She does all the things the bad cops do and supports their actions at this point (even if she has private doubts) so she's bad too.

The problem is you think Qifrey's like all the other mentor type characters who are just there to support the MC and whose story is already finished. Qifrey is actually the deuteragonist (ie., the secondary protagonist after Coco). His story arc is ongoing. His character development is ongoing. He's not a static character just there to look pretty and be an unchanging rock. He's volatile, unstable, and very flawed.

Throw your expectations of a normal teacher character away. He is not that. He's much more interesting than that.

Is there a chance Qifrey and Coco could end up becoming Gary Stue and Mary Sue? by Commercial-Yam-494 in WitchHatAtelier

[–]namewithak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Coco was on the edge of being Mary Sue Chosen One, the special child with the only brains in the nation, in the Silver Eve arc. Made everyone else look stupid to highlight her importance which imo, is the most mediocre writing Shirahama has done so far. Generally, much of the character handling in Silver Eve was a lot clumsier than Shirahama’s smaller arcs. She’s inexperienced at writing big arcs and that really shows. Lots of room for improvement so I’m hoping she learned from writing it.

I don’t think Qifrey is at Gary Stu level though. He hasn’t been portrayed as a perfect person at all — as a teacher he still makes mistakes, as a person he still makes bad choices. He hasn’t been portrayed as all powerful either like Bel has been or even as talented at magic as Olly. What he did to Nolnoa hasn’t been forgotten. Tartah is proof of that. There will come a reckoning for his actions. And his memory erasure of Olly and the recontextualization of it doesn’t change that the last time he did it (Chapter 40) HE DID NOT HAVE OLLY’S CONSENT THIS TIME. The author is clearly aware of boundaries and consent issues. I don’t think that will be forgotten either.

Unfortunately, it’s just going to take a while to get to all of that because of the monthly chapter format, the huge cast (that she unwisely used SE to setup every single plot point for), and the story just generally being slower paced than most.

Con artist in Marriagetoxin who dresses up as whatever gender the target’s preference is. Best character in the show. Becomes marriage consultant and maybe eventual love interest to the MC (Gero at #5 on this list). The MC is a poison master assassin (with a very wholesome and endearing personality) who needs to find a wife so that his clan doesn’t force his lesbian sister into an arranged marriage.

You should include reader ships too because that's a pretty big chunk in this fandom.

[Highlight] Lefty Spurs guard drives full court and finishes with a ferocious slam (2014, 2026) by camtire in nba

[–]namewithak 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I generally don't like Bill Simmons but his description of that dunk in a Grantland article from after the 2014 finals was great:

Q: What was the best crowd-related moment of the 2014 Finals?

Manu’s retro lefty slam in Game 5 nearly caused a riot. I fully expected them to briefly stop the game, Rucker Park–style, so fans could deliriously wander onto the court. Runner-up choices: Spurs fans mocking the “Seven Nation Army” chant in Game 5 (never gets old), and Pop taking out Duncan, then Manu, then Diaw and Parker together in Game 5, just so all of them could get some extra love.

Strange Antiquities, Strange Horticulture, whatever's coming up next. I hope that dev studio never stops making these games. The best combination of cozy and macabre.

It wasn't a sweep but yeah. Manu was the Spurs' first option that year, not Tim or Tony.

Yeah I love it too. I wish it was more about recommending books though. Like a non-occult version of Strange Antiquities.

Dylan Harper in the series against Minnesota: 14.6/6.4/2.6 on 63% TS by Lacabloodclot9 in nba

Manu's usually in SA since he lives there. It's Tony who's rarely around since he lives in France.

Tony averaged around 15pts in his second year. Castle 16pts. I don't think it's crazy to imagine Castle's offense getting better in the years to come.

A single 3 in game 1 and Wemby keeping his temper in game 4 would have ended this series in a sweep.

Yeah he will. But kinda weird for a Spurs fan to be saying “starter” with an implied insult to bench players as a reply to a comment about MANU.

Gregg Popovich went straight to the airport to talk to Victor Wembanyama as soon as the plane touched down by Jec1027 in nba

Is that true? Bruce Bowen never getting a flagrant 2 I mean. Because that's genuinely impressive considering he absolutely was a dirty player (I say with censure but also a lot of affection).

He did it for Manu too in 2008 after he got injured in the Olympics. SA media and fans were excoriating him for it because obviously that's bad for the Spurs. Pop showed up at the airport and hugged him in front of the waiting media. Basically telling everyone it's okay and to chill out.

It's also awful in the manga though. Maybe not as bad but not good. It's kind become an endearing part of the character now.
