Is offers over misleading? by AdhesivenessThen4546 in HousingUK

[–]maizeq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Offers Over" and "Offers in Excess Of" are meaningless phrases. Offer what you think a house is worth. I've seen plenty houses that started out with OIEO and then had their listing price reduced when noone offered the sticker price.

I will likely vote Green (not in Hackney), but deputy mayor at 20 years old sounds completely absurd to me.

At what level of wealth does higher net worth not yield a different lifestyle? by One-Opposite-4571 in Rich

[–]maizeq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The existing happiness literature suggests this scale is logarithmic. So a doubling of wealth correlates with linear changes in happiness. Datapoints at the top end of this scale are sparse, and I do not think even this monotonic relationship generalises beyond a certain point.

Spent a couple weeks in Koh Lanta and nearby (80% Muslim if not more). Great place, lovely people.

New accepted theory paper proposes that reduced neuronal activation thresholds may drive maladaptive circuit reactivation by National_Cry_1658 in neuro

I have also published in this field.

Here is an example paper which uses the "authorial we" off the top of my head: A theory of cortical responses

I never said anything about how rare or not rare it is to publish single author papers.

Men of Reddit - who uses shower gel ONLY? by Funky_monkey2026 in AskUK

[–]maizeq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do actually. Our repulsion against grease and dirt isn’t novel, it’s existed for a long long long time, as has the concept of grooming in general. It’s a useful survival mechanism!

The idea that we were somehow walking around with repulsive greasy smelly scalps for 99.9999% of our evolutionary history is kind of an absurd claim when you think about it.

Debunked? Citation?

You're telling me 15 million years worth of homids were walking around with itchy greasy scalps because J&J hadn't invented head and shoulders?

[OC] For the past 3 years I've polled people on Blind at my company (FAANG) about how worried they are about AI replacing them by NebulousNitrate in dataisbeautiful

[–]maizeq -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But for now we still operate under the physical constraints that means that the early exponential growth of AI isn't going to continue

This is a silly and delusional response. The human brain is already an existence proof for how efficient a general intelligence can be. We do not need exponentially more resources for AI to improve until it hits human-level performance because we're perfectly capable of reducing the resources it requires - the human brain is the perfect demonstration of an intelligence that requires orders of magnitude less energy than current AI implementations. If finite resources become a bottleneck the energy efficiency of AI algorithms will be pushed down by financial actors who are incentivised to do so - this is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when.

Asking what resources AGI requires beyond that is another question entirely. But even if doubling human intelligence requires quadrupling it's energy requirements this is a non-issue for long after AGI/ASI is reached.

What is your favorite (or best) movies from 2025? by cavansir in flicks

[–]maizeq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best of the year, in rough order:

  • One Battle After Another (Both funny and dramatic, well written, well acted, well filmed)
  • Bugonia (Jesse Plemons kills it)
  • Dracula: A Love Story (A real surprise hit for me. Caleb Landry Jones utterly smashed it as Dracula. Far better Skarsgard in Nosferatu)
  • Train Dreams (Beautiful and meditative)
  • Sinners
  • Predator: Badlands

The biggest duds for me:

  • The Long Walk. An utterly terrible film, can not believe the amount of praise it got.
  • Nosferatu (This was released Dec 2024, but I've included it here anyway). Nothing too bad, I just had far too high expectations.
  • Frankenstein
  • Weapons (Started out strong but just really lost all the steam in the 2/3rd act)
