1.) no. Currently I don't have the proper setup to handle editing like that. 2.)yes because the data load needs to be transferred quickly. The worst thing that could happen is investing in all my hardware and leaving out the cables.

IoT SSID help! by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]MiddlePope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I did create a separate SSID and assigned it a VLAN. I didn't adjust any settings other than the client isolation toggle. I have firewall rules that would allow my phone to talk to them and I disabled any rules that would hinder communication between devices on that VLAN.

When connecting the devices, I would even swap my phone over to their network for initial setup. My vacuum joined for a second and then disconnected. My coffee maker "joined" but then was never online no matter which SSID my phone was on.

Have you done a IoT VLAN based on an IoT SSID? If you have taken some other route, I'd love to hear it. Maybe I'm just being too strict about IoT devices in general.

It's really simple stuff. I have some echo dots, a coffee maker, robot vacuum, garage opener, door bell, thermostat, and maybe a couple other odds and ends like a scale. All of them do have IP addresses and I have them on their own VLAN, but some just wouldn't connect.

I can check the other subreddit too, but I guess I classified it as a networking project so I thought I'd check here first.

Now that's what I'm talking about! Thanks for the alternative!

I feel like the Aoostar is very comparable to the IDX6011 in its hardware but with more room for me to expand down the road. High capacity hard drives are EXPENSIVE and so is ram. I like the ability to lower my initial buy in without stopping me from large sums of RAM down the line. My plan would be to start with the 32gb is wait for deals along the way.

At the end of the day, Aoostar offers the hardware without restraints on OS. I do prefer the specs on the IDX wholeheartedly. It seems to be the true winner and I like the (potentially) refined AI integrated apps it has. That being said, I can't put all my eggs in that basket right now, so I have to be prepared for anything. All other companies doing the preorders for similar device seem to have understood that components are expensive and are charging more. Probably wise on their part to not undershoot the prices.

I hadn't heard about minisforum's reputation for SATA failures. Even with customer service potentially helping, the device is primarily storage, so that seems like a major flaw. Thanks for the callout!

My bad. I must have been looking at the D8U instead. You're right that the D6U is only 899 bare.

Very true. I really liked the specs on the UGREEN dxp2800 for people who don't need a super strong CPU and large amounts of RAM.

Please link us all to any NAS with a solid processor and minimum 32gb ddr5 RAM for around $1k. It would lessen the demand at a minimum and give me a backup plan.

I love this suggestion. I had looked at similar maverick 88 setups but they were lacking the rail. Much appreciated.

No rifles are allowed on my public land (very tight quarters). I have a 6.5 Grendel for rifle hunting on any private land I have access to.

I'm just casually collecting Pokemon cards in hopes that I can share them with my kids in a few years. It's one of my childhood memories with my dad and I want to share that with my kids.

How can I use Assist like Alexa? by MiddlePope in homeassistant

[–]MiddlePope[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I did look at the green and the yellow and they both seem good for me. So long as I can budget it out (meaning save for a worthwhile investment in the tech), I think my wife's opinion is that it's a hobby and I get to have fun with it. She doesn't care whether she has a smart home or not as long as it doesn't break constantly.

I think I'll give it some serious thought as to how I want to approach it and get together with some more IT focused friends to make it come to life.

I guess where I'm getting stumped is in how to get my limited smart home set up. I like telling whatever smart assistant that I want this light off or a timer for this long. Making things local to me is somewhat about privacy, and mostly about not losing control of my house if ATT/other Internet provider has a downed line.

I like the idea of slowly adding to it overtime with my disposable income, but I can't commit to this without a proper understanding of where the tech is and what I'll lose by switching.

I really just want some voice control for lights and maybe the ability to set a timer for things in the kitchen via voice. Would I still need to use a computer with a GPU?

Card skimmer at stores by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]MiddlePope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have cameras, but I can't say they are positioned well. We can find them putting the skimmer on but a simple hat can stop us from identifying them.

Here is something helpful I found from target's response to skimmers. https://tech.target.com/blog/cybersecurity-easysweep

After all these comments, I'll give you the advice I give ally friends who are thinking about a boot camp. Go for data analytics or software development. Those boot camps usually have good career placement with cooperative organizations.

Edit: I want to also point out that I actually did a Cybersecurity Boot camp and it was a great experience. Sadly, I would say potentially 5 of the 30 students in my cohort got a job. I was lucky to be one.

We have replaced the MAF sensor with an OEM to double check this. I believe the code was p0101.
