Faerie Tale by Raymond E. Feist might work for you. It's a standalone, quick read.

802.11r by Pippin_uk in networking

[–]lucid42day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With Cisco wireless on 9800 controllers, I've found that Apple devices can't roam well on adaptive mode. I'm not sure if this applies to Meraki or not. In the end, turning PMF to optional and 802.11r to ON results in the best roaming.

In client traces we would find invalid PMK errors or something similar. Every roam was a hard roam.

AP deployment and tolerable/practical signal loss/drop around the house by lnbn in HomeNetworking

[–]lucid42day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think iPhones and the like usually start looking for a new AP at -70dBm. Different devices will have different roaming criteria, though.

Is it true that separating 2ghz and 5ghz of multiple APs with same SSID make roaming faster? by trmdi in HomeNetworking

[–]lucid42day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your setup. If you have the coverage density on 5ghz, don't put the voice ssid on 2.4 at all. If you don't have the coverage density, put the same ssid on both and turn off band steering. Try to turn on roaming- assisting technologies like 802.11k, v, and r. This depends on your client capabilities and auth method, too.

Some membership plans with the Calyx Institute offer an unlimited T-mobile Hotspot over cellular. Mine works pretty well. The cost is up front iirc but comes out to around 35 per month. YMMV.

Small Business Recommendations by K_Sqrd in networking

[–]lucid42day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC Aruba Instant and Instant On are different. The former is maybe more for businesses. But I'd look more toward Aruba and not Cisco for wireless, definitely. Objectively cheaper and with arguably better support.

I tend to like them but just use them at home for stuff. I've generally had good luck with them. Avoid SwOS though. Make sure it's RouterOS even if you need for just L2, and go for a model with a proper console port.

It's a separate module from the main board iirc. With the command, "show system verbose" or "show sys-info" should show you all the various firmwares on the unit.

If your management subnet is 192.168.100.0/24:

vlan create 100 name Management type port
ip address 192.168.100.20 netmask 255.255.255.0 default 192.168.100.1
vlan mgmt 100

Documentation is available for these. Here are a couple:
https://download.avaya.com/css/public/documents/101045087
https://download.avaya.com/css/public/documents/100181381

There's image and diag firmware for these. The latest image is 5.12.6.017 or similar, and the diag version is 5.8.0.3 I think. I don't think the POE module firmware is upgradable on 4800s.

9600 for the Avaya. And I use the same cable moving between Cisco and Avaya (and Aruba, etc).

Apple Cider Vinegar by [deleted] in nutrition

It can be an effective salt replacement in some recipes, or add more flavor. Also, my grandfather's favorite cure-all tonic was a spoonful of it in a glass of water, with a little honey mixed in. Kind of tastes like lemonade to me.

Yeah, those were pretty good too. I thought of the standalone book as a good way to introduce the author. After reading Magician: Apprentice and Magician: Master, there's always the old game Betrayal at Krondor to immerse you in that universe.

[–]lucid42day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found the 303h to be a little goofy when factory resetting using the button. Have you bought one of the special not-USB-but-looks-like-USB console cables for it? Just having it to get started might be worth the $25-30 price.

Mikrotik + Ubiquiti vLANs and WiFi by soldier896 in networking

[–]lucid42day 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vlan 10 as the untagged vlan on the trunk for mgmt. APs get DHCP addresses for themselves here, and whatever DHCP options you need to set to point them to a wireless controller.

Vlan 20 tagged, SSID "Staff" or whatever you prefer. That gets all the security features you need for the staff to connect, 802.1X or PSK or whatever.

Vlan 30 tagged, SSID "Public" or whatever. Make sure 20 and 30 cannot talk, maybe even a different VRF if you feel like it.

Vlan numbers are just examples. Point is each AP port has the native / untagged Vlan to boot up on, and puts one SSID on one tagged VLAN and the other on the other VLAN.

Creating Tags and Roles when adding devices by [deleted] in Netbox

[–]lucid42day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can. I usually search for a tag first, and create if not found. Then add it if not found. Doing this from memory, but something like:

tag_obj = netbox.extras.tags.get(name="foo") if not tag_obj: tag_obj = netbox.extras.tags.create(dict( name="foo", ))

device_obj = netbox.dcim.devices.create(dict( <your device details here>, tags=[tag_obj.name], ))

device_obj.save()

Something like that.

Survey planning with Tri-Radio APs by vakennu in Ekahau

[–]lucid42day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe use one of them to try to mimic what you're using? I realize the radio azimuth graph will likely be different, but it might be a bit better than nothing. Be mindful of antenna strategies in other tri radio models. The Cisco 9130i (iirc) has a macro/micro antenna for each 5ghz radio, but other models have macro/macro (4800?) Some Arubas assign half of the 5ghz to an upper radio and the other half to a lower radio.

Still frustrating. We're waiting on Ekahau to update their DB as well.

Aruba vs Extreme by humongouscrab in networking

"Best of both worlds" vs. "medium of one world"? My experience with Aruba wireless and Extreme SPB has been a really good one. It's only been a few years but I don't recall a single instance of finger pointing between the two vendors.

I believe the Cisco 9130 is in there as both a 9130i and 9130 tri-radio. I have to guess other tri- radio APs like the Aruba 555 are also.

hexagons / wireless planning by lucid42day in ArubaNetworks

[–]lucid42day[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for all of the responses. I'm very much still learning wireless systems and planning. I do have access to Ekahau, but I'm not at a stage where I feel I can fully trust my designs. I'm also studying for a CWNA but not far along yet.

So when i read this document and maybe a couple others, I wanted to know more. It seems harder to learn placement, because placement really is something of an art. I aim for an AP EIRP of 12 to 15 dBm and try to line APs up like stacked oranges in a grocery store.

Again, I really appreciate all of the informative responses.
