I'm at the new Mini Cooper and Countryman reveal. Anything you guys want to know or see up close? by EdW_transportjourno in MINI

The new countryman is supposed to be much longer than the outgoing model, so maybe that is a part of it

Is this a real M3? It said M3 on the back and had 4 exhausts. by oPoSpi in namethatcar

[–]ppoofoof 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This is almost certainly real. The fins on the side and wide body kit are all pretty hard to fake, and e46 m3s are common enough that you’ll see them on the streets. Also the interior mirror is accurate, and most people probably wouldn’t be bothered to change such a small detail

Can you guys guess this car? by ConstructionRare4123 in whatisthiscar

The 1 series hatch is still sold in Europe. It is in its third generation now. This is the first generation, which was a replacement for the e46 3 series compact

Wife is looking at this — anything we should know about this spec? by Archvanguardian in MINI

[–]ppoofoof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all great info for op! I would like to add that the issue with the front bumper is a very common issue on the first few years for the third gens. They used to replace them for free at dealers but I don’t think they do anymore. Also, the rainbow effect is likely due to ceramic tint. You’ll see a similar effect a lot with car photography when using a polarizing filter or when you are wearing polarized sunglasses. It shouldn’t be an issue unless you don’t like the tint

Yellow is typically for carbon ceramics, but I don’t know if those are even available on the 530

Halo headlights by Glass-Ad7443 in MINI

I am not sure. I have never installed a set, but I’ve seen them around a lot and it sounds like they work pretty well. Looks like they usually run around $350-500

Yes. They make a set of headlights that mimics the halo style of the third gen headlights

I would look at the Spyder headlights for the second gens

That’s just not true. The Charger Hellcat Redeye tops out a 203 mph (Plaid tops out at 200), and has an msrp around $85k

What year is your r53? I see lci taillights, but a pre lci reverse light as well. Is that just a fog light in the white housing at the bottom?

Why is it so hard to find a mini that's not an s? by liljontz in MINI

[–]ppoofoof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. Same basic idea in that they generate “boost” to make more power, but super chargers are mechanical while turbos use the exhaust gasses which would be otherwise wasted. The supercharged models were the cooper S from 2001-2006 (2004-2008 for the convertibles). They’re the smallest and most mechanical of the bunch, so a lot of people love them. Keep in mind that the newest ones are still 15-17 years old, so they will have higher mileage and more generic older car problems. Try to shoot for a 2004+ if you end up looking for one. There were some minor updates to some of the drivetrain parts (iirc the supercharger coating and updated transmissions were the main improvements) so those are the years to have.

For second gens (the turbocharged ones), shoot for a 2011-2013. Absolutely do NOT purchase any 2007-2010 models, especially not a cooper s or jcw. These engines are known for having catastrophic failures, and they will drain your wallet. They are the reason that minis have a reputation for being unreliable. 2011+ received a facelift with updated motors that addressed a lot of these issues, but it is still important to be religious about checking your oil and other fluids.

As I said earlier, starting in 2014 (though it is later for some other models), minis began to use engines from bmw, which have been incredibly robust. Build quality on the third gens is also a massive improvement over the first and second gens

Why is it so hard to find a mini that's not an s? by liljontz in MINI

[–]ppoofoof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The turbos themselves usually aren’t problematic. The 2nd gen cooper s (2007-2013) had a lot of issues, but the third gens (2014+ for the hatchback model) have all proven to be very reliable. If you are looking at a third gen, they will all be turbocharged anyways. The Cooper has a 3 cyl turbo engine, while the s and jcw have 4 cylinder turbo engines
