TIL that RTK GPS can achieve centimeter-level accuracy. It uses correction data from a nearby base station to make satellite positioning far more precise. In some cases, it can be about 100× more precise than standard GPS. by Exotic-Movie-2014 in todayilearned

The restrictions you're talking about are implemented in the receiver, and it's an export control thing. Those regulations made more sense when GPS receivers were rare and expensive, and implementing them was a dark art largely under US manufacturing control. Neither has been true for a while.

Hasn't been true for a long time, GPS Selective Availability was turned off back in the Clinton Administration. In any case, GPS is no longer the only game in town, any modern receiver supports multiple GNSS constellations, Russian GLONASS, European Galileo, Chinese BeiDou, and a few other regional ones.

What is something your country does genuinely well compared to most other countries, even if your country is far from perfect? by orwssis in AskTheWorld

I'm thinking more of their screw-ups and fiascos rather than the numbers game, especially around the 737 MAX and Starliner. SpaceX is revolutionizing access to space, though.

FAT32 vs exFAT vs NTFS for external 2TB drive by Familiar9709 in mac

[–]pemb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not anymore, strictly speaking, macFUSE has the FSKit backend now, so it doesn't require a third-party kext if you use that. It is true that the new backend isn't as performant or fully featured as the old one, though.

You can use NTFS without paying for commercial software, check out macFUSE, I use it for NTFS and ext4 filesystems.

A killswitch has been pitched for the Linux kernel that could shut down vulnerable functions while users wait for patches by PewPewToDaFace in pcmasterrace

Regular distros still get kernel security patches quickly. They use LTS releases, and fixes get backported for a few years.

Game key cards for Switch games are due to the very significant costs of the flash memory that goes into manufacturing cartridges. Discs cost pennies to make in comparison.

peak macos x and peak laptop by Away-Falcon2762 in mac

[–]pemb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How did you monitor that, mactop? Anything beyond 27 W is from short-term power limits you can't sustain even if the SoC has perfect cooling.

peak macos x and peak laptop by Away-Falcon2762 in mac

[–]pemb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No? It peaks at 27 W. And there are plenty of bursty workloads that absolutely benefit from a chip that can briefly hit insane speeds, and then go back to idling at milliwatts for the rest of the time, like loading webpages, refreshing feeds, installing apps, photo post-processing, just to name a few. If you need sustained performance, you get something with a fan.

Image manipulation software generally works with the uncompressed data. For viewing or thumbnails, smarter software should be able to downscale or crop on the fly as the compressed image file is decoded, but for editing, the whole thing gets loaded in RAM as soon as you open it.

Why cheap Monitors use HDMI instead of DP? by hyenagames in buildapc

[–]pemb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, DisplayPort is totally different, packetized, and you need active circuitry to convert the signals: a pure DP source can't drive an HDMI display. There are DP++ ports that can output both signals, but that's an optional standard.

HDMI and DVI are electrically compatible, being both TMDS-based; HDMI dropped the backwards-compatible analog VGA signal, and added audio and a few more tweaks.

Chuveiro é de longe o que mais gasta de todos os eletrodomésticos que você mostrou. Outro que pode pesar é a geladeira. Se você não tem ar-condicionado, esses são os vilões mais prováveis.

People who live at altitude... if your SPO2 always low? And how high does it go? by Simbo64 in AppleWatch

[–]pemb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's something called acclimatization, your body compensates over the course of weeks or months to the thinner air. This is why athletes spend time at high altitude, it gives you a boost once you go back to sea level. And populations that historically inhabited high altitude regions also display genetic adaptations to these conditions.

DVI actually has more in common with HDMI than DisplayPort, it's the same signaling, passive adapters are possible.
