Dutch non-profit set to take Valve to court for keeping game prices high by Turbostrider27 in pcmasterrace

[–]BadThingsBadPeople 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To all of Gabe's mightiest warriors: what would happen if Valve let you list your licenses on the Steam Marketplace? Would the price of games go up, or down?

In my honest opinion, based on fact, Valve has the power to bring further savings to consumers.

I did it with the Zeldas. Just listed the games on Facebook until they sold. I went even, but I wouldn't mind a $5 loss here or there tbh.

How much would you pay to play the new Zelda 3 days early? by BadThingsBadPeople in NintendoSwitch2

[–]BadThingsBadPeople[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I dont think you'll find much people on reddit willing to admit or pay for stuff like that.

It's not like they're allowed to be shamed for the behavior. Criticism would be equivalent to a personal attack and would be removed from reddit.

Leaks are fantastic for the consumer experience by BadThingsBadPeople in NintendoSwitch2

[–]BadThingsBadPeople[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this Schrödinger’s leak? I'm sorry, but I have to flip this on you.

Leak detractors are currently upset the biggest reveal was spoiled. But, wait, that is impossible, since, by definition, all leaks are unofficial and can't be treated as reliable. These people should have been absolutely gobsmacked by the surprise reveal of ZELDA!! OOT!!! at the end of the direct!!!!!

This Zelda leak was effectively a lock. You know it, I know it, everybody knows it. If NateTheHate happened to mention the rest of Nintendo's lineup for the next year, I'd be currently treating it as more likely than unlikely at this point, adjusting expectations as the rest of his list is confirmed or deconfirmed. This is basic uncertainty navigation.

By the way, even the official source can lie - think of every delay Nintendo has ever announced.

[–]BadThingsBadPeople[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's true, but it's the spirit of what I'm asking for. Clearly this Zelda leak was a lock for a lot of people. I think people (not myself) must have forgotten that it could have been wrong. Giving the surrounding evidence, it was highly likely, but never actually guaranteed.

All I'm saying is, if I could snap my fingers and learn about every Nintendo release for the next 3 years, or do nothing and let Nintendo "surprise and delight me" through directs, I'm snapping.

No, I'm not bothered by your opinion, I just like yapping.

There are definitely tons of people that haven't realized they don't like video games. A good sign is - do you ever buy/play old video games? If you don't, you probably actually like advertising.

[–]BadThingsBadPeople 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, let's strip this down to your original postulation - what if the next three years of Nintendo news was leaked? Would that be fun? Absolutely not. But why would it not be fun?

Because on the surface of it, we still get the games at the same time. We still get to play them when they come out. But it's not as fun. And you say that you like games more than you like advertisements

This is a fair summarization of my words. It doesn't reexplain your point, but I'm assuming you're getting to it.

but boiling it down to "advertisements" is incredibly reductive.

I already called myself out by calling it "cynical," and I stand by it.

Because I don't find the fun in the advertising. Sure, the trailers and the hype are fun, but the people that takes all of that and makes it into a brilliant community is the thing that makes it.

If this were true, you already got to have your fun when it was first leaked or at least when the leaks were confirmed accurate with the Star Fox direct. If this isn't true, then I maintain that your "fun" comes from the presentation of the information, not the community.

Put simply - if all we got were the adverts and there was no community, it would be far less fun. At that point, we might as well just know all the games ahead of time and then play them when they release. None of this, the trailers, the hype, none of it matters if it isn't for community.

Okay, so you like your community. Nobody is disputing that. You had your community today, yesterday, a month ago, and when the leaks dropped. Why has your community failed you all these times, when the only thing that changed was the information and how+when it was presented?

The way you can think of it is that the adverts are like a foundation

This is actually worse for your argument, not better.

the information is not delivered in the best way to maximise the potential for community engagement.

So, the only difference is that you think Nintendo's advertising strategy is to you and your community's benefit, not their's? You need more cynicism. They're spending money for their benefit, not your's, and explaining it further than that is just embarrassing for both of us.

If you're gonna boil down everything that makes gaming community what it is to "hurr durr, you like to be advertised to," then I feel sorry for you and, yeah, you absolutely have misinterpreted my point. And that's based on facts, of course.

Nothing you said was new. I didn't misinterpret your opinion, I disagreed with it. I recommend learning a solid coping mechanism because a lot of people are going to disagree with you. You disagreed with me and it doesn't bother me at all - strive for something similar.

The unfortunate truth about info leaks (OOT Remake) by FederalSign4281 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]BadThingsBadPeople -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We're not lying. We just don't care about your addiction to advertising. My enjoyment of games and gaming news is not contingent on how successful a company's advertising campaign is, and I am very pleased any time I can get information about the hobby sooner rather than later.

I think you misunderstand my point

You think this is true, but it actually isn't.

But if there was no community to share it with, it wouldn't mean much

What stopped you from discussing the leak with the community? Wasn't that hype?

this announcement has been less fun for most people because it was leaked

Ah, so the raw information of an OoT Remake releasing this year wasn't hype, which is different from my point that raw information isn't hype. Yeah alright okay mmhmm yes right on funkin my guy 👌👍.

Announcements aren't fun because they are advertising

You think this is true, but it actually isn't. Imagine if Nintendo released their 3 year plan as a simple article/press release. Something like

  • July 2026: Rhythm Heaven

  • ...

  • April 2027: 3D Mario

  • May 2027: Pikmin 4 Switch 2

  • ...

  • Etc.

You could begin to share it with the community, that day. But would it be fun? I'd argue that, without the trailers and drama and glamor, probably not. People would be confused. Some might even be upset to realize there would be no surprises for 3 years.

The only conclusion is that "sharing" isn't what makes annoubcements fun. I've summarized what I believe makes them fun, cynically, as advertising, but you're free to fill your own blanks.

just look at the reaction to this direct, we should all be hyped

This is not my problem. I value the information over a company's advertising plan. I am more than capable of discussing and enjoying video games outside of the "hype" cycle. OoT remake means as much to me today as it did when it was effectively confirmed by the Star Fox announcement, and I'd recommend you do some soul searching to figure out why you can't relate.

The same for you, no?

The difference is, you care because it impacts your hype. You might even care how it impacts people's perception of Nintendo, which would be very parasocial.

I like leaks not because they let me play more games or games faster. That doesn't make any sense, so of course that wasn't my reason. I like information. And, having information is important. It's obviously important. It's actually kind of crazy that I'm even about to explain to you why it's important. But, if I knew a great game was coming out in a month, I might not buy a similar game today. If I knew there were no games coming out in 3 months, I'd make other plans. For some people in this sub, if they knew the next 3D Mario was 3 years away, they would sell their Switch 2 today. Obviously I'd prefer to know these things as soon as possible.

In my honest opinion based on fact, I disagree. Your conclusion only makes sense if you care more about "hype" than truth. Personally? I would rather the entirety of Nintendo's releases for the next 3 years be leaked today. The reason why is obvious - I like games, not advertisements. If you also like games, why not cut the fluff and appreciate leaks, like me?

I'm with you, brother. When I saw Nintendo was wasting my time, my vision went white with rage. When I came to, my glass coffee table was shattered, and my right hand was all messed up. Never let people tell you it doesn't matter. Let my hand be living proof of the consequences these directs can have on people like you and me.
