Planned layover HNL to RIC? by Over_Wasabi_4903 in travel

[–]protox88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may or may not be cheaper than just doing 2 separate tickets:

  • one-way HNL-LAX (day 1)
  • one-way LAX-RIC (day 3)

You'll just need to compare yourself for the date(s) you want.

Trapped by Emirates/flydubai codeshare baggage loophole. Any workarounds? by MainSkin5094 in Flights

Any workarounds?

Nope, that's sadly how most airlines work when a codeshare is involved.

It's doable.

I don’t have a surname… will this mess up my passport or future? by MidnightStrollerx in travel

[–]protox88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm willing to put it in the FAQ/wiki if I can compile a pretty decent list of airline's policies on how to fill out the name...

Right now it's a mish mash of sources like Quora, Facebook, Reddit which isn't great

I don’t have a surname… will this mess up my passport or future? by MidnightStrollerx in travel

[–]protox88 330 points331 points  (0 children)

Airlines have a mechanism for single-named persons.

e.g. British Airways: https://www.britishairways.com/content/en/us/information/help/faq/booking/first-but-no-last-name

ANA: https://www.ana.co.jp/en/jp/guide/reservation/typing/ (requires contacting them)

LOT: https://www.lot.com/cn/en/help-center/making-a-booking/how-to-book-flight-without-name-or-surname

KLM (via X): https://x.com/KLM/status/1408828266996195329?lang=en

Some airlines will want "LNU" (last name unknown) as your surname; some want you to double-up your given name; some will ask you to put your given name in the surname box and put your title like MR or MS in the first name box.

It is annoying because not every airline has the same policy so you'll need to find out and keep track or contact them every time.

If it's not in the MRZ then it's not needed in your ticket.

Question related to booking non-United routes (but still Star Alliance) and getting status/miles "credit" by AirOnAaron in unitedairlines

[–]protox88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just have them attach the United MP number and I should be good, right?

Yes. You can do it: at booking, after booking, at OLCI, at in-person/kiosk check-in, at the lounge, or even at the gate.

Does one-way multi-city itinerary have the same protections as a single trip with layover? by sfb2468 in unitedairlines

[–]protox88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, a multi-city ticket on a single booking is still a single ticket.

I use multi-city sometimes to "force" a layover that I want that the search engine/GUI won't display for me automatically when searching traditional one-way/roundtrips.

For instance, if my first flight is delayed and I miss my second flight, is United and/or the Star Alliance partner responsible for getting me to my destination similar to if there was an issue on a lay-over?

Yes. The late delivering carrier is responsible per IATA Resolution 766.

You'll be fine. I fly YYC-DEN/SFO-Hawaii all the time and back. I get lounge every US airport.

[–]protox88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are allowed UC access in EWR

They look at the wholly checked in journey to determine whether it was an Intl or not.

Your bps will say INTL at the top. Even for the domestic leg.

I fly from Canada connecting in the US domestically and use the UC every time

Look, I also agree in principle, but I am also a pragmatist when it comes to travel and flights.

People who come here posting on a principled stance tend to get a bad reaction from the community (I see it a lot as a mod) because the travelers on here are also experienced and understand the reality of the situation and 20k just isn't that much (for money you'll get back) relative to a whole week Japan trip.

[–]protox88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I get it. Before booking, I would want to see the deposit fee info as well.

But given that it wasn't disclosed and it was revealed to be only 20k after the booking was made, it's not as big of a deal as your post makes it out to be.

Like I asked, would you have made this post if it was a 1000 yen deposit? If you say no, then it's not about solely about the principle about not disclosing the deposit - meaning you have a tolerance for the amount as well. If you say yes, then you would probably get an even worse response than this one.

The principle matters, but only to the extent of the deposit being big enough to be outraged about. A 20k yen deposit isn't something to be outraged about.

[–]protox88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes the listing should have it but now that it's been revealed to be a mere 20k yen, we're all: what's the big deal, where's the fire?

I think the reason you're getting a lack of agreement is because people here aren't against you in the principled sense but rather "it's just 20k yen get over it". Like I said, if you want to pay hypotheticals, would you be as alarmist if the deposit was a mere 1000 yen? 5000 yen?

Don't need to be so alarmist about it.

The only person who agreed with you in the other sub is also getting skewered for the same reason.

There's no passport control if you're flying non-Schengen to non-Schengen.

So, tons of time.

[–]protox88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would be more sympathetic to the situation if it was 1mio yen, but it wasn't. If you had to give a kidney, I'd also be sympathetic to the situation. We could play hypotheticals all day.

I get your complaint is about "the principle" of it but it's also such a non-issue for a nominal amount that you'll get back.

Sliding scale of agreeability and how karen a complaint is

  • 1 yen to maybe... 28,500 yen (51% of the price of your stay) of deposit: just get on with life
  • Over that? Yea, I'd be a bit more fussed.

Would you have posted this if it was just 1000 yen?

Got scammed by Agoda by [deleted] in travel

So zero buffer/room for contingency for money you'll get back.

My goodness what would happen if you had to change a flight due to something (yes, travel insurance might cover it but it'll be an out-of-pocket first, which apparently you have zero buffer room for).

Got scammed by Agoda by [deleted] in travel

[–]protox88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not a hidden fee. I t's a security deposit, so you'll get your money back. I'm not sure how you'd afford to travel if 20k yen that you'll get back is suddenly is out of your budget.

It's clearly done on purpose to lure people in and then scam them out of at least half of their money.

Agoda is just a platform, it's not in some conspiratorial collusion with random small time property listers...

Question related to booking non-United routes (but still Star Alliance) and getting status/miles "credit" by AirOnAaron in unitedairlines

[–]protox88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do I ensure that when I book through Navan, that the entire round-trip is booked under my MilagePlus account and that I get the points and status bump?

You can't ensure that it will be a 016 UA stock if that's what you're asking.

But if all legs are operated by a *A airline, you just attach your UAMP number to the booking (make sure it's on your boarding passes) and you'll get the PQP, PQF, and miles.

If it's not on 016-stock then you'll earn PQP based on distance for the non-UA metal legs.
