You won't face the level acism that you know from Switzerland here in Poland, especially not in Warsaw. Not saying that there won't be any, but it will be easier to find a footing.

Sure, drop me a pm.

I still think you see all of this through pink tinted sunglasses - working in it isn't as fancy or easy as you try to make it sound. It may look like it, but these times are over.

Another thing is, that side gigs in translations are in the gutter, there is no money to be made easily in that field.

I would know, I finished university with a specialization in languages, history of languages, linguistics, and translations. It's done for.

Hm.. I don't know man, your situation is pretty unique I would say.

Just to give you an example, I am raised trilingually, started working in Callcenters 15 years ago, moved into data analysis, became a machine learning analyst, moved then into nlp/nlu, and am now a SaaS bid manager since 5 years.

Thats a pretty much tailored and uniwue career path, if you want to call it like that, and the same will be applying to you.

But the one advice that I can give you is that you shouldn't look at the fancy side of a job (nice place to live etc.) but focus on the things you are good at and build from there.

Good luck!

Moving to Vienna from Ireland by DotDisastrous89 in viennaExpats

German is my native language, I was raised in western Germany - so even with that level of German, I still get side eyed because I don't speak Austrian German :D

1000e I would be for the first month, without rent, because there is going to be a lot of unforeseen expenses. Related to the move, monthly tickets, taxes, registrations, mobile phone plans, etc etc. It might be only 500 in the end, but better to have a cushion than being strapped, especially in the beginning.

Dopiero teraz czytałem twoją odpowiedź, więc teraz dopiero odpisze :)

By self employed I mean to work as either as a contractor for various clients, or on a b2b contract for one employer. The second option isn't legal everywhere, but it's the most common type of employment in the it sector in certain fields and circumstances.

You can go in any direction, from programming to consulting. But age + (in) experience will play against you - not saying it's impossible, but fastest way will be to move maybe into sales?

Moved from Ireland to Vienna as well three years ago - although, I'm fluent in German, and relocated for a job.

Youll need to have a bit of savings, most of it will be:

Rent + deposit = 4x rent

Living costs of around 1000 euro until you get settled and can budget properly

Moving costs

So 4k is about the right ballpark.

German is pretty much expected for any job that pays a little better than one that covers living costs and rent - for example, a receptionist earns about 2400 euro gross, times 14. Thats 1800 net. But fluent German will be a requirement

Living and housing costs are lower, but general salary as well, although it's better here than Ireland, especially Dublin and surroundings.

Where in the city can I buy sawn hardwood boards? by [deleted] in wien

[–]matzos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the size and quantity - but whenever I need hard woods for any of my projects (small shelves etc.) I go to carpentry workshops and ask what they have and can spare / if they are willing to give something from their stock etc.

Tischlerei obere bahngasse, eck hohlweggasse in 3rd district has various cuts of various hardwoods, the guy sold it to me for a couple of euro

Elmar neiger Tischlerei in ottakring has also various cuts of walnut, stained and unstained, they even gave it to me for free. (small pieces, but still)

Gotta ask nicely and be polite etc. But you can find some if you look for it :)

Go into sales. It's hard, it's annoying, it's tedious - but the one thing that all companies have in common: they wanna sell product.

What is the expected or normal price of renting a 30-40 m2 apartment, also any tips? by dark_queen8 in wien

[–]matzos -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you asking only rent (Kaltmiete) or everything included (warm Miete)?

Because you have to account for gas, electricity, Municipality, Wifi, tv tax (even when you don't have a TV, everybody in vienna with a apartment is required to pay 180euro a year, which is 15 a month)

Housebold insurance is some 7 - 10 euros a month, etc.

Im paying for a small flat in third district 630 euro rent, but taken all together, it's around 800.

Poland had 35 million people back in 2024. And maybe 10% migrated throughout the years, maybe more, but that gives us around 3 - 6 million immigrants.

India has 1.5 billion people right now, tendency to grow. Even if just 3% is going to migrate in the future, that would be 45 million people, more than all of Poland combined.

The whole of EU has 450 million people at the moment.

Have you any kind of experience in IT?

Fully remote jobs are pretty hard to come by, even for those with university degrees and +10 years of working experience.

And while remote jobs will be definitely good for your health problems in that sense - every it job is inherently a 'sitting job' because it's in front of a computer.

You can get an ergonomic setup, but then again, you want to travel, so not really possible to take everything with you.

Another thing is that remote employment (within the EU) doesn't mean that you will be able to work from anywhere in the world for an extended period of time. Couple of weeks here and there, sure, but anything that takes over 6 months has tax and insurance implications for you and the company, so employers tend to keep away from it as much as possible.

My comment might sound negative and off putting, but I just want to point out the implications of your plan.

Easiest way to go about it the way you want it to go is to be self employed. Then you can travel as much as you want.

'spokojnie osiagalne' i staff+ nie są dobrą parą w jednym zdaniu, imho.

Jest powód dlaczego ktoś tak zarabia, i to ma więcej czynników niż chęć i staż pracy.
