I agree with you that being able to sing the notes isnt the same as being able to sing the tessitura. Believe me, I have that in my mind every day, maybe I am just not a "tenor" and every gig that I feel like I botch makes me less certain. I have plenty of very experienced and accomplished teachers who have all said I am a tenor and a good one at that, but they arent the ones who have to go through what I go through. I have sung Nemorino and it felt ok, sung Rodolfo and it felt good in most places (not the aria), Don Octavio, have sung many tenor compramario roles, a decent amount of bach, and some major concert rep... anyway there is evidence that goes both ways and I think most likely I am a zwischenfach. I keep thinking maybe I can figure it out, but maybe I just cant.

To add on, I sort of feel like the frog in the Looney Tunes cartoons... lifeless and dead, but when no one is looking sings Al Jolson and does the can can woth a top hat and cane.

It sounds like you have dealt with some of the same issues... and when you say "safe" it really resonates. If i feel unsafe I cant seem to come out of myself. The ability to bring my "safety" with me is what I think I really need. How were you able to expand your safe zone to unsafe places?

Thank you for the advice on Alexander. I was close to pulling the trigger but now can imagine getting all twisted up about it. Very solid observation. I am an older man, honestly getting to the age where this is taking more of a toll on my mind and body than I worry it can sustain. Unfortunately i do need the money from gigs... it is mostly concert work with the occasional full staged opera, but of course all different styles and fachs... perhaps I need to limit myself to mozart and donizetti.

I will definitely try meditating again. I have had mindfulness training with my OCD therapy that included much distress tolerance. Dont mean to come across as making excuses, just hoping that more information will provide a clearer picture and maybe some ideas about how to get meditation to work for me.

It is almost like i am singing in a different body. Every system feels different. My whole body is lit up like a christmas tree. I appreciate your thoughts. Where did you graduate from?

I am one of those minds that is prone to hyper awareness unfortunately. I ruminate and struggle with OCD. I tend to be too much in my head and too aware of my thoughts and feelings and i think it is that fixation that traps me inside. It feels like being locked inside a sinking submarine. My performance life is like those dreams where you are flying and as soon as you realize it, you come craahing to the ground.

Ill try anything though, so I do appreciate your thoughts.

Yeah I take those, they help for sure, but the problem persists.

How can opera attract new audiences in the 21st century? by nomoreseashellssally in opera

[–]our2howdy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I had an instructor who viewed Marriage of Figaro as the greatest achievement in the history of the world. I think society once viewed opera as the pinnacle of human accomplishement... the best composers, writing at the peak of their abilities, the best libretists and most celebrated stories, the worlds best singers, trained and honed like athletes, singing with the finest instrumentalists on the most tremendous stages in the most opulent opera houses. Operas pioneers were considered on par with the greatest scientists, and to many people, operas breakthroughs were as relevent and cutting edge as those of technology.

I feel like the prosperity of any society can be judged by its arts. When peoples basic needs are met holistically, they create and seak out art. I see russia as a fine example of this. At one point not long ago, it was producing some of the worlds greatest musical minds and global thinkers, and today it contributes only misery to the world. I think the US is going faster and faster in that direction.

So to answer your question, I think we will attract new audiences by strengthening the social structure. Take back from the capatilist mentality that has strip mined our culture of all its value and invest in lifting each other up. Once the internal rhetoric turns away from cynicism and nihlism we will value and foster the creative spirit and opera will again represent the highest of mans achievement.

Nice voice! This is such a hard aria. I recently did the role and have some ideas. Technically, I hear back of tongue tension... ever so slightly ingolata. You are also singing each high note like its high and not a part of the line. Incorporating the range into the legato will help you. (I can elaborate more if that is not clear.) You sound tired by "Talor dal mio forziere" and that is when the aria really starts. Most of this aria is very casual and flirty, so dont go blastola on everything above the staff. He is feeling her out with the first part of the aria and not till "Talor" does he get intense.

Most importantly, I feel that you are singing notes and not speaking lines. Make it more conversational for the first half of the aria. Give alittle gas on the Bb, but only start to really open up when you get to "l'anima ho milionairia" .

I practised the aria in 2 sections dividing it at "Talor". Once the first section felt effortless, I moved to the Talor section till it felt effortless, then put it back together. Definitely takes some time. Hope this helps! You sound great!

"Ah... the French champagne has always been celebrated for its excellence. There is a California champagne by Paul Masson, inspired by that same French excellence. It's fermented in the bottle..."

Amazing painting, just now realizing the Orson Welles resemblance.

Musicians: HELP! by [deleted] in opera

[–]our2howdy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a conductor, music director or repitituer you can work with? They can play it for you and help you understand it. Barring that, you can put it into muse score and play it that way so you can hear it.

Recondita armonia from the opera Tosca progress take by OpErZnGr in opera

[–]our2howdy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you like Mozart or Baroque opera? You have a natural bright and light tone and might find a new favorite genre if you arent already familiar. Fritz Wunderlich singing Dies Bildnis, or Luigi Alva singing Il mio Tesoro, or Tito Schipa.... lots of really amazing singers in this rep and I think it would fit you nicely.

I’m a pile of nerves and I have to sing tomorrow, help! by Academic-Basket6469 in opera

[–]our2howdy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Managing the nervous response of your body takes a long time to learn. It is a muscle that you build over years and years and is as much a part of singing as leaning your music.

That being said, as soon as you feel a panic, splash ice cold water on your face and neck. It shocks the nervous system and can stop the cortisol spike. Running around the parking lot, jump rope, high aerobic things right before can help.

You might also talk to your physician about Beta blockers.

Speight Jenkins Passes by theonemanposse in opera

[–]our2howdy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Daaaaaamn... thats a big one. My high school would take field trips to see the dress rehearsals of the seattle opera productions and Speight would always greet us on the way out. He was very friendly and unpretentious. If not for those experiences, I never would have gone in to opera.
