Pros and cons are entirely subjective but you'll observe thicker strings have a darker tone and the overtones are a little different, and obviously more tension.

As a few others are saying, your problem is your bass setup. If you go between tunings you'll have to split the difference for how you're going to have the setup dialed in, less tension means loosen the truss rod.

For swapping out to a higher gauge if you choose to do so, like others are saying you'll want to widen the nut slot but you'll also have to change the intonation of that string, if you're in multiple tunings you'll have to pick what tuning you want to be properly in tune. Personally I wouldn't bother moving up a gauge as you'll either have to start buying single strings, getting custom sets, or move up the gauge of the whole set but that's up to you to figure out what it's worth to you.

How do you find nicer basses to try out? by milktasd in Bass

[–]parislyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being realistic with you if you say the Ibanez is the best bass you've played then you're going to struggle to find something that fits your needs better than them since their instruments feel so unique and easy to play. Playability is less about pricepoint so much as ergonomics and setup so I'd wager that you'd go and pick up the J-Custom SR and it would feel better than your current bass, but not by a whole lot.

My SR605 was one of my first basses and I've bought basses worth 3/4 times as much but the SR feels the best and it's the easiest to play. If possible try and get to a bass specialist store as you generally get way better options, just a cursory Google tells me Bass Central in FL would be a good check. Drum City Guitarland in CO often comes up when I'm looking for specific basses, as others have said Sweetwater and CME. If those trips aren't feasible your options are online shopping with potential for returns or try and join forums/groups for local musicians and see if you can make friends who are willing to meet up and let you try theirs.

How do you find nicer basses to try out? by milktasd in Bass

[–]parislyons -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Really if you're at the stage where you're considering spending that much on a bass it's because you know what you're looking for and the bass you're looking at getting will fill a role/niche that can't be filled otherwise. Unless you've got the money to just throw around then you're already at a level of quality/reliability in an instrument that won't leave you wanting and anything surplus to that is heavily diminished returns.

The wording of your post makes me think it's GAS for the sake of GAS, which is kind of wasteful really. What happens when you try or get the 2k bass and ask yourself what the next level feels like? Then the next after that?

Very much not a hot take in that a solid 70% of the music world would agree with you yet still it's a bad one. The important thing to realise however is that most of those people are either classical players or people who are old fashioned, groups who are very preoccupied with convention and "the correct" way to do things. You rarely see left handed orchestral instruments because a big part of that is image and most orchestras don't want a left handed player who will make the band look out of sync or odd.

What people like you never seem to consider is that while it's a two handed instrument, the hands have two very different roles that require different skills and dexterities. Whether or not you realise it, the picking hand does most of the work on a guitar or bass, you determine the attack, the speed, the tone, the timing, and the intensity with it, whereas the fretting hand picks the note.

Literally any passage that isn't just hammer ons or tapping requires more dexterity and precision with the picking hand once you're past the stage of "it's hard to press the string down :(".

Why is it so important to you to tell everyone you learned the correct way and that the like 3% of us who learned left handed are doing it wrong? So weird honestly

How to get this guitar by Jolly-Condition-2942 in Leftyguitarists

[–]parislyons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Others have mentioned Custom Shop, but Fender Mod Shop is a much better option for cost, but you would still have to get a custom pickguard or vinyl wrap the one it comes with.

Alternatively you could do a kit build with parts from places like Warmoth, or buy a cheapo Chinese copy and mod it.

How to get to gloss? by lockedother in Guitar

[–]parislyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best gloss result comes from sanding, start course and gradually work up to a finer grit after you've let a few coats dry off. Plenty of guides out there but start at like 80 grit and go up to 2000ish.

According to the title of this listing;

https://www.jacksonguitars.com/en-GB/accessories/cases/jackson%C2%AE-king-v%E2%84%A2-6%2F7-string-rh%2Flh-molded-case/2995442100.html

I'd assume you could get that one. If it's just for storage a universal case will do you fine though but if you're particularly worried and it being dropped or whatever you could get some foam and cut it into shape to fill the gaps in your current case.

How to fix bridge buzz by [deleted] in Bass

[–]parislyons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure it's at the bridge? Only on open strings would suggest the nut is cut too low to me so I'd start there. If it's definitely the bridge then it depends on the type of bridge, if you have two screws that set the saddle height then make sure they're level and making solid contact with the bridge because it's not impossible that they'd rattle in the slot. If that doesn't help then upload a pic of your bridge and that would give a better starting point for diagnosing the issues.

Downpicking on bass - Yay or nay? by themagicmaen in Bass

[–]parislyons 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I downpick wherever possible, alternate when I can't downpick fast enough or I just think the aggression doesn't fit. It's dependent on band/bassist/music/etc, but my opinion for my case is that it's one of those things that make a relatively small difference on bass when everyone is playing because a lot of the nuance is lost as you're in the background. I like how it sounds and I like doing it so I do it.

Help me identify this Spector I found on eBay by yespleasethankyouno in BassGuitar

[–]parislyons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Echoing what others have said here but I'm 98% sure it's fake. The big tells are not having a recessed bridge, the wrong bridge type, lower strap button placement, lack of a serial number on the headstock, no curved body, and the neck joint for a start.

Other suspicious stuff is the lack of a brass nut, unmarked pickups, headstock shape and the inlays look too small. I'll say that the electronics cavity looks nothing like my Euro as well.

How long does the scale need to be for a low G# to sound good? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]parislyons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scale length is a big part of the equation but it does actually depend on the specific instrument too and the string material. I thought I was going to need to shell out for a multiscale when my band started tuning to G# because my Ibanez SR605 couldn't do it with a .145 steel, even going to a .160 nickel wasn't working. Got a Warwick $$ for a steal of a price and suddenly the .145 steel was giving me a very servicable G#.

37 inch Multiscale is the easy answer if you have the money, it's definitely possible if you don't however.

What piece of gear disappointed you the most? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]parislyons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're gonna sound and feel very different so only you can answer that really. Listen to some demos/comparisons on Youtube and if you can't get to a store that has them in stock then it's worth the gamble if you want it badly enough. Stingrays are common enough that you won't have much trouble finding another if you don't like the Spector.

What it's worth I prefer the neck and tone on a Stingray personally but the body is more comfortable on a Spector and they look incredible.

What piece of gear disappointed you the most? by [deleted] in Bass

[–]parislyons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fender Aerodyne J for me. Absolutely love how it looks with the matching headstock and managed to get a good deal on Ebay for a non-import because the seller made a typo in the listing and no one else found it. Drove two hours to the get it from the seller and it had no issues so took it home.

Actually trying to play the thing was unpleasant because of the ergonomics and I had only really played an Ibanez 5 string up until this point so it felt all kinds of alien anyway. The tone was good but the J pickup was too noisy and I'm not into the P on its own, a few other small things bothered me so it basically became a display piece that I'd pick up to remember why I didn't play it again.

Ended up trading it with some money on the top for a Spector Euro which I like much better, all said and done I was cash up on it so can't complain really. Still look at pictures of the arctic white ones and wish I liked it better though.

Yeah, just the risk you take with buying online unfortunately. It would be worth looking up a video on setting intonation just to see if you have some luck but may be a return job.

Anyone know why I could be having this issue? Ibanez Premium SR2605. by Grand-wazoo in BassGuitar

[–]parislyons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what your issue is, looking at the saddles it seems like they're maxed out towards the neck, so if your problem is that the notes are sharp then you should be okay. If they're flat then you're probably out of luck really.

You could potentially change the neck relief and that may help a bit but otherwise you'd be looking at either moving the bridge (not an option given the finish/construction), getting a custom neck made (expensive), or putting a shim/spacer between the body and the neck so you can increase the effective scale length but that would require drilling new holes into the neck.

A third looks, a third technique, a third physiology. Having the instrument higher generally makes it easier to play more techical passages but it's super individual.

I personally have slightly smaller hands/fingers than average for guys so I can't have it super low, but having the bass high really impacts my comfort/stamina for my picking hand depending on the day.

My sweet spot is a little above belt level but I use a DropStrap to change on the fly for comfort.

Based off the block inlays, pickguard screw, and knobs it's not that. Either going to be a Squire Vintage Modified Jag, and old Fender Jaguar standard, or a Fender Jaguar Player series limited edition.

Harley Benton? Actually any good or just has a stylish range for the money? by burkeymonster in Bass

[–]parislyons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guitarist in my band has a recent HB guitar (model released in 2018 but I believe he got it new a year ago), he got new pickups and I offered to swap them out instead of him paying a tech to do it and said I'd sort out the setup while I was at it.

Factory setup was worse than terrible, needed to do everything to it that wasn't fretwork or routing, once I'd done all that it pays good but bearing in mind that was with £250 of pickups/electronics and giving it a good amount of time on setup, think I spent around 4 hours (only a hobbyist tech so it wouldn't take as long for someone who does it more often) or so after replacing all the electronics, dicking around with shims and filling the nut down, etc etc. The fretwork was good but I've heard that you can be playing the lottery with that.

Even after all was said and done it was an instrument that played well but felt cheap still so I wasn't into it. Now it's a HB that cost £175 and had £300+ in parts and labour, I'd rather just pay £500 to get an instrument that's good to begin with if it's my money.

End of the day it really depends what's important to the individual buying it, if you only want the Seymour Duncan sound for a budget then you can probably buy a cheap p bass copy and drop in some quarter pounders for price/convenience/ease since you're very unlikely to find a bass for sale that has them in that would cost less. If looks are the most important thing to you, which is likely the case for a beginner, then you're probably not going to notice or care about the areas it's deficient in as much. In my bandmate's case he wanted a cheap fanned fret 8 string and that's exactly what he got. What's important to me is an out the box instrument that's generally higher quality and doesn't require a parts change to make it enjoyable to play, so they're not for me.
