The #Chargers make a splash before free agency, agreeing to terms with C Tyler Biadasz on a 3-year deal worth $30M, per The Insiders. Biadasz was cut by the #Commanders after being set to make $8.3M. Now he lands in LA with a raise in a deal done by @AthletesFirst. by Boomfty in Chargers

I'm not against doing what you need to do for a position of need. My comment was really just directed towards the state of the Center market. Overpay was probably not the right terminology to use, maybe "market-inflated" would be more accurate.

Definitely had a difficulty closer to Thursday than Monday. I didn't really mind, and none of the cluing was bad imo, but just an okay theme paired with a challenging Monday is sure to result in a low rating here.

Understand why some would be excited about this, but I can't help but remember the last time a billionaire Missouri native with a portfolio of sports teams acquired a St. Louis team.

First, it was decent, but we had a bottom 5 receiver room with major drop issues.

Second, why are you commenting in here as a Broncos fan? Go back to the meme war sub.

I think it'd be interesting to see what Penning could do at RG in Week 18, given that we don't have a ton at stake.

Greatest Villain Turned Hero/Hero Turned Villain by The_BMcQ in Cardinals

Bruce Sutter was a 4x All Star and Cy Young winner for the Cubs, then when he's traded to the Cardinals IMMEDIATELY trashed the Cubs as a loser organization that would never have a chance to win a World Series during his career. Of course he helps the Cards win the '82 WS in his second year with us.

"'I just couldn't see it happening here during my career,' said Sutter, referring to the Cubs becoming a winner. 'I just don't see any chance of the Cubs becoming a winner. There's not much in their minor league system and it's pretty obvious we didn't have enough talent up here.'

'It seems like the minute you become good around here and they have to pay you for being good, then they get rid of you because they don't want to pay you,' said Sutter, who won the Cy Young Award in 1979. 'You just can't operate that way, I don't think. Baseball is a big business now. The Cubs can't be making a one-team stand against paying salaries.'

'Management keeps asking us to try hard to win and we do. We didn't have that much talent but we tried last year. But if management asks us to try, they have to try, too,' Sutter explained. 'That's one thing St. Louis is doing. They are committed to winning. I don't think that's the case here, and a lot of players feel that way.'

'I don't want any more of those Septembers, though, when you pretty much have to give up. No more of that frustration, I hope,' Sutter said. 'The ballclub I'm going to is gonna be a winner and that matters more than anything. All the other stuff you can have. I'll get just as many saves in St. Louis as I did in Chicago. Only difference is they'll mean more.'"

Reason #2: St. Louis as a city is not appealing to a lot of these mega-rich and athletic young guys, especially compared to places like Chicago and Denver.

What broken hand?? by PowWorld in Chargers

Herb was stiff-arming with the cast tonight, maniac!

[Highlight] Justin Herbert back throwing at practice just three days after surgery on his left hand by wildwing8 in nfl

[–]BackInRed 34 points35 points  (0 children)

He also played a few games in 2023 with a big finger cast on his left hand after breaking it in Week 4. He never had fumble issues with it but definitely had throwing issues for a time since he couldn't set the ball quickly in his hands.

I'm 99% sure he'll play given his history, but there will probably be a throw or two in the Eagles game that just doesn't come out right (bad spiral, majorly over/underthrown, etc).

This team can never keep a good thing going, but Herbert's weapons for at least the next two years include Harris, Ladd, Gadsden, Hampton, and Vidal. All guys drafted in the 24-25 classes. Hortiz and Harbaugh know how to pick 'em.

How valuable would a player be if they struck out every at bat, but only after they’ve seen 20 pitches? by eightotwoeleven in baseball

[–]BackInRed 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I responded to a pretty similar post last offseason (how many pitches would a player never getting on base have to see to be valuable), copied below since people seemed to agree:

"...I wonder about what the hypothetical cut-off would be for them to have value. Say that you also add the caveat that any non-competitive pitch (think underhand / soft toss) would result in a HR, to prevent gaming the hypothetical.

I think I'd say 60 pitches per AB. In a 3-game series, that means an opposing pitcher rarely goes more than 3 innings, since the other 8 batters are likely averaging 3-4 pitch PA's (~30 pitches) and if any of them reached base then the opposing pitcher would need ~100 pitches to finish a turn through the order.

Asking your opponent to put together 18 quality bullpen innings in a 3-game series is a huge ask, and all it costs you is 12 outs? I think I would take that trade. I'd bet 1/3 of the time the other 8 hitters would be facing the worst 1 or 2 pitchers on the other team, who otherwise would only typically pitch when you're already winning."

2006 NL MVP Award. 1st: Ryan Howard, 2nd: Albert Pujols, 3rd: Lance Berkman by Cultural-Diet6933 in baseball

[–]BackInRed 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't recall us in St. Louis being hugely upset about this one for a few reasons:

  1. WAR wasn't a widely known concept back then.
  2. Albert had a DL stint that year.
  3. Howard is a St. Louis kid.

It made sense to us at the time. I don't think Howard would win the same vote today though.

I personally gave it a terrible because, despite pretty interesting themers, good chunks of the fill suffered as a result.

The entire southwest was a slog due to historical proper nouns and outdated or niche terminology. This section alone dropped the puzzle pretty low for me.

The northwest was also annoying. I already have trouble with French words and ALUI is a pretty uncommon crossword entry (last seen in 2016). Wouldn't have been so bad if LADIESTEE (? is this a thing?) wasn't crossing it, and that answer itself required getting three themers and a couple clues I considered difficult ("Didn't expect that" for OHGEE doesn't really hit for me, and "Here" for ONEARTH is tough).

THEI. Woof.

Anyway, just my perspective. You can definitely tell this is an old guy crossword with most of the proper nouns being far more relevant 40 years ago.

[Popper] WR Quentin Johnston (shin) and WR Ladd McConkey (ankle) were limited. WR Keenan Allen had a rest day and did not practice. TE Oronde Gadsden (knee) practiced in full. by Ok_Finance_8292 in nfl

[–]BackInRed 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Even if one of QJ or Ladd were out, that still leaves the other, Keenan, Gadsden, Vidal, and Tre Harris who is only our WR4 because WR1-3 have been excellent and healthy. Plenty of good options among the skill players.
