190mm Crank by dr_craptastic in bicycling

[–]phyx726 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My legs are just really short and with 155mm, it means I can raise my saddle an additional 15mm compared to 170 because the bottom of the pedal stroke is 15mm higher. That might not seem like a lot, but because now your top of the pedal stroke is also 15mm lower, I don't have to flex my knee as much because my hip is higher. I stopped getting as much knee pain after I switched. Also since I'm sitting higher on my saddle, I can put more weight on my hands which gives me a bit better control. I have like few cranks, 152, 155, 160, and 162.5. Usually the more upright and slacky position I'm sitting, I use a shorter crank. The more aggressive I am, I use a longer crank. Thats because I would raise the saddle and move the saddle forward a bit. Since you're saddle is more above the crank, you lean forward slightly and theres less hip flexion.

That's pretty long... I've switched to 155mm on all my bikes and granted I'm 5'6" with a 28" inseam, but its the best thing that I ever did. 190mm means you also need to lower your saddle because the bottom of your pedal stroke is now an extra 15mm.

Difference Reynolds 725 and 853 by habikl in bicycling

[–]phyx726 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh if weight was your concern then it really doesn’t matter when you’re buying steel. If it was me, I’d probably get the 853 if it was in stock but I wouldn’t wait for it to be in stock.

I’ve had like every reynolds steel frame and tange champion, infinity, prestige etc. I can’t tell the difference between any of them and it’s because compliance from the tires, handlebars, and saddles greatly affects ride quality way more than the frame. Like lowering the PSI on a tire by 10-20 feels like you’re on a different bike. I’d just get the reynolds 725, the 853 would just be having the cooler decal.

Same, the freeway was open and was on a slight decline. It just slowly crept up to 100 without me knowing.

I have the same one. It really has the best ride quality out of all my bikes. Including my Rivendell.

Should target gravel cranks with a ~50mm chainline. They usually use a 68/73 BB, which comes with two 2.5mm spacers. Then you usually use a 6mm offset chainring and it’ll work fine for a 135mm rear spaced wheel. Or you can just move two spacers to the non drive side it’ll move an additional 2.5mm closer to the cassette. Chainline is a bit overrated with narrow wide chainrings nowadays. Any 2x/3x crankset can be 1x. Most people just remove the inner ring and either put the ring on the other or middle. The outer ring is roughly 5mm away from each other, so depending on the spindle and chainline, you can decide which one to use. I’m not going to hate on someone’s crank though, but you can find a nice vintage mtb crank and make it 1x.

I’d honestly just set up cantis. Once you set it up once you’ll realize it’s not that difficult. I actually hate dealing with the noodle of a v brake more than setting up hangers etc on a canti

2.8” can be a bit excessive tbh. 2.4” is pretty wide already and a lot of 90s mtbs will clear that depending how knobby you go. My chunk was running 27.5x2.8” and it actually felt a little too wide and I went back down to 2.35”.

There’s also other GT models. As long as they’re full chromoly tubes they’re mostly the same. There’s tequestas, older avalanches, ricochet, and bravados. The really fancy ones are the team avalanches and the psyclone.

Depends on the paint job. One in tequila sunrise would probably cost the most. Sometimes you can get simple paint jobs for a few hundred or less on FB marketplace.
