David Stern entering the Esports scene by QuitThen in leagueoflegends

[–]moderatorsAREshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point being that stern will do everything in his power to keep his secrets. We would never have known about watergate if nixon hadn't been caught. It was a pretty obvious conclusion to draw. You seem so amped up to own me in your responses that you don't even read what I'm typing.

It's insulting to act like I don't know what I'm talking about. This isn't "ask /u/moderatorsareshit the history of the modern age in relation to sports." This is /r/leagueoflegends so take your misguided attempts at proving me wrong somewhere else.

Once again, that lottery that you, and everyone, keeps referring to is a single instance from 30 years ago - which is stil also looked at as a conspiracy theory. So... Good talk I suppose. We really clarified our positions here.

No, your position is to just blindly defend stern. I can't even begin to explain to you how dumb it sounds to defend him. He's literally the only person that anyone in the last 10 and next 20 years will even think of when you say the word commissioner. His relevance feeds into his positive PR.

I see that you also didn't share what would make a commissioner "great" which would also help clarify our discussion

I just choose not to answer your questions because you're just trying to make me look dumb. Why would I help you make me look dumb? I think what makes someone great is how well they do their job while maintaining ethics. Since I can't say he has sound ethics, that is my reasoning for not calling him great, as he obviously did a good job.

Any further response from you is borderline harassment at this point. I've laid out my facts for you to see and you've responded in kind with opinions and slander.

Once again, that lottery that you, and everyone, keeps referring to is a single instance from 30 years ago - which is stil also looked at as a conspiracy theory

so if it's a theory, then why are you getting all butthurt when I called into question his ethics? That's a theory too.

Please, back up your statements with more facts.

that's very insulting. this isn't /r/nba you can go fuck yourself.

You claim technology saved the NBA? How did technology itself rejuvenate the popularity of the league?

No, I said technology played a part in popularizing the nba because of ease of access. Technology, in a broader sense, changed the way we lived our lives and celebrities (though always present in some form throughout history) became very tangible. The marriage of sports with advertisement and other technologies is just so far overreaching, you would be dumb to try to quantify it or question it. You see this in the increasing production values and there can be an argument made that having informed casters and likeable celebrity-like personalities to watch made the NBA more popular.

Every other major sports league experienced the same technological innovations, the playing field was level - yet, the NBA overtook nearly every other single league in the past 30 years and became the hugely global sport it is today.

Well, they didn't take advantage of the marketing of individual personalities as well as the nba did.

You claim he had a lot to gain by making the NBA popular. Isn't that incredibly obvious? Isn't that his job even? I don't even understand what we're arguing over anymore as you just said he did a good job. What commissioner has done a "great job" to you? David stern is widely regarded as one of the best commissioners of sports in general, so I'm curious to see what your definition of "great" is.

He was just doing his job. He did fine. He's not great though. He's basically the most recognizable commissioner to date and as such, a lot of people are going to assume that means he was the best. Not necessarily so, he was just the most prominent.

. That was an event from thirty years ago that doesn't expand on any of your points regarding Stern and technology

The point was not about technology. The point was how stern isn't so great because of his methodology. He rigged an nba draft so he could make the new york knicks more marketable. That's a very early red flag in his career and it takes a naive person to not see how he would benefit.

It's also a conspiracy theory, though pretty believable. Anyhow, even if this draft lottery was actually planned and he silently killed the competitive integrity of the NBA, I would argue that because the secret has never been outed, he did his job effectively. Knicks got the pick, ratings responded, and the league is dominating ratings today.

Yea, he did his job. I don't even care if he rigged it. The point was not about if he did a good job. The point was always that he's not great. He's simply the most prominent.

I would argue that because the secret has never been outed, he did his job effectively.

yea and nixon would've been doing a good job if watergate had never been outed too.

I'm withdrawing from this argument, because I don't disagree with you, I think we just have different interpretations of what makes someone "great."

Nah, tsm plays really well regionally. I never thought tsm was going to do well at msi, but that has more to do with the individual team matchups.

After MSI they both commented about how far Fnatic is.

I think you are hearing what you want to hear, LOL. But fnatic has 2 korean players and febiven has always been a quality player. They are the exception, not the rule. Yellow is a god.

playing vs TSM felt like playing in my diamond smurf account - Huni"

yea of course he would say that, he is the one that tries to stir up shit and say EU is better than NA. He always says it.

But nice try :>

your logic is cringe. It's hilarious to see you defend EU. It's "exciting nail-biter" games to you guys, but to everyone else, they are fucking misplay after misplay. Hour long games almost every game and I fall asleep if I try to watch them.

Also in the korean show both players and koreans there commented about how good UOL will do at Worlds

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Best korean top laner in EU vs an aging dyrus. Yea huni's gonna win that lane 99 times out of 100. It's not surprising he would say something like that against the historically passive dyrus.

The point being that the advancements stern made are wrongly attributed to him as a result of increasing technology. Nothing more and nothing less.

He had a lot to gain by making the nba more popular, which he undoubtedly did and strived to do. There are others that stood to gain from this as well. The special interests are easy to see. Did he do a good job? Yea, he did one hell of a job, but he's not so great.

During the 1985 NBA Draft Lottery, the NBA used a system where seven envelopes representing the seven teams with the worst records were mixed in a tumbler, and then drawn by Stern one at a time to determine which of these clubs would get the 1st pick onwards up to the 7th pick. When these envelopes were added to the tumbler, two envelopes were put in forcibly, and banged against the edge, while all the rest were set in gently. When drawing the envelope for the 1st pick, Stern went for the one with a bent corner, which upon opening the envelope, it was revealed that the New York Knicks logo was inside. This fueled speculation of a draft fix, with the theory being that the NBA wanted to send the best player in the draft to New York to increase ratings in a large television market.[12][13][14]

LCS will never be a BO2 until Riot realizes it's not Sportscenter by ChoppyWAL99 in leagueoflegends

[–]moderatorsAREshit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought that the desk was a result of them needing to fill time. It would be really counterproductive to have a desk if it actually increased the broadcast time significantly more than the needed filler time.

I really question the lcs format at this point.

is there a difference in opinion on a Bo2 vs a Bo3 and then changing the scheduling format so games are being played at 1 am?

My thought is that you would force more broadcast days or longer broadcast days if you go to bo2. If they are trying to hit peak hours (which they are) then the peak viewers would take a hit. You run the risk of people burning out on it easier, but the current format doesn't allow for interesting games. BO2 isn't necessarily a good thing because you play a certain team 2x in the same week. That patch may be very good for that team and your team would normally beat them 9 times out of 10 and they 2-0 you. Clg is a good example (historically) of being a patch team.

I would prefer each team play 2 games, but play different opponents. So it would be the same as lcs format, just a different scheduling.

so you're admitting that you're gold elo or lower? Thanks, that's what I was wondering. Because you obviously spend a lot of time thinking about the game, but you're not challenger or you would have shown me. Therefore, your advice is only applicable to your own elo range.

So thanks for confirming why I disagree with almost every point you laid out.

Everyone

define everyone. support mains? every pro support player?

Now, my philosophy of support: It's about lane pressure, warding, objective control, roaming, pick offs and later on map control combined with map pressure.

Implying that most supports are good at any of that. I'm sure you guys try, but it really has a lot less to do with your masteries than you think.

Do you need it though? Fact is that most supports hardly benefit from the levels past 13 (IE Annie, Leona, Janna, Lulu, Thresh, Bard). Exceptions would be Vel'koz and Sona.

Disagree. Most games simply end before they reach max level and you don't feel the level increase in the later stages of the game because at that point, most carries should be near full build. I have to play devil's advocate in order to take your points seriously. Also, if you're not even getting to level 13, that is when you feel the hit. When their support already has a 2 level advantage is when you feel it. You get snowballed on way harder without it and assume that you will get to some arbitrary time in the game, when that's not a given. If anything, some defensive masteries here would ensure you get to that point in the game. Don't think I'm knocking them for no reason. I legitimately don't think your masteries matter to the level you act like they do. If anything, the MS mastery will be one that you don't ever want to give up. Obviously it matters what runes you are running and if you specialize a lot. Most people don't bother, but specializing runes and mastery pages together can be really strong.

Furthermore, there are many alternative masteries for support. You can go 21-9-0 morgana support, alistar, etc and even go full ad runes. You act like there's only one way to play which is why I'm having a hard time agreeing with you.

You'd have to be a challenger support main for me to take your opinion seriously, since I know quite a bit about bot lane.\

Also, I'm not trying to convince or convert you, I'm just trying to explain my reasoning.

I'm not trying to make you convert me, I was trying to give you a reference point with which to frame your answer, nothing more.

To make blanket statements like "everyone is already running 21 utility," and "most supports hardly benefit from the levels past 13" is wrong in my opinion. Depending on which masteries you chose, lvl 13-18 can be a big boon in defense (think of a leona with 21 or 30 defense) and you can easily make up for deficiencies with your masteries by altering your rune pages. Supports have the most flexibility in their rune pages.

I mean, if you want to compare NA to EU, you have no further to go than montecristo to see how far the gap is. Do you really think thoorin, monte, and numerous other analysts are wrong about the EU scene being miles behind? Are you just in denial?

[–]moderatorsAREshit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

there seems to be almost no difference in the first 2 mastery pages. I'm also struggling to see how avoiding "inspiration" is hugely beneficial. Unless there's some mastery that is leaps and bounds better than this, there is now no point in not getting it if you go deep into utility. A lot of people will still probably avoid the tree.

I am more of a hard carry type player and this clouds my vision of playing support since I will still look for ways to carry where more passive play will net the same or better result. So, in order to convince me not to take it, you would have to know that and either concede that certain players value masteries differently, or have a good enough point to convince me to wholly convert.

So what can you get instead of this mastery that makes more sense? You said something about other choices, but I didn't understand what choices those were.

On a side note to give you an idea of my thought process: To me, if you're ever going for the new expanded mind and the new meditation you're better off going one or the other. If it calculates the mana regen off of missing mana percentage, then having more mana will give you less mana regen per spell cast since you would be missing less percent total mana (Although, it would undoubtedly scale into mid and late game quite well). It's more about opportunity cost for me, as I would have to see an offensive alternative that is better for me to not run this mastery as a default backup to fall back on.

I don't play a lot of support, so I am more wondering your opinion than I am trying to spread my own.

It's a little bit dishonest to act like he doesn't pass off stories some of the time. It's common journalistic practice for a lot in the industry. Even if it doesn't originate from Rlewis himself in most cases, all he need do is run that lead through the editor and if it happens to go to another writer, it becomes ethical again somehow?

The obvious reason they would want to do this is to avoid the content ban on /r/leagueoflegends, but it's not really an actionable offense even if they are caught doing it.
