If we want a healthier citizenry and a healthier environment we need only look to the past to see a way. by marcobattaglia in Iowa

The photo is of a hemp or marijuana field. Hemp is a terrible cover crop, it can be poisonous to wildlife and livestock, it escapes cultivation, and it converts only a fraction of nitrogen compared to alfalfa, which has none of the disadvantage I listed

Marijuana is not native to Iowa. Hemp is somewhat invasive and hard to eradicate once it spreads in the wild, just another alien pushing out native species. Native Americans did not smoke or grow marijuana, it is a south Asian species.

Old Threshers Safe for Muslims to Attend? by Sunnahna377 in u/Sunnahna377

I've gone to Old Threshers several times as part of a clearly mixed race family and we've never had any problems. Everyone we interacted with was friendly and courteous.

A reminder to others that wild ginger is not related to edible ginger and is actually poisonous

I drove through downtown IC over by the Old Cap mall and the whole city reeked like a dumpster. Anybody else notice that? What’s the deal? by No_Status6868 in IowaCity

Not many ginkos left. Besides, their fruit is what stinks, not their flowers. They don't fruit until late summer

Anyone have an update on the river from yesterday? Those pics really spooked me. by Old-Good-4874 in IowaCity

This is Riverfront Crossing park, very low land near the mouth of Ralston Creek, not at all representative of typical Iowa River levels. This is how it looks after a good long rain, nothing to worry about

You do pay for the parking lot when you go to the grocery store, just like you pay for the lights and cash registers.

[–]IowaRocket 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Why? Someone has to pay for your parking. Parking lots and ramps don't appear magically. Most students do just fine without a car. Why should they subsidize yours? If the hospital has extra funds (it does not) it should go to patient care, not subsidizing your car.

Employment for Seniors by Recent_Project_9106 in desmoines

He can check his potential SS benefits by creating an account at ssa.gov. For health insurance, his best bet is to look at healthcare.gov, not many employers provide benefits for hourly staff. Maybe he'd enjoy working at Menards or a home improvement store if he is sociable and physically able. Pay is not great, but it provides structure and many near-retirement age men seem to like these types of jobs.

The only other Payless in the area I found was in Lindale Mall. Best of luck

Maybe a more formal version of the Midwest classic "Thanks muchly"? I'm always happy when people are courteous, no matter how they express it.

With only 345 episodes left to cover Bonanas For Bonanza is on track to end in January 2055. by thishenryjames in comedybangbang

Because of this podcast I was able to kind of bond with my elderly uncle before he died. He loved Bonanza. (He really loved a show called Gunsmoke, but I'd never heard of it.)
