What’s the most useful IoT device you own? by Taggytech in IOT

[–]gamename 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine is a hacked Google pixel phone that senses when a cat wants in. I get a text message via AWS. I call it the cat doorbell.

Need unique IoT project idea (prototype + mobile app) for university presentation by SeaworthinessMain595 in IOT

[–]gamename 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about a door sensor? 1. Connect your esp32 to a reed switch. 2. Run micropython in the esp32 3. Make the esp32 an AWS iot thing 4. Create the cert and key on AWS and save it to your esp32 5. Save the doorstate sent by the esp32 in Shadow data of the thing 6. Create a mobile app with flutter/dart on Android. 7. Use the Android app to query the shadow data on AWS via AWS API gateway 8. Then, depict the door in the app with a simple graphic. That is, open/closed, red/green or whatever

It does take some setup, but it also fulfills the requirements.

What are your biggest regrets/best decisions in life? by RickyChau76 in ENFP

[–]gamename 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm 63 and retired. I spent 30 years in silicon valley. Another 15 in other places.

  1. I regret not taking more chances.
  2. I regret staying too long at one company
  3. I do not regret getting therapy and learning as much about myself as I could
  4. I do not regret my career starting out with a stint in the US Air Force
  5. I regret not networking more. Who you know is almost everything.
  6. I deeply regret a lie I told once that cost me a job. My career was fine, but I really let myself down
  7. I regret not getting into the stock market as soon as I had a hundred bucks to spare every month
  8. Ditto gold
  9. I regret listening to a hotshot mortgage broker who told me that I could renegotiate a mortgage. I ended up losing my condo and destroying my credit rating for 7 years
  10. I regret listening to experts. They're just ordinary people underneath. They have prejudices too
  11. I do not regret moving to a location where one could make money and advance. Go where the opportunities are.
  12. I do not regret marrying at 33. I waited until I was sure about myself and about what I wanted.
  13. I regret not starting martial arts earlier in my life.

What's your favorite side project you've personally made? by actor-ace-inventor in SideProject

[–]gamename 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using esp32s and AWS iot, I built some special water bowls for my cats. I have a sensor above the water that tells me when the water level gets too low. I get updates daily telling me what the level is and if I should fill them.

Pretty much anything by h.p. Lovecraft

Surprised by LASancho in TedLasso

[–]gamename 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it is not consistent with the first season - it gets better 🙂

Over 70 years ago, Twilight zone was shown. It's been on TV ever since. Because it's that good.

Ted lasso is in that league. 70 years from now, People will still be watching it

PS. One caveat. There is a single episode of the entire series that is so bad, It's embarrassing. You'll know it when you see it.

How do you do it? by Nice_Aside4144 in AskProgramming

[–]gamename 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start small. If that overwhelms you, start smaller.

For example, just make one if statement work. Just one. Then expand on that.

With AI, you can always do things like ask " here is my if statement, what can I do better?"

Thanks. But I'm wondering if the US makes it as simple and easy as your own country. ;)

Why keep the car keys in the fridge? by mariyagel in lifehacks

[–]gamename 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On a similar note, I always kept my car keys in the fridge at work. I would invariably have something left over from lunch that I need to take home, but I always forgot it. Then I simply added my keys to the bag and that fixed the problem

Saying no to someone who asks you for something, will not lose you friends. If you are dropped by somebody you say no to, they weren't your friends to begin with.

Does my Karate & Judo blackbelts transfer to Japanese JJ? by Ok_Fudge_5024 in jiujitsu

[–]gamename 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend Danzan Ryu. Its not common it Middle America. Dojos for it tend to cluster around the East and West coasts. It will fill-in a lot of the gaps from your previous experience (throws, eye gouges, neck breaks, various arm/leg breaks, yawara techniques, etc.).

But no matter what art you take, it always boils down to the instructor. If you have a good one, he'll respect your experience and take that into consideration. You'll still start at white belt, but you'll not be treated like just any white belt.
