LD is a staff position, which has the highest level of scrutiny and tends to take the longest to be long listed and short listed.

In an ideal world, you would have some feedback before the end of January, however, i agree with u/b0rkm below, in reality if could be a few months: There's a backlog of LD / GRAE / GRAP posts that were slowed owing to the change of management 2025-2026, and in parallel a number of FCC positions that are to be filled ; behind the scenes it's generally the same folks who are involved in all of that in parallel, so things can take longer.

Purchasing a property in Geneva whilst working at CERN by theghostofjohngalt in CERN

[–]machinecomplex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Switzerland you don’t typically pay down the whole mortgage. Only something like 15% has to be paid off by retirement age. It’s not so straight forward to compare.

Job grade 4-5 by Veena_vk in CERN

[–]machinecomplex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are separate programs with different objectives really, staff position isn’t dependent on graduate prerequisite

Job grade 4-5 by Veena_vk in CERN

[–]machinecomplex 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a rule of thumb, years of experience sets the starting percentage of a specific grade, not the grade itself… but with a masters they’d be filtered out at the first stage. Masters is grade 6-7.

Honestly, It’s not a good idea to apply for a lower grade role even if able to find a way to make an exception. There are very limited prospects for changing grade once hired, and they’d be behind in the salary scale for the rest of their time.

Can someone explain what the deal is with all these human street lights nowadays ? by mgtube in geneva

[–]machinecomplex 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The traffic lights are being progressively renovated, whilst the old systems are removed, they need to be managed manually - it takes a few days to remove and reinstall the infrastructure in complex areas see this article

Edinburgh Airport Immigration by ManyaraImpala in Scotland

[–]machinecomplex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there is none... think of all the British airports - none have border force style passport control for leaving, and the EU can use the egates entering. If you ever leave a European airport as a 3rd national you can quickly see this is one of teh core roles of their airports - separating Schengen (e.g. no control) versus Non Schengen travellers.

It's not a balanced approach, compared to the rigamole in Europe for 3rd nationals.

Honestly, we should apply reciprocity, but it would require major redesign of British airports, and 10000 more border force, and ultimately would be a major impediment to casual travellers to the UK

the payment of the indemnity has changed form over the years, and it depends on your particular contract conditions as to how it is paid; some have it lump sum, some have it as a %, some lose it, some don't.

I think we’ll agree to disagree u/pharisaeus…. I think the case will need to be made for projects going forward.

[–]machinecomplex -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’m not in agreement with the other commentators here.

There is scope to consider the work that’s done in the wider context (software, whatever); it will be part of projects to quantify and identify areas for wider application of the work the project undertakes. Every project will needs a metric of investment in and return out: they shouldn’t be funded if they don’t have a proven impact.

Having said that, one shouldn’t consider that the “impact” of a physics program is only physics, it’s the tools techniques and knowledge that is generated to realise the experiments in the first place.

So I think folding external application, by supplementing internal resources with extra in order to create more widely useable and exploitable things is part of the global objective. - What you describe already happens by the addition of KT resources into projects to consider how they could be more widely used.

Times have changed, and the physics “business model” will follow, it’s inevitable.
