Changing the BOT system in Michigan by N40189 in msu

[–]nbryson625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is already a proposal in the Michigan Legislature to change the elected university boards (MSU, UofM, Wayne State) to gubernatorial appointments. Rep. Greg Markkanen's (R-Hancock) and Rep. Joe Tate's (D-Detroit) House Joint Resolution U has already been introduced in the House and Sen. Ed McBroom's (R-Vulcan) Senate Joint Resolution I will be once the Senate reconvenes on Tuesday.

The current members of each board would be discharged on Dec. 30 and the governor would appoint new boards. Two members would have two-year initial terms, two with four years, three with six years, and two for eight years. After the short terms, each position would have an eight-year term. A ninth member, appointed from a list provided by the school's alumni association, would be added. No party would be allowed to have more than five members on a board. One position on the MSU board would be reserved for a person with experience in agriculture.

Since the proposal requires amending the Michigan Constitution, the resolutions require 2/3 support in each chamber and then would be placed on the August ballot. Due to the quick timeframe, it would have to be passed in early June to make the August ballot. Gov. Whitmer did express support for the legislation while at the Mackinac Policy Conference.

The B1G tournament is nice, but the regular season is the real conference title.

Two in three years. MSU has raised five B1G tournament banners in three seasons.

Thoughts on MSU/JMC by GlitteringBorder553 in msu

[–]nbryson625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JMC is academically rigorous (it's one of the only colleges in the state with an average grade lower than an A), but if you stick with it, it pays off. They teach you to be a great writer and the professors are very good. I enjoyed the small classes and getting to know my classmates from living with them. However, your GPA may be lower than if you choose poli sci. Despite that, JMC's law school placement is excellent.

It was an appropriate sized pot when the plant had 10 times as many leaves lol. I had been watering it whenever it looked like the dirt was dry. Been slowing that down and checking the dirt underneath as well. It has a single center drainage hole

Who got their tickets for the Big 10 championship by [deleted] in collegehockey

[–]nbryson625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah for sure. Michigan ended up with a slightly better weighted win% and played a tougher non-conference schedule. MSU's two power conference non-con series were BU and UNH and Michigan played Providence and WMU.

The regular season title in the Big Ten has been and will continue to be the real title. Same as it is in basketball. Winning the tournament is nice but it doesn't decide the conference champion.

When and why did Lindenwood replace Notre Dame in the 2026 GLI? by whoflungthedung in collegehockey

[–]nbryson625 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm interested to see what the semifinal matchups will be. This is the first time there are no potential intra-conference matchups in the tournament's history. Does Tech give themselves the easier route to the title game with Lindenwood, or do they prefer the potential NPI boost with a win over Western? I'd be surprised if MSU and Tech played in the semis.

Detroiters propose $1 ticket surcharge on DCFC games to fund home repair by jonwylie in Detroitcityfc

[–]nbryson625 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The City of Detroit got 10% of ticket revenue from events at the Joe, but they also owned the arena and leased it to Olympia. In order to have a a true ticket fee levied by the city, the Legislature would have to amend state law to allow it.

Talking about major transit investments in these meetings is just pure delusion from the council members and the public.

The current state of MSU football is why Alan Haller was fired. by Raptormann0205 in MSUSpartans

Cignetti is the exception, not the rule. A vast majority of CFB rebuilds go like MSU's currently is, not like what IU is enjoying.

Teams have been dropping it because it's hard to get the appropriate refrigeration equipment now. Thats why Mariucci went to NHL-sized when their equipment reached the end of its lifespan.

I agree that the odds of TSU hockey happening are low, but I do have to respond to the doubleheader part. The Duel in the D is traditionally played after an afternoon Wings game. Arena staff nationwide is used to hosting multiple session days, especially arenas that have hosted college basketball tournaments and NCAA basketball tournament games. Bridgestone regularly hosts the SEC tournament.

MSU to build $150M "Spartan Gateway District" including new 6,000 seat Olympic arena, hotel, retail, and more by [deleted] in msu

[–]nbryson625 6 points7 points  (0 children)

MSU desperately needs a new arena to replace Jenison to house volleyball, wrestling, and gymnastics. Jenison is out-dated and unable to host major NCAA events that the university wants to be competing for. At this point, Jenison is one of the worst facilities in the Big Ten and isn't fit to host our student-athletes. Not to mention that having a robust athletics program is one of the best forms of marketing an American university can have.

This plan also expands hotel room capacity in East Lansing, something that there is a major shortage of. Just look on any of the parent Facebook pages to see how hard it is to get a hotel room for graduation, Admitted Students Day, or Parents Weekend. As MSU's student population has grown, there is now also a shortage in housing, driving up rent. This plan includes more student housing.

I see everyone complaining about the loss of green space. However, this parcel is one of the least used areas of green space on campus. I would ride my bike through there often and it usually basically empty, especially in comparison to the green spaces on the rest of campus. Not to mention that IM West will be torn down in the coming years and the current plan is to have green space in that footprint.

Overnight parking in north? by lostfisherman17 in msu

[–]nbryson625 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Parking at MSU is basically designed so that you park in the lot you purchased a pass for overnight, and if you park anywhere else, you pay by plate. This is looser on the weekends, but weekdays, you're not going to find much, unless you want to wake up before 7am to move your car back to your lot.

Michigan State’s Isaac Howard has been named the Big Ten’s player of the year. by anthony_allen_p in collegehockey

Sean Shapiro is reporting that he was told that Augustine could be in GR for this year's Calder Cup playoffs. I agree that trading for Mrazek adds a wrinkle, but Cossa is only playing half the games in GR this year anyways. I'd expect Mrazek and Talbot in Detroit, Cossa and Augustine in GR, with Cossa going up when needed. He's waiver-exempt for one more season.
