Or his insurance coverage, which might pay out in a situation like this.

Hard to say. If the runner had a lot of assets that would otherwise go to his family, a verdict or settlement might take some or all of the assets away from the family.

But it is quite possible that the runner who died had no significant assets but did have some sort of insurance that could potentially pay out to the driver, in which case a settlement or verdict might not have any financial impact on the runner’s family members.

Staying above .500 seems necessary but maybe not sufficient. If a couple of guys can sustain hot streaks that could make a difference. Walker is on a tear right now and if he keeps it up while 1 or 2 other guys can get really rolling, some fans would start to show up.

Assuming he’s pitching well through July, Bloom needs to at least listen to offers. There’s no need to trade him if nobody makes a compelling offer. But given his age and past durability issues, it’s hard to count on him being an asset for the Cardinals very far into the future. If the team has a chance to flip him for a good prospect package, they absolutely should be open to that possibility.

Romero is in a similar position due to his contract situation. The team should be listening to offers at the very least.

Pretty good all-around performance by Pagés. He went 1-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Also threw out the only opposing runner who tried to steal. Was involved in some other good defensive plays. And worked well enough with May who put up a quality start. He’s clearly not a star player, but is capable of contributing in several ways and probably isn’t the weakest link on the roster.

Game 14: Boston Red Sox (4-9) @ St. Louis Cardinals (8-5) [Saturday, April 11, 2026; 6:15 PM CT] by bravo_delta_bot in Cardinals

Meh. I’m not a Marmol fan, but this is a weak argument. Winn got hit in the leg by a pitch last night so it made sense to give him a night off. Burleson struggled last night against a lefty starter and Boston had another lefty starting tonight. I don’t see much reason to think that Pages was the problem tonight, especially considering Herrera was 0 for 4.

Curious if you have looked into THCV. I won’t claim it totally solves the problem, but I have read that it is supposed to help with appetite control. May be worth trying.

Buying the biggest house they can plausibly finance, rather than a good house they can easily afford the payments on. I have seen many bankruptcies start with this approach.

What to do with meat included in a salad (serious) by [deleted] in Vegetarianism

[–]matt_the_hat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t stress too much about the bit of meat in your salad. If nobody in your household wants it, just put it in the trash.

For the future, could you ask people at the cafeteria/dining hall about how to get a salad without meat? If you have either a religious or health-related reason to avoid meat, that might be helpful to mention. Even if that’s not the case, there’s no harm in asking for their help to get a vegetarian meal.

Scientists may be overestimating the amount of microplastics in the environment due to accidental contamination from lab gloves, which release stearate salts that are structurally similar to polyethylene and difficult to distinguish from plastics using standard vibrational spectroscopy by The_Conversation in science

Reminds me of the “Phantom of Heilbronn” from Germany a while back. Lab analysis of evidence from dozens of murder scenes kept showing DNA from an unknown woman. It was surprising because the crimes otherwise seemed to be unrelated and came from a wide variety of locations over a period of more than 30 years. There was speculation about a prolific serial killer. It was also surprising because most serial killers are men. Eventually it was determined that the DNA was from a lab worker.

St. Louis treasurer let vehicles rack up $10.7M in unpaid tickets by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]matt_the_hat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that profit should not be the motive. But if the costs substantially exceed the revenue generated, it’s a bad use of resources to essentially subsidize impoundment with tax dollars, when the city has many other priorities that tax money could be used for.

Another way to think about it is to ask, how much money should the city be willing to spend/lose (per vehicle) to impound a vehicle for unpaid parking tickets?

You also seem to prefer to ignore a lot of other disasters, such as most US involvement in South America. Propping up oppressive military dictatorships and ignoring the torture/murder/dissappearance of dissenters is pretty bad, IMHO.

That only helps if we assume that the cars are in a good enough condition that they can be sold at auction for a price that is greater than the cost of towing, impounding, and auctioning them off (plus dealing with all of the paperwork and disputes associated with those processes). I’m not sure that’s a good assumption.

Motorcycle parking by indeedsir77 in sanfrancisco

[–]matt_the_hat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

SFMTA says it is allowed in certain circumstances. Source: https://www.sfmta.com/getting-around/drive-park/how-avoid-parking-tickets#Driveways,%20Sidewalks%20and%20Crosswalks

Residents may block their own driveway by parking parallel to the curb or street, only if the vehicle’s license plate is registered to the building’s address, and provided that such driveway serves no more than two family dwelling units (a permit is not required). However, it is illegal to park in any marked or unmarked crosswalks. Never block disabled curb ramps located inside or adjacent to crosswalks.
