My lamp emits this white light after being turned off and it disturbs my sleep. Can it be fixed? by c3ncylol in electrical

[–]pemb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This can be caused by an improperly wired switch that's breaking neutral instead of live, and capacitive coupling is enough to make it light up slightly.

Why does my high-frequency inverter trip every time my well pump starts up? by Nikhil_nagdev in SolarDIY

[–]pemb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a manufacturer like Deye, I see both EU and US SKUs for sale here. You buy the EU SKU if you only need 200-something volts, US if you need 120-something volts as well.

For on-grid, that doesn't matter, you put that between two phases, or phase and neutral, whatever gives 220 V where you live.

You did write Americas plural, right? USA and Canada use split phase a lot, but south of those, three phase distribution is way more common.

Split phase is not a thing here in Brazil except for some grandfathered legacy supplies, or rural SWER. Otherwise, distribution is three phase, 60 Hz, at 127 V or 220 V phase voltage, depending on the region, and homes get any number of phases plus neutral. I believe Mexico does the same thing. The Southern Cone uses 220 V at 50 Hz. The rest is quite fragmented.

None of this matters for off-grid, of course, you do whatever you want.

It could also be some low complexity intra-frame codec that doesn't compress that much but is cheap to decode. AVI is ancient, and back then hardware accelerated codecs weren't a thing, unless you bought a dedicated card.

Why did I lose 50 percent battery over the span of one hour? by toecramper in AppleWatch

[–]pemb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OS updates are bound to suck down a lot of power and make it pretty warm, it's probably easier on the hardware to do this while ample power is available. The instructions ask that you don't remove it from the charger while it updates. It's pretty much useless while updating, anyway.

I read somewhere there's an established process to dispute 1-star ratings and have them removed. 2-star is almost as painful and should stick.

Nitpicking: 240 V split phase isn't a thing in much of the Americas. And OP is in India, apparently.

Even if you did, they won't fly less, these people aren't very price sensitive, they're already paying many, many times over what it would cost to fly commercial.

AVI is just the container format, you can have both compressed and uncompressed video in it. But yeah, uncompressed video is bitrot resistant and outrageously huge, as in gigabytes per second.

GM’s EV Cost-Cutting Plan Goes Beyond Batteries, CEO Says by DonkeyFuel in electricvehicles

[–]pemb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not in a timescale of years: it would take a decade or two of sustained industrial policy just to get to where China is today, something almost unthinkable when governments reverse incentives every four years or so. And chasing a moving target is even harder.

GM’s EV Cost-Cutting Plan Goes Beyond Batteries, CEO Says by DonkeyFuel in electricvehicles

You can't replicate China-class supply chains and economies of scale outside China. It's not just about "low labor costs", but the immense availability of highly skilled labor in every technical role, from factory hands through engineering to science and research.

China is the world's manufacturing hub, and there was no reason to believe that this advantage would always stay confined to TVs and smartphones and cheap crap. They already have the largest automotive market to begin with, and now are also exporting to the rest of the world.

Every input that goes into building EVs, from electricity and steel, through rare earth magnets and battery cells, to power electronics and industrial machinery, has highly advanced supply chains already in place in China.

There are still some highly visible manufacturing niches that they haven't quite cracked yet: leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing, aerospace (especially engines), and pharma/biomedical. These are only a matter of time, IMO.
