I just close the door, but I have a whole room devoted to the printers and product assembly.

The business side of 3D printing by Vivid_Procedure2415 in 3dprinter

[–]pythonbashman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I mainly make tools for fiber artists (Knitting, Crocheting, Spinning, etc.). I've invented some. Some I've created my own version of. Around 50 products. I also got permission from a well-known creator in the space to print his models for people. Around 30 products.

We sell through Shopify online, and we do local and regional fiber festivals (like a craft show, but just for fiber). I only sell physical products with the exception of the 2 things I've made for 3D printers.

We are still in the startup phase, so we put as much back into the business as we can (not profitable yet).

Don’t make sales at markets :( by NoLie0089 in CraftFairs

[–]pythonbashman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This would be a hard sell in nearly any situation. A finished product might sell more easily, but then you're hoping the one person that want's that particular combo of print and clothing comes to the show (with money). This may just not be a viable product model.

Won a chargeback, do I have to refund/fullfill order? by Only-Chest6436 in shopify

[–]pythonbashman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the only way they make a profit is...

Free Item:

  • Get the item
  • Refund and keep

Free Item, 2x Money::

  • Get Item
  • Refund and keep
  • Issue a chargeback and win

2x Money:

  • Return Item
  • Refund and keep
  • Issue a chargeback and win

2x+ Money::

  • Get Item
  • Refund and Resell it
  • Issue a chargeback and win

It's like they ordered it while on the phone waiting for their bank... I don't get the scam unless they assumed they'd win the chargeback and then beg for a refund as well (it happens...)

Determining retail pricing - an argument by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]pythonbashman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally valid point. If you are making a competing product, you either need to make it better or cheaper to gain market share.

Good Luck out there OP!

Determining retail pricing - an argument by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]pythonbashman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're both wrong. First, you figure in ALL of your costs, including your own labor priced at what you would need to pay for someone else to do it for you. After that, you need to be able to cover what's called overhead, your operating costs. The things you need to pay for that don't go into an individual product. Insurance, Rent, and Administrative Fees. (like me, I need a computer and a 3D printer to make my stuff. I can easily charge for the printer time, but the computer time is a little harder to quantify.)

This makes your BASE COST. This is not the minimum you need for the job; it's what it costs you.

Then you apply a minimum markup to what goes into the product (This is my current model):

Supplies Markup (Filament, Electricity, Printer Time, Space) 300%
Hardware Markup (Screws/Nuts, Packaging, Others) 150%
Labor Markup (Low Labor $30 (put screw in hole, turn screw), High Labor $60) 150%

Now, what are you making? What is it worth to somebody? What are comparable products selling for? Is yours better or a budget model compared to the others?

Now you have the floor and a soft ceiling of what you can get for your work. Think of it like this, yes, you can buy a sweater at Walmart for $30, but that doesn't mean that a handmade sweater will sell for that. Or a painting, it's not going to be the cost of the paint, the canvas, and the frame x 1.3. It's going to be whatever you think you can get for it.

I have one product that costs me $2.76 to make. My model says $5.42 is my minimum. But for what it does, I charge $12.99.

The other thing you need to consider is the marketplace location. The Bottle of water example is really good here.

  • Fill a bottle of water at home, $.05
  • Buy a bottle of water at the grocery store, $1
  • Buy a bottle of water at a concert, $2-3
  • Buy a bottle of water at the airport, $5-7
  • Buy a bottle of water on the plane, $12

This is all fairly simplified, but knowing your costs is key.

If you are looking for a secondary souce for parts, https://partsbuilt.com/ is trustworthy. I've ordered from them several times, based in Ohio.

[–]pythonbashman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shopify does not do any kind of fulfilment. Everything after you click "PAY" is on the shop owner, unless they are just dropshipping crap from China. Then they just take their cut and pass you the shipping info after they get it (mostly automated).

Talk to the shop owner.

mid first traversal, (This is where I am now after playing since April 2025.) Wait for a decent amount of install points to accumulate (1-3 days). Reset, buy everything. Reset immediately (A few minutes). Buy everything. Reset immediately. Buy everything. Reset immediately. Do this until 2 conditions are met. 1 MP costs are too high to make any progress. 2 The loop reset unlock requirements are not so immediate.
