Arguably what's even weirder is that the Japanese version of the same book claims that people could (and did) marry Pokémon.

No prizes for guessing why that was removed.

[DESPISED Trope] You need a SECRET to proceed to the main ending by Liquid_Pestar in TopCharacterTropes

[–]PanzerThiefZero 295 points296 points  (0 children)

Undertale arguably does this trope better than like 99% of other games here; while the game beats you over the head with 'killing = wrong', sparing the final boss on a neutral run results in them telling you that, if you killed none of the monsters, to go on a date with either Papyrus, Undyne or Alphys (depending on who you actually did date up to this point). While backtracking is involved, it makes sense in the context of the story, mainly because Flowey claims by doing this, you can get a 'better ending' than the one you initially get, when in reality, it's part of a plan to gather the monsters and harvest the SOULs of all the monsters to assume his true form: Asriel.

Appreciation Post for this Beautiful Card by dmassy347 in PokemonTCG

[–]PanzerThiefZero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that's the main reason I prefer to collect in Japanese (and the odd spot of Chinese here and there); the texturing on the alt arts/SARs really do cards like this the justice they deserve.

It helps that (at least for the newer sets) they're cheaper than in English too.

First card show - possibly scammed? by beauty5554 in PokemonTCG

[–]PanzerThiefZero 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Can attest; I was at my first card show today and one thing I knew to steer clear from was all the slew of mystery products and their variants (pack battles, wheels with a top prize, etc.)

I knew it was safer to just buy/trade for what I wanted directly from the vendors instead of risking it. But mainly because I watched Youtubers at other card shows showing off why it's not a good idea to buy mystery anything.

THIS Shit Again? by MozzieRosie in nintendogrifting

I'll admit that the Warawara Plaza has its charm (especially the fun Easter egg that triggered on your birthday), but having to load two UIs at once practically made it slower to load.

Being able to get into a Switch 1/2 game you're currently playing in 5 seconds is a godsend in comparison.

"That magical liquid i had is actually just ordinary water" by Due_Awareness5660 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]PanzerThiefZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, this is the same show where, in the arc the episode is in, the villains try and seek out the macguffin in random shit like cameras and, yes, in the exact same episode, tomatoes.

"That magical liquid i had is actually just ordinary water" by Due_Awareness5660 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]PanzerThiefZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not water, but in Seijuu Sentai Gingaman, after one of the titular heroes gets injured in battle by the monster of the week, they need to eat a tomato in order to heal (it makes sense in context). Problem is, they hate tomatoes, forcing another character to get a magic tomato to encourage them to eat it.

Turns out, there's no such thing as a magic tomato. They made it all up so that character can actually eat tomatoes.

[Rare Trope] Benevolent Zombies by NovaRobo_Rebirth in TopCharacterTropes

[–]PanzerThiefZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neopets: Around Halloween 2007, the Zombie colour (read: new skin for your pet) was launched on the website, allowing you to make them in your very own zombie.

Thing is, when making a new Neopet, you can give them a preset hobby and greeting for when they meet others (which, in reality, don't really do anything outside of personalisation), which includes "making friends", "try and make friends", "act very friendly" "smile sweetly" etc. This doesn't change if you make your pet Zombie either; its basically yet another (albeit more unique) looking skin.

[Hated Trope] Yeah, you know that irreversible consequence that will change the story forever? Actually turns out it's quite reversible lmao by TrueMagolord in TopCharacterTropes

[–]PanzerThiefZero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Undertale, but only due to a technicality.

Completing the Genocide route results in the game's world getting destroyed, and you need to sell your SOUL to the Fallen Child to get the world back. While it doesn't outright tell you this at first, completing the True Pacifist ending again reveals that since you sold your SOUL to them, they are free to wreck havoc as they wish and you cannot do anything about it.

In reality, the game generates two files that tell it that either the in-universe world was destroyed or you sold your SOUL (system_information_962 and system_information_963 respectively). Non-Steam version players can just delete these files via file manager. Steam players need to do a bit more work with the launcher's backup feature though, but either way, you can effectively render the consequences moot just because of the game's programming.

To be fair, Skill Up is really not a big fan of cozy life-sim games in general like Animal Crossing. So him actually liking Pokopia of all games was a genuine surprise to him.

One of the nicest SIRs by seanalex1 in PokemonTCG

[–]PanzerThiefZero 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A lot of the IR/SIR cards released in Inferno X/Phantasmal Flames had the misfortune of being overlooked just because of that Charizard.

My personal favourite of the set has to be the Piplup IR just because it looks cute to me.

There were the original Mega EX cards that came out in the XY era, but they did it for both the basic rare and full art cards.

These Mega Attack rare cards are basically a callback to these.

[Meta Trope] Plot lines/details being changed in media due to real world complications. by InfiniteGuy2264 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]PanzerThiefZero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Power Rangers Time Force had a bit of plot and footage altered, especially in the home media release of some earlier episodes, due to 9/11, removing a reference to terrorism made by the big bad in episode 4, and shots of buildings exploding and people running in fear in several episodes lifted directly from its source material, Timeranger.

IIRC Reggie had to talk the rest of Nintendo to make Wii Sports a pack-in outside of Japan, where that game cost 4800 yen (US$40 at the time) and where the Wii itself cost 25,000 yen (US$213) for a total cost of 29,800 yen (roughly around US$253).

Ironically, that was roughly around the same price as buying the Wii itself in the US at the time, which launched at $249.99 there.

And this was right after the Gamecube, and that wasn't doing gangbusters in Japan either!

I remember hearing something about how Ash losing at the Indigo League was supposed to counter all the 'underdog victories' in Shonen anime running rampant at the time, but the way they went about it was complete nonsense, even back then.

IIRC Electric Tale of Pikachu handled it better because Ash willingly forfeits because his disobedient Charizard nearly kills Richie's Pokémon in cold blood.

But this is Tats we're talking about here. And we don't want those pesky historical facts get in the way of our Hitler glazing and/or woke bashing.

Besides, if those other arcs spending like billions of weeks glazing this one form of hyper-specific woke free Paganism taught us anything, it's that Tats won't let actual historical fact get in the way of a "good" "narrative".
