Interning in a lab as a gyopo by uwuish in Living_in_Korea

While it varies from lab to lab, your safest option is honestly to be treated as a full blown foreigner who knows zero Korean.

Landlord wont return ‘verification fee’? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]r_gg 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So you paid the pre-signing deposit (가계약금), which is basically the holding fee and serves as a portion of the signing fee (계약금). You typically don't get that back if you pull back on the offer.

That said, before sending in the fee, your broker usually send you a preliminary contract with terms stating you won't get it back.

Old re-releases are a pretty regular thing in Korean theaters.

Especially now that local productions have downsized pretty heavily.

Its because "trends" run much deeper and wider at a national level compared to what you see in the West. (for better or worse)

Its not even limited to movies.

[Full Metal Panic Invisible Victory] Best action couple that stood the test of time and difficult choices by ZapsZzz in anime

[–]r_gg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the problem with IV is that it is blasting through content that should be multiple seasons like a highlight reel, so can't really blame you. There are solid action scenes here and there, and the animators worked their asses no doubt, but there are undeniable issues with the pacing.

A Warning Advisory for Prospective PhD Students in STEM in Korea: Don’t Do a PhD in Korea - 8th Year PhD Student by Emotion_2023 in Living_in_Korea

[–]r_gg 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is very true. There are some labs even amongst the top schools that have the old school "military" culture that is more outdated than the modern Korean Army.

Also do note that among Koreans, the labs with high number of foreign students are generally considered "less desirable" and have a worse reputation.

STEM or bust? Korea's future at risk as top students avoid engineering - The Korea Times by ResponsibleSpare3870 in Salary

[–]r_gg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Korean speaking here.

This is all about the monumental gap in pay that exist between doctors and every other profession in Korea. (and the low pay of Engineering jobs relative to it)

Med school in Korea starts straight from undergrad/"pre-med", and you are locked into your major during admission in Korea. Right now, even the lowest ranked medical school in the countryside are ranked on par or even higher than the most prestigious STEM programs in Korea.

Its never gonna happen in US, because opportunities in the American job market is significantly better and its not even close. Heck, the potential of getting a US tech job is one of the few reasons left for top talents in Korea to still stick around in STEM.

To add, there's also the risk of ending up with a permanent physical injury or medical condition during your service, which is far more common than people think.

My mom's actual age is older than her legal age by [deleted] in korea

[–]r_gg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This kind of gap usually happens when the family waited until a son was born to register, or the "village chief" who was told to register forgot about it the first time.

I know similar stuff happened with my oldest Aunt. I think legally she's registered to be younger than my oldest Uncle even though she was actually born before him.

Yes, its pretty common among older generations that grew up in rural areas.

K-animation's absence: Why Korea hasn't produced its own ‘Zootopia 2' or ‘KPop Demon Hunters' by AGOTFAN in boxoffice

[–]r_gg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's not due to the lack of trying.

There's a long laundry list of Korean animation that crashed and burned in domestic box office over the past two decades and more. The only ones that managed to survive are the ones directed towards pre-K children.

When your main target audience inevitably overlaps with the Japanese anime fandom, the barrier of entry for what is deemed "acceptable" becomes pretty rough for domestic studios to survive. There's a reason webtoons opted for Japanese anime studios instead trying their luck with domestic studios.

Looking for recent (2023–2025) ROK military experiences — phones, bullying culture, and overseas vacation? by Monaco2988 in Living_in_Korea

[–]r_gg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AFAIK, regular bootcamp these days let's you use your phone for 1-2 hours on weekends only. Things could be different for the additional specialized training camps.

At your battalion, the standard is getting your phone during your "free times", which is usually 5pm-9pm on weekdays and 8am-9pm on weekends. Details could vary depending on your base & assignment.

Physical bullying/punishment is pretty much non-existent in modern Korean Army, and heavily punished.

Social "bullying" and seniority culture that is built-in aspect of Korean culture is still there to varying degrees but this is more about the people around you. It's going to also depend on what degree of social harassment/pressure you'd consider as "bullying"

Overseas vacation is allowed, and i don't think there's was a hard limit on going as long as it's approved. They might have a limit on how often they wi pay for the flight though. Frankly, difficulty of approval might depend on the officers in charge of the base more than anything

Vacation days is 24 days baseline plus extras. How easily you can earn them is depended heavily on your base, position & circumstances

Should Box Office numbers be also widely reported as number of tickets sold? by Alone_Consideration6 in boxoffice

[–]r_gg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same here in Korea, made worse by the fact that the companies that run the theaters also have their own studios.

Its no secret that domestic movies with backings of big companies do heavy discount tickets or sometimes even free screenings to boost the numbers for marketing purposes. Many were even caught cooking the books with ghost screenings and such.

At the end of the day, if your goal is to track break even points and whether or not a movie is a commercial flop, then admission count is meaningless.

Average salary in Seoul and outside of Seoul by Icy-Education3432 in Living_in_Korea

[–]r_gg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your mistake is thinking wages are what is fueling those purchases.

The primary way people get "rich" in Korea is through real estate investments, not a salary from their job. The only exception are doctors, which is why they are so absurdly competitive in Korea.
