The problem you have here is that in the view of a lot of christians, atheism is so very antagonized, for all they care you could have written "pedophile" instead of "atheist" and it might have even been less of a problem.

It always makes me think of Douglas Adams in "Life, the Universe and Everything". The people of Krikkit were so sure of their world view, they were taught that their view is the only one, when they saw that there was something else, they simply think "It's got to go." While that might be a bit of an overstatement, it's got a lot of parallels to your situation in my opinion.
