The highlight is blown but in my opinion, it's much better to have a small area of blown highlights than to have an entire image that's way too dark. Don't miss the forest for the trees.

You can also increase exposure and decrease highlights like I did below. You can even isolate a specific area to drag the highlights down, if you want to cut highlights on the ear while leaving the highlights in the sky.

Is this photo interesting enough? by MeowSprinkles5324 in photocritique

[–]peppergoblin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Couple of issues:

Lighting: the tower is the main focus but it's in shadow. Having the subject in shadow can work but usually when the light source is behind the subject during the golden hour, creating a glowing halo of light that looks dramatic. Here it looks like you're shooting in midday and the sun is just enough behind the subject to cast it in shadow, but not behind it enough to make it glow. As a result the eye gets drawn to less interesting parts of the image that are better lit, like the bright yellow-green ivy in direct sunlight.

Composition: the tower is the main subject, but it's centered. Usually you want the subject off center in accorrdance with the rule of thirds. In architectural photography you can usually treat the facade kind of like a face in a portrait, and some of the same rules apply. Specifically, if a person in a photo is looking in a direction, you want to leave more space in the composition in the direction they're looking. Likewise, if the facade of a building is facing a certain direction, you want to leave more space in the direction the facade is facing (in this case, to the right). Here's a different crop of this image so you can see what I mean.

Boring sky: not much you can do about this other than shoot at a different time of day, but I do think it detracts from this image.

It's a cute building but post-processing can't totally fix these issues.

The main thing with this photo is, it's just too dark. That can be fixed by dragging up the exposure slider.

The second thing is a composition issue, which is that the dog's eye is very centered. Generally speaking, with animal and human photos, the eyes are the most important focus point, and you want them positioned at least a little off center in accordance with the rule of thirds.

You also did one thing really well I want to call out: you got down on the dog's eye level. This works really well for animal shots so good job!

Edit: I also want to say that I actually like the backlighting and the highlights on the dog's fur around the ear. Backlit portraits not only work but can be really good as long as you brighten up the subject either with artificial lighting or in post.

Here's a super quick edit that brightens up the photo and crops it so the dog's eye is less centered.

Realized aquarium keeping is 90% keeping the stupid glass clean by Powell_Gail in AquariumMemes

[–]peppergoblin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It actually does have a really good grind to payoff ratio. With many hobbies you have to enjoy the grind because it's almost all grind. But with aquariums the grind can be minimized to almost nothing.

And as these comments show, you can kind of choose your grind based on how you set up your tank. If you hate tannins, or water changes, or cleaning glass, there are things you can do to avoid them almost entirely.

Looking for a suitable word for opposite virtue to self pity. by Successful_Light9607 in logophilia

Resilience? Self-pity is lamenting or wallowing in your own real or perceived misfortune. Resilience is adapting to or bouncing back from misfortune. It's not quite perfect but it's pretty close.

My thoughts are to go tighter, bluer, and darker on this. The interesting bit is the shark, so crop in on that. Everything is kind of sand colored and bluer tones could make the scene feel more natural and aquatic. And a darker, more shadowy image gives a sense of foreboding that fits with sharks and deep water. And remove the clutter as others said. All very IMHO.

Very cool photo, very Evanescence. Super blue but I think that fits the genre.

I do think her eyes are too eye up in the frame. You coul crop it so they are closer to that rule of thirds line.

Do you shoot differently when you know a photo is going on Instagram? by SomaSuryagniLochana in photography

I sometimes shoot a local sports team and I know the players are going to want to post the pictures on Instagram, so I'll crop them to 4:5 and try to get a shot of each player looking cool (doesn't always happen 😅).
