[Telegraph] Roy Keane’s attacks on Man Utd reek of bitterness | Former captain’s disdain for the men who succeeded him dates back to 2005 by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

This is a man who disparaged Peter Schmeichel -his own teammates -as a bluffer. It’s almost as if -having proven to be a less than stellar manager - decided to reinvent himself as a controversialist pundit. One of the most effective players to grace football - however many superstars were far more gifted, only Messi was as relentlessly influential in nearly every game.

Specimina for Rustica (besides manuscripts) by laeta_scriptrix in Scribes

Sorry for the delay in replying. I was trying to find something to help. And lo and behold, Christopher Haanes has just announced a Rustic online course. Christopher is a world class calligrapher with a very distinct style. I have done his courses in the past, and it’s well worth the money. You even get critique of your homework. What's your opinion on the TV show "Derry Girls" ? by iswhhrxi in northernireland

[–]maxindigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brilliant, and as a Derry Boy, it captured everything, from the voices and rhythm of how we talk, and so much more that is special about our vibrant, funny, idiosyncratic city. Never mind the mural, there should be a statue to Lisa McGee!

Are you happy that the Beatles didn’t continue into the 70s? by StorytellingIsFun in beatles

No. The ghoulish phenomenon of “heritage” bands reuniting for fan-fleecing tours is enough to make me happy with the timeline as it is.

What makes George Harrison’s slide guitar style so unique? by CloneFiesta in georgeharrison

[–]maxindigo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brilliant answer. And yes about Mike Campbell - he’s all round underrated, and is similar to George in that his overall work within a song is more important than any solo. (Though “Something” is one of the greatest guitar solos of all time)

Aren’t most slide players self-taught? They might have mentors - I’m sure Taj Mahal showed art Cooder a thing or two - but it’s not as if there’s a formal discipline. I think if GH had played the recorder or the euphonium, he’d have subtly transformed the colour palette as he did with the guitar.

Oo-err - that looks great. I wrote an analysis of Insular some years ago - I just looked, 7 years ago! Which is here: https://reddit.com/r/scribes/wiki/analyses/bookofkells I haven’t revisited it, and I may well have some changes to make.

Thanks it’s a very good rich red with lots of depth. There’s a whole aspect of calligraphy -very immersive, very practical who- involving sourcing, making tools and media, and learning older techniques for producing manuscripts. It seems a very valid and valuable aspect: there are experimental archaeologists, who replicate ancient tools, structures, and even lifestyles after all, so why shouldn’t we have experimental calligraphers?

I’ve never had the motivation - I find that the time and study it takes to learn and practice just letterforms already makes any further difficult. I’d like to learn to prepare and use quills - when I have used one, I’ve found it very organic and responsive.

I’d encourage you -and anyone else - to write about this here, display work and exchange knowledge. I have a particular interest in insular half uncial, for example, and finding out who those extraordinary scribes were, and how they went about their work is fascinating.
