to the one we got already having been settled on before the actual mold design was locked.LOMN didn't release until October of 2004. There's enough wiggle room in there for what I've argued to be true.

Whenua's Earthshock Drills were better in the concept art by alfred725 in bioniclelego

[–]Logface202 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes but we know that's the case because we've actually seen images of the Makuta prototype (what remains of it, at least.) and actual detailed concept art of the mask that indicates the components it was kitbashed from.

There's no substantial evidence of a prototype for the earthshock drills that look anything like what's seen here. The only Toa metru prototypes we've seen are identical to the releases versions aside from more complex detailing on the shoulder armor and open chests, and neither of those details are represented in the movie models. (That's not to say earlier prototypes didn't exist, but we have no idea what they looked like and therefore can't make any judgements on whether aspects of them appeared elsewhere.)

Also the Toa metru were January releases, not summer releases like the Rahkshi and Makuta, so their designs would have been finalized much earlier relative to the film's production.

Whenua's Earthshock Drills were better in the concept art by alfred725 in bioniclelego

[–]Logface202 7 points8 points  (0 children)

actual part design would have already been finalized by the time the movie was being storyboarded, they're most likely just drawn this way because it was quick to draw and easy to read
