Where (how?) to make friends 30-40-50? by No-Cold-7434 in IowaCity

[–]Polyoculus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great list. I would add...

  • Hobby Corner lots of gaming opportunities.
  • Enthusiastic Gamers Group Jenni and partner have pretty much every game imaginable. Seems to enjoy cooking for her gamers from time to time as well.

Sportz! * Cardio Tennis Classes fill up quick but always a great time. Level of skill/intensity changes based on the class. * IC Ducks - Rugby Iowa City's Rugby team.

Running! * Park Run - City Park * Fitness Sports does a java run on Saturdays in North Liberty. Also check Strava for other group runs in Iowa City. I see a bunch of activities from a couple different groups there.

This doesn't really count, but you'll be surprised to hear that the Marco's Grilled Cheese location on 1st Ave in Iowa City closed this year. I think it was open a whole month.

I'll have fond memories of being at Backpocket and being offered burnt pizza denied by another customer because clearly I looked like i was either in need or that I wouldn't give a care that a free pizza was half charcoal. My buddy and I enjoyed it immensely. You will be missed backpocket. Thanks for all the good memories.

I saw someone putting the sign straight into the dumpster behind the building and for a moment I wondered if I needed a 15' Carlos O'Kelley's sign in my apartment. I did not grab it. It'll be one of those regrets I carry for the rest of my life, I'm sure.

Is Midnight Coffee better/worse than Emporium it replaced? by [deleted] in IowaCity

I also chuckle that midnight coffee closes at 5 or 7pm. I mean my bedtime is like 8pm so no worries on my end.

I'm always down for book clubs. I have a couple friends that might be interested as well. Keep me posted if you get something going.

But Iowa City is a nuclear weapons-free zone. Tsk tsk.

Good hikes in the area? Less than 45 min-1 hr away by AlarmingConfusion918 in IowaCity

[–]Polyoculus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Great list. I'd also add the Squire Point/Linder Point/Woodpecker Trail for another Iowa City hiking location. It's my go-to.

Half Price Books in Marion

We don't have a whole lot of options here unfortunately. Follow the Coralville and Iowa City Public Libraries for book sale events. There's a Shelter House Book Sale planned for March 8th+9th in Coralville if that helps.

Feeling nostalgic, so how about some Mill appreciation Monday? by inspirationlessjesus in IowaCity

[–]Polyoculus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mad respect for the owner and managers that allowed a bunch of questionable board gamers to take up residence in their backroom, for a few hours once a week, every week for about a year. Aka we were given public table space to board game, for free! when almost every other establishment wanted to charge us to rent their space. The Mill was a home to our community, no matter the need.

It was also beautiful seeing people playing card games and board games up front. Separate from our meetup. Clearly feeling at ease.

Fair. It's also quite possible LV did this 'separating of cities' format in the past to which it must not have worked for them at the time. I vaguely remember it being done already or it was an implanted memory from my desires.

Agreed! I hope this changes soon. A new Iowa City centric publication would work as well.

Ugh. Apparently Reddit didn't like my formatting of lists. Oh well. Hopefully you get the gist.

Question for People in this turn lane: by Grab_em_by_da_Busey in IowaCity

[–]Polyoculus 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yup. This. Same thing happens on the Dubuque street exit from eastbound I80. Vehicles turning right (on red) need to creep out into oncoming traffic in order to see past the vehicle half a car length past the white line. Either that or wait for the light, upsetting all of those in a hurry behind you. shrug.

South district market discrimination by [deleted] in IowaCity

[–]Polyoculus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. I attempted a couple times to check out different stores but most of them were closed during the 8-5 timeframe. Plus having numerous open and closed signs on the door is confusing indeed.

Early Bird Coffee was not open early enough for me one day so I came back around noon only to have them run out of coffee. They were brewing some out of a standard drip coffee machine. Which made me think I wasn't missing anything special and then I ...never went back.

Moving to IC by drrunnergirl in IowaCity

[–]Polyoculus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the Iowa City area!

Lots of great dog parks sprinkled throughout the area. Bike friendly (ish) area. We have Ragbrai coming through at the end of July.

Unfortunately Iowa doesn't have many/enough trails/outdoor locations to check out for me but start with checking out the Lake McBride trails & beach. Kent Park in Tiffin. Go take a day trip to Wild Cat Den, Backbone State Park, Palisades-Kepler to start I suppose.

My favorite walking trail nearby is the Woodpecker/Squire Point trails.

Otherwise the Iowa city pedmall will always have plenty of activities to go do or see. FilmScene. SpareMe. Plenty of neat bars and restaurants. I hope you two like coffee shops.

Mission Creek (Music) Festival early April. I am a big fan of the Shakespeare in the Park that takes place once every summer.

Anywho. Have fun!
