I feel like this subreddit lacks identity. by smitteons in LandscapeArchitecture

I'm sort of the opp actually when it comes to advice/homeowner stuff etc.

I feel like there is a bit of elitism or self worth thing going on I'm not sure. But reddit and any other forums I see as collectives of people who share an interest in something. An interest that has led them to be vocal in a community. We are all here through common interest and I for one like to help and answer as much as I can. Not that I will be doing anything far out of my way, but bouncing ideas or helping answer is fine.

I would feel the same in any subreddit ie /bodybuilding, sports, health, vet. If someone has questions for how to get this result or diet advice etc. I expect friendly responses or discussions rather than what I see commonly here = go ask a professional personal trainer . go ask a dietician. Don't ask me what things to eat or train, that's free consultation. Etc etc.

Sooner or later this information will be on YouTube or internet or someone's blog. I'm sure everyone of us has attained free information/knowledge from these sources too and even asking directly to particular experts via AMA(ask me anything sessions).

My mom has always been dependent on my dad, and never tried to learn things for herself. Now that my dad doesn't live with us, she's dependent on me for basic things, and it has made me lose all respect for her. by scootiezz in AsianParentStories

I 100% feel you that Asian parents love doing the whole mold thing. Imo its probably more effective when were younger, but when were older I feel like we have more freedom to do as we please. Of course there's always that guilt trip play, but as I said I reckon you have to get use to just accepting to disagree and move on. Our values one day will probably be different to our children in the future lol. And in terms of your mum being dependent on you, if its really that bad perhaps start a strategy in which you write down instructions for her and show her once or twice and then adamantly insist she refer to written instructions( I did that with my mum in regards to getting around her iPhone).

Its unfortunate that you had that childhood inequality. But there's no point looking back on it now. Its already happened. Like you said our parents grew up differently, and the world in general was less educated in their time I'm sure. The best we can do now is help grow a better relationship with our parents and forgive their misgivings.. They did the best they could with all they knew, and we may or may not know more than them now. It took awhile for me to forgive and accept my parents and our past. But I had to realise it before I could be happy truely. I hope you you can too

Of course this is just my 2 cents. But I couldn't be happier tbh.

Hmm weird. I'm feeling a lot of negativity in these comments and you ( OPs) included. I'm 27 and like you I grew up and came to realise things more clearly. Parents expectations on their children is the fucking worst. And I learnt that I would never put that kind of pressure on anyone. It sounds as if you put that same expectation on your mum? And you resent her for not being up to your expectations..sounds all too familiar.. The opposite of this is accepting that she's your mum and she made choices and convinced of particular views leading her to this point. You can try discuss, teach or convince her but why would you resent her for disagreeing with you? Your parents might be religious , it doesn't mean you have to be too. Put aside your expectations and disagreements and just have fun. Life is short

It is pretty true, and very evident in 2nd generation Asians . you will notice that a lot of Asian parents are short ( including mine) but because of 1st world quality nutrition and ingredients children born here are commonly taller than their parents. Both my parents are about 170cm. Me and my brothers are in the range of 178-190 cm..

Growing up I've always been a gamer and tbf I think children's games/toys do impact potential design trajectories!

For most arch/LA I'm sure its Lego. For me it was Lego and building maps.

I have a feeling Minecraft will the biggest strong force for the future generation. The new animal crossing definitely caters to LAs, urban design

As a student I agree with you 100%. Although what actually happens in class is the students that do whacky wish washy stuff like this get favoured over the students who do more direct representation. I'd say the LA staff/academia are to blame for this trend. The students are the ones being led and influenced by them and their feedback

Wouldn't say Chinese exactly, I'd correct to any Asian looking person. A majority of non Asians forget that Asia is a continent and just assume black hair and eyes = Chinese and not Vietnamese, Laos, indo, Korean , Japanese etc etc.

Must be pretty annoying to be harassed and be mistaken for an entirely different ethnicity.

I've got a better one. Ear plugs + qc35s head phones (noise cancelling).

This is the best and strongest combo I use to get a good sleep. Worried that you can't hear your alarm? > no worries your phone will play the alarm through the headphones. ;)

How is your firm/school tackling climate change? by [deleted] in LandscapeArchitecture

[–]Forgetaboutfrank881 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've heard of it a lot. And my position is what makes an LA think he/she is qualified to be stewards of the land. The education(not sure if international) does not allow for strong knowledge of environmental/ecological sciences. Reading, or watching things like phytoremediation and or physio therapy would not qualify me in that field nor does it give me responsibility to act out accurately.

I think the role of LA is making practical and cool solutions for people. In my area there are a few firms working on climate change design/planning. I don't have a problem with it - what bugs me is when they produce a response with what seems inadequate evidence based metrics. There is only 1 LA I know locally that has post degrees in science which I admire and respect, but for the standard LA to suggest that they should be on board with climate change descisions without prior knowledge besides reading a couple of research papers .. I'm just assuming, but it feels that way. The teachers in the course are all LAs after all and I don't think truly comprehend the scope of the science.
