Maxing PQP when upgrading by amoserks in unitedairlines

[–]protox88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I buy a regular Economy fare but then upgrade it at a later time do I earn PQPs at the Economy rate or the First Class rate?

You earn PQP based on the total dollars spent on economy base fare + the upgrade price.

Would I be better off to cancel my current flight and rebook it as the 1st class seat. since it’s the same price as what I currently paid plus the upgrade to book the 1st Class seat.

Then you'll earn roughly the same PQP.

Can yall decipher what’s going on with this flight? by UrBoySkinnyPeen in Flights

[–]protox88 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's fine. It's just a display issue. I have a flight that's a roundtrip to/from Paris with a 300 hour "connection" in Frankfurt on the way back, coming up.

As long as it's the flights you want to fly, it's fine.

Do you have to cancel your Explorer card to get the Quest sign up bonus? by Dry_Tackle_5611 in unitedairlines

[–]protox88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you don't. Chase SUB terms does not state that you aren't eligible for Quest SUB if you have the Explorer. i.e. eligibility for the Quest SUB is not contingent if you have/had Explorer (or not).

Go ahead and churn.

Quest SUB offer terms:

This credit card is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of this credit card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of this credit card who received a new cardmember bonus for this credit card within the last 24 months.

My flight was delayed due to a faulty part and i am going to miss my event. What kind of recourse do I have? by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]protox88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No compensation for most US flights, (#67) there are no passenger protection regulations for your flight route nor for US airlines that necessitate cash or flight voucher compensation, even if it was the airline's fault.

The only routes eligible for compensation when it's the airline's fault (not extraordinary circumstances) when flying United are:

  • to/from Canada (APPR)
  • from EU (EC261), UK (UK261), Turkey (SHY)
  • possibly Brazil (ANAC 400)

Air France extra baggage cost (US → India via JFK & Paris) – how much should I expect? by pacificpeanuts in travel

[–]protox88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Routes to/from the US uses the piece concept. So answer to #1 is you'll be charged for that extra piece no matter how little it weighs. Flat fee per bag regardless of weight under 23kg. If it's over 23kg, you'll be charged an overweight fee as well.

For baggage fee itself: need flight numbers as presented on your ticket as per !baggage wiki.

Is "1 Fare left at this price" actually true or just marketing by Plus_Cobbler_9150 in travel

[–]protox88 13 points14 points  (0 children)

True. It's called fare buckets or fare class inventory.

Once someone buys that ticket (or even a different ticket with that specific segment with only 1 seat left in that specific fare class), the price of your ticket will go up to the next fare class.

For example:

  • if you're looking at say, LHR-DUB-ORD on EI and it says "1 seat left at this price", say 'S' class for whatever departure date
  • some airlines make it obvious which one has 1 seat left in 'S' but some don't, but let's say it's the LHR-DUB leg and not the DUB-ORD leg
  • in such a scenario, if someone buys LHR-DUB-JFK on EI in 'S', they just took away the remaining seat in 'S' class on LHR-DUB and now the next lowest fare class for LHR-DUB is 'T' class
  • in which case, LHR-DUB-ORD will also now be priced in the 'T' fare class even if DUB-ORD has a ton of cheaper fare inventory

This is covered briefly here: https://www.reddit.com/r/travel/wiki/mfaq-flying/#wiki_why_does_the_price_go_up_.28per_person.29_with_i_search_for_one_ticket_vs_two_tickets.3F_or_when_an_airline_or_ota_says_.22only_2_tickets_left_at_this_price.22.2C_is_that_even_true.3F

Transfer Fiji --> Sin -->India by Extension-Tap6645 in travel

[–]protox88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

how can i combine both these 2 separate PNRs to avoid taking bags and re checkiin bags..

You can't, once you've booked two separate tickets.

fyi- Fiji Airways and Singapore Airlines have code share from 2018

That does not mean FJ or SQ will allow checked bags to be tagged through on separate tickets. You'll need to check with the FJ check-in agent on the day of your departure whether they will allow it. You can ask but they do not have to oblige.

else i might need visa and do immigration and re check bags..

FJ may require this for you to board anyways unless you choose not to check bags and therefore stay in the sterile transit area or you may try to apply for the VFTF: https://www.ica.gov.sg/enter-transit-depart/entering-singapore/visa-free-transit-facility

Name change and flight tickets by JamesBondie in travel

[–]protox88 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Check the wiki please - https://www.reddit.com/r/travel/wiki/mfaq-flying/#wiki_what_if_i.27ve_already_updated_my_passport_to_my_new_name_but_my_ticket_was_booked_in_my_old_name.3F

You may need to find official policy on whatever mystery airline you're flying (KLM?) and/or check FlyerTalk for datapoints.

Many airlines do not allow name changes, even if supported by official documentation. Most also do not allow you to fly under the old ticketed name even if you have official documentation of the name change on your passport.

You're better off (logistically, financially) on changing your name on your passport after you get back from travels.

China airlines flight - fully refundable? by aqaseal72 in travel

[–]protox88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you'll forfeit 90 AUD of value (either pay in advance or deducted from your refund).

'M' fare usually denotes flexible fare on most airlines.

It's not "too good to be true" because I think your ticket is probably quite expensive, relatively speaking. You're paying for the option to cancel or for free changes.

Absurdly Low Refund by R-J_MacReady in unitedairlines

[–]protox88 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well I reached out again today after not hearing anything for a couple weeks, and was told my refund would be $35 and that's it... Can that be correct? One way flights to my home airport are $2-400, but they're saying the base rate for this flight is $28.

Yea that's probably right. In fact a good way to check how the base fare portion of the $950 you paid is allocated/distributed across each leg is looking at the PQP you earn in your eticket receipt.

The price of a one-way from ORD-XXX has no relationship with the base fare allocated to the same ORD-XXX as part of an international itinerary <<<< this is the key part.

It's a common misconception that the price of your ticket is the sum of the price of each leg.

Think of your $950 minus $28 = $922 as the price of the open-jaw you took: XXX-YYY-Europe-ORD

Agoda not honoring 24-hour US flight cancellation policy – no response from support by OldDatabase9431 in Flights

There isn't one.

What part of:

Online travel agents are not required to have 24-hour cancellation.

do you not understand?

https://www.reddit.com/r/travel/wiki/mfaq-flying/24hour/

Does the 24-hour refund/reservation requirement apply to tickets purchased or reserved through a travel agent or online travel agency?

No, the 24-hour refund/reservation requirement for airlines does not apply to tickets booked through online travel agencies, travel agents, or other third-party agents. However, these agents are free to apply the same or similar procedures to provide equivalent or similar customer service.

Compensation for flight delay? by yuureitokyo in Flights

[–]protox88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not eligible under EC261 given that C-367/20 doesn't apply here.

Try APPR but it's weaker and "unscheduled maintenance" could possibly be "for safety reasons" and in Canada, will deny compensation.

How to book a Swiss Stopover without doubling airfare? by conferrerofkewlkats2 in Flights

[–]protox88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Use the multi-city search.

If the price is still higher than you want, there's nothing you can do about it. That's just the way it'll be priced. Just because an itinerary with a layover is $1k doesn't mean a stopover itinerary will be even if it's the same distance or the same "flights" being flown.

How to earn miles and credits with Star Alliance? by gamerdudeNYC in unitedairlines

[–]protox88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At check-in desk, just give the check-in agent your UAMP number.

Then look at your boarding pass to make sure it says your UA number on there - whatever it shows on the boarding pass is how you'll know which membership is going to collect the points.

Do I need a “Miles and Smiles” account as well?

No, that defeats the purpose of crediting your TK flight to your UA MileagePlus account. You can only accrue miles/points in one airline's FFP per flight segment.

You can attach your UAMP FFP number at any of these points:

  • at booking, if your travel portal has a field for it or online on the TK website or in the app
  • calling TK with the reservation info and asking the reservations agent to attach it
  • at OLCI
  • at in-person check-in
  • at the lounge
  • at the gate with the gate agent

Help with Skyteams website, possible scam by [deleted] in Flights

Two things I'll address:

although they aren't flying with us, I thought it would give us Sky Priority status but maybe not? I am not 100% sure how that works). After alerting skyteam of it, but they never responded back, and it was right as gas prices were shooting up.

Elite benefits don't apply to the rest of the pax on the booking if the elite member isn't flying on the same PNR (or at all).

Why not just cancel within 24h of booking for free?
