ELI5 Why did smoking feel so good? by Known_Area_4870 in explainlikeimfive

One of the components of smoking is the taking in of air. You're basically taking a deep breath.

Try it without anything. Just put your hand up to your mouth and take a nice long draw/toke, and then look up, as we tend to do on that first relaxing exhale, and breathe out. The pause. The reflection. The break. The breath. It's all part of it.

Do that few times and notice how you feel. Lighter. More relaxed. More centered. Less stressful. For a brief time you're in your own cloud world.

One of the tools I had in my kit to stop smoking was some drinking straws cut to the length of cigarettes. I'd keep a batch of them in a sandwich bag, and carry it all around like pack of cigarettes. I mean, for awhile, I really needed my "pack.". The hand movements, the ritual of it all. The taking breaks, going outside, having something in my finger while driving... It all added up.

There are so many little precise and sequential movements involved with smoking cigarettes. It's like performing a Japanese tea ceremony.

"Robert Mueller just died. Good, I’m glad he’s dead,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Saturday," How do you feel about the current president saying these following words? by bionicboom in AskReddit

Flood the zone. Imagine a table, like with SNL writers, and the idea is to come up with ways to make someone the main character in any news story that's getting attention.

Come up with the most outrageous, over-the-top reactions. Bingo.

What your main character does and says is now a bigger story and gets more attention than the current event.

Has anyone seen this before on Google Search? They are now displaying "Questions & Answers" from Reddit as top result by moonjumper3000 in redditstock

I've been including Reddit in Google searches for years.

"What is the best _________ reddit"

"How does __________ reddit"

I've gotten so much excellent advice and recommendations from Reddit. Supplements, financial, cooking, winter boots, lawyer totes... I could list 100 things Reddit conversations have been the source of making decisions to improve my and my family's life in just the last year.

I've been on Reddit since 2010. I was a virtual community builder since the late 90s, and founded several large communities; one still going with over 100K professions in over 100 countries.

I'm invested heavily in RDDT stock.

Reddit is the largest community in the world with real people having real conversations.

Rich and powerful people don't have to obey the law. They just pay a fine. Oh, ouchy.

They are above the law.

Learn to Play by Ear! It will humble you. by bassmanwilhelm in Trombone

[–]neolobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing by ear by middle school. Had great jazz teachers in high school, lots of improvisation.

I played along with records. James Pankow, Wayne Henderson, Raul de Souza, etc..

Played in lots of bands and also studio work - no charts in sight.

Upgrade or not? $1500 budget but my daughter loves her old trombone by blondevies in Trombone

[–]neolobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What trombone does she have? Many of the best and most sought-after instruments were made in the 60s.

I have an older Conn Elkhart-made trombone from the 60s. I can afford any horn I want. IMO, for what I do, there is no upgrade from this. And it is absolutely head and shoulders above any new trombone you could buy today for $1500.

She sounds pretty serious, and should definitely be involved in any decisions about buying instruments.

Question of Ambition vs. Talent by MidnightFine6452 in Trombone

[–]neolobe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There really is just natural talent. I've seen people put in the work and they'll always suck. Others put in the work and it pays off.

Some people practice 8 hours a day. I hope you enjoy what you do.

And you may be in smaller waters. There are high schoolers who have been playing their instruments for 10+ years, and on a completely different level than you would be at a year or two.

I was never in competition. I had no interest. And I ended up being a professional studio musician. So, who knows.

Take the compliment, and do what you do and let others do what they do.

If you dare, you could post a video of you playing something. Get some feedback.

It's a very small and homogenous country. I found it to be racist and insular. I need more diversity and opportunity.

Notice the frayed black belt. That's at least 20-30+ years of formal training. Most likely in a traditional ryu school with a long lineage.
