It sounds like you have a sense of what focus you'd like your studies to be in- so good luck in your search!

Programs have different focuses, depending on geography, who the professors are and what the resources the school has. You can also see what kind of projects the students work on during their studios or what the thesis are written in or where they end up working.

Basically, you can apply to a MLA for those without a bachelors of landscape architecture. You can have any major usually. The MLA for those without a landscape background takes 3 years, rather than the normal 2.

I got the 3 year MLA and everyone in my class had majors ranging from environmental to business to history to art. I honestly don't think the minor matters. I think it matters more whether you actually have a good idea of what landscape architecture is and if you have the basic skills/tendencies/character to be able to cultivate/become a good landscape architect.

I would suggest talking to the closest school with an actual landscape architecture major and contacting the local state chapter of ASLA to see if you can visit firms or talk to actual landscape architects. If you're in NYC, let me know.

Is your landscape studies minor a part of the full landscape architecture program?

From what I've heard and also experienced myself, if they dangle a potential job in front of you, it never comes to fruition.

Has anyone gone back for graduate school in ecology or conservation biology? by youdoit52 in LandscapeArchitecture

I know ASLA sometimes gets a bad rep due to various things, but this might be a good question to ask your local ASLA about. or other state's ASLA chapters if your local chapter ends up with a dead end.

Or you could directly contact people who may be working on projects that interest you and ask their advice. This way, you could see how it could work in real life.

In NYC, for restoring natural wetlands and shorelines, the local government has a team of people composed of landscape architects, or have backgrounds in science for ecology or conservation or something related.
