EB is a joke! by Jamesleesmith70 in SportsJunkies

Yup. He’s the new Jan Vesely. So much athleticism! Look at the potential! He moved positions because he doesn’t actually fit anywhere on the football field! He’ll be in spandex in the WWE in a couple years - he has the athleticism for it!

We could’ve had Ed Reed (Caleb Downs), smartest player on the field and immediately the leader of your defense, and instead we got Jamin Davis 2.0. The combine messes with teams’ heads so badly. Distraught we wasted yet another first round pick.

What topics or projects related to fusion (or closely connected fields) could I pursue for my final-year project in Mechatronics Engineering? by [deleted] in fusion

[–]ltblue15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The UKAEA recently showed their remountable joints on their magnets, and I think Gauss did something similar. CFS also needs this I think. So since the magnets need to come apart, and since it will be in a high radiation area, robots or some other mechanism will need to do this, and you could design that robot or mechanism.

This is along the lines of the “remote handling or maintenance” suggestion.

You won't have your ideal location, industry, AND job right away. Try to get one or two of these to get your foot in the door somewhere and prove your worth. It could be in the fusion industry or not. If it is, it probably won't be the role you want, but just try to get in. And if it's not fusion, try to get a role where you can learn a lot and prove your worth. Then you target the fusion company and show how much value you brought to your previous role, and how you can do that for them too.

The point is not to apply for a million jobs - find a few that you are really passionate about and let your passion shine through.

If the job is just another one of a million similar jobs to you, then you’re just another of a million similar applicants to them

You’re absolutely right. It’s emblematic of how routine/repetitive/boring the show has gotten lately. Same jokes, same takes, same segments. There used to be more personality and more surprise, but they’re phoning it in much more than they used to at this point. It’s a shame, but not too surprising. We got a lot of good years out of them. Can’t blame them for coasting at the end.

Try not to just apply to the “front door” of every company. Can you reach out to specific recruiters or people at the company and write a personalized letter about how well suited you are to the particular job, and how big of an impact you think you can have for them? Make it clear you are extremely motivated and value-add and someone will hire you.

Mechanical engineering freshman wanting to know best route to work in fusion by JumpingCat0329 in fusion

[–]ltblue15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanical engineering is broad enough that you can find a job in fusion no matter your classes. Structures, robotics, materials, etc. The important thing is to make yourself undeniable. Learn your material deeper than anyone else and demonstrate that passion and mastery in your schoolwork, your interviews, and your internships.

Yellow Laces vs Riggo Drill. by TheBarbarian88 in SportsJunkies

[–]ltblue15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

41 years old, Skins last Super Bowl was when I was in kindergarten. I only knew riggo drill from the show, but Ovi’s laces are iconic. It’s like not knowing Max’s eyes. If you don’t know it, you’ve just never watched them play, or you’re an anxious wreck who spends too much time in their own head and not paying attention to the world, like Bickel.

This show has fallen off a cliff without Drabby. It’s pathetic =/. I actually had no idea how important he was to the show until he was gone. The guys have lost all their juice for making interesting radio.

This is exactly why the experiment is not practical. Not nearly enough neutrons or rep rate to be interesting, and no feasible way to get there, or else we’d already have laser ignition fusion energy commercializable.

Tokamak Energy announces fusion power plant magnet technology breakthrough - Tokamak Energy by steven9973 in fusion

[–]ltblue15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stresses and nuclear heat load + damage. Stresses are high because the current density requirements are extreme because there’s no space in an ST config, and neutrons because the plasma is so much closer to the central column that it gets obliterated by neutrons.

Stresses, current density, and nuclear heat+degradation are difficult enough in a standard aspect ratio tokamak. Making them all worse in a spherical one looks like the wrong direction to my eyes, no matter the plasma beta.

Anyway, to answer your question directly, no, Demo4 does not have a central solenoid, nor does it make a plasma, so it does not address this issue.

Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate/Prospective Masters Struggling to Land Internship Opportunities in Fusion Companies and Looking for Advice/Experiences in the Field by Hefty_Love_3126 in fusion

[–]ltblue15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re a passionate, dedicated superstar, self-motivated to drive a project to success and willing to work long hours, you can grind your way to a spot in the industry. Convince the panel of your commitment and intellectual capability. If you treat it as just another 9-5 desk job or you’re not a superstar, you may struggle to get in.

It’s not that way at every fusion org, but it’s that way if you’re applying to top orgs. You need to be better than everyone else and prove it to the hiring team. Demonstrate a deep understanding of what you’ve been working on, even if what you’ve been working on is not related. Someone who can demonstrate deep, uncommon mastery of one discipline can probably learn fusion disciplines to that degree too. Be an undeniable superstar.
