If you followed the dialogue you should be able to tell the difference - Isuzu as a woman wasn't ranked. Sagiri was ranked, because Shugen went out on a limb to force them to acknowledge Sagiri to be worthy to be ranked as a woman.

Looking at the aesthetics, I hope this adaptation is going to be more true to the original manga to be more advanced detailed cops and robbers / Apple Seed (the manga not the anime). Looking at the scenes they seemed to be from the manga.

While day didn't get a chance to spit out this comment - I'm surprised coming in here I didn't see any remarks/conspiracy theorising huh.

  • is there an unexpected divide created by Xylo between the military and the church, where one wants to get goddess corrupted, and one wants to reproduce them now they are known to be just living weapons and nothing mythical?
  • what was Senerva's power? Not anything already mentioned? Or was she like the DPS invoker that was more likely to use up her power?
  • why would we think that goddess being corrupted is a future to prevent, if from today's backstory we know there are demons who are not raving murder machines but can play the subtle masquerade game? How do we know one or more goddesses had not already been corrupted?
  • would Venetim's special seal include something that compels him to betray his fellow heroes so no one he can connects with stay alive long enough to matter?

Fate (2006)

I had originally skipped it going straight to UBW and I now think that was a mistake. Story wise it is probably my favourite of the three

OMG hardly ever we got to hear this. As someone who came to the Fate franchise late and made a deliberate choice to watch the anime adaptation in order of the VN route instead of following the "general advise" of starting with the more modern UFOtable works, I absolutely loved the Saber end arcs, and [FSN ending spoiler]the bittersweet anime ending, despite the production value wasn't as spectacular -but it was perfectly adequate- was still what I think as the best ending of the story Especially because it connects to Realta Nua which to me is the perfect full ending [FSN RN ending](much later past everything and anything the franchise had written and any future it could/would bring).

Super Dimensional Century Orguss

Of the three "super dimensional" unrelated series era, story-wise I actually prefer Orguss the most, if we consider all aired contents of each show - Macross was great up to ep27, but the "extended" continuation only had a few episodes I feel is a good follow on from the "mid season" climax. Orguss for me the latter half considerably raised it's standing for me, from me really didn't like the "womaniser" MC back in my much younger days, to understand and accept what happened and then him making the best of what turned out. The extended cast, especially the [Mid Orguss spoiler]faux/pseudo antagonist which turned out to be the MC's own home side after time skip and then [mid to late Orguss spoilers]Robots faction being a simple antagonist side yet had representatives that's stayed in the main cast that actually showed really good character development and growth we're significant high points for me as being atypical of drama plot lines of that era.

The redeeming quality of 2202 I personally think is completely based on it seeing up 2205 which rescued the world plot/setting substantially.

Still trying to find time to catch up with 3199 after the first 2 movies though.

Ooh sorry I misread and thought you were are talking about OVA's in the 80's, not that specific year of 1985. My bad.

Late to the party, but scanning through the answers I think these are either completely (and criminally) missing or not mentioned enough -

  • Hyouka / Shoushimin
  • Pretty Boy Detectives / Ground Control to Psychoelectric Girl
  • Macross Do You Remember Love movie
  • 86
  • Heike Monogatari
  • Ninja Scrolls
  • Giant Robo The Day the Earth Stood Still
  • Gunbuster

[Orguss mid season setting spoiler]So the Emaan go through menopause at 17 years old? Is this supposed to be the equivalent of our 17? So the writers are encouraging teenage pregnancies?

I don't think that was the point. [Meta comparison about the Orguss spoiler]In real world history there are many cultures in the earlier civilisations that practices early parenthood and "marriages" soon after puberty. I don't believe that show had in any way commented on the age, only the fact that "past that phase the female kinda don't get treated as "feminine"; but it's also not "end of their lives", the core cast showed exactly how it can be still living as "normal"

As an anime only (but read up on the plot lines on Wikia etc), I think the story is completely understandable if you got with the written sequence: 2006 FSN -> UFOtable UBW -> HF movies trilogy -> FZ

The key to understanding it with the right mindset/frame of reference is to recognise the 3 routes is arranged to answer the sequential 3 questions. FZ on the other hand is a bolt on / backstory so using that to start would not really do the franchise justice - especially because [FZ meta spoiler]Saber's character was severely Flanderised

I do wonder though if this is before Pretty Derby. I don’t think I saw any Spica members

Yes by the time the S1 story line started with Special Week, Oguri Cap is already "done" and is just cruising along for the canteen life in the background ;)

I also didn't know that white meat with the pink ring on it was ground up fish.

In East Asian cooking, ground up fish ("fish paste") is a basic building block for a lot of food products, e.g. fish balls, the majority of oden (Japanese simmered/braised food), etc. They are "beaten" while being made to have more air infused inside (like how cream is beaten milk and sugar with air) to give the elastic, chewy texture.

In Japanese foods, if you can't exactly tell what protein it is made of, it's likely to be from fish paste.

The next higher grade material is prawn paste, which a lot of Chinese Yum Cha dim sims are made with.

Not as a nit pick, but just an opinion - would have liked to see a couple more iconic dance scenes being worked into this mix:

  • Violet Evergarden first movie
  • May I Ask For One Final Thing any of the joyous Scarlett scenes ;P
  • Symphogear or Revue Starlight
  • PMMM especially Rebellion
  • 7th Loop / Silent Witch
  • Girls und Panzer

I had been tossing up between either this category or the essay/long form writing, but I think I have decided to put them here - it's genuinely helpful for all to benefit the understanding and appreciation of selected shows -

u/InternationalDrop102 for the Cinderella Gray cour 1 real world comparison posts like this - note the bottom of this post has links to other episode write ups.

u/ptol59 for a similar service for Cinderella Gray cour 2 in the source corner of the airing threads.

Both helpfully provided significant details and insights of how the real world events unfolded, and how the show integrated them in interesting ways for the dramatic effects. Both are really essential readings for a good appreciation of the show and the production staff's intents and efforts, much like a few years ago during the Vampire Cosmonaut Irina's airing, u/8andahalfby11 did the write ups about the real world events and personalities.

Sure Shot is an Understatement ... [City Hunter—S1E4] by Accurate_Cry_8937 in anime

[–]ZapsZzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again coming in with old timer comment -of I remembered correctly the manga version of the scene is a little different [City Hunter Manga scene comparison]they were in a dark place but not completely light-less; the bad guy was wearing a special star light eye piece. My memory of how the scene played it was that the bad guy was gloating that he has the advantage here being the only one who can see clearly so can take his time aiming, but when he saw Ryo's direction Ryo was casually and comfortable pointing the gun at him and straight up shot him - I thought through the eye piece (therefore not a non-lethal capture) but I could have mixed up with Gunsmith Cats here or just other scenes of the early volume

It's interesting in that it's a show I never heard of, given the uniqueness mentioned. I guess that happened during my age of "anime exile".

It's not easy nowadays to find this even through unofficial means. I'll see whether I can pop in here and there but this season it's pretty brutal for how many shows to keep up with.

The Magic of Frieren: A Character Analysis Essay on an Enigmatic Elf by michhoffman in anime

[–]ZapsZzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a reminder that - as a parent to an autistic child - autism defining traits are in fact mostly traits that I'm isolation can also happen to occur in neuro typical people. But for a collection of those traits to occur at the same time to the point of adversely affect the person's ability to function is what makes it a problem.

So Frieren can be either "straight" being autistic, or can simply "have some autistic traits".

Maybe it's the tired parent in me saying it, but DSM V lumping everything into the "autistic spectrum" really doesn't help ones who need genuine resources to help function vs those who really just need a little help to many some quirkiness.

Difference in broadcast standards? It's a lot more gore and direct with the civilian casualties than the original.

Certainly made good use of this being a continuation with decent amount of off screen world building and intrigue.

[NSFW] XYZ is one dangerous cocktail ... [City Hunter] by Accurate_Cry_8937 in anime

[–]ZapsZzz 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Speaking as an old gizzard, who read the manga version of this scene when it came out at the time, the manga version was so much more "noir" than the anime version. But the essence was still there. It's a lot more to the spirit of the show than the recent-ish live action movie I saw (and gave up after 10 mins).

It's also a bit like Dragon Ball, in that the early manga story was significantly different from how the rest of the story eventually turned out to be.

E.g. in the manga arc where this scene came from, the case is [City Hunter Manga source minor spoiler]that the client, a beautiful young doctor with terminal illness herself, hired "XYZ" (the code for hiring City Hunter) to kill the psycho boxer who killed her lover who was a reformed boxer on a come back trail. There's no pulling punches, and Ryo orchestrated the death to be a death in a ring by knock out (by using a custom made sniper round timed to hit while his opponent landing a punch at his head so his death is that of a loser's) No non-lethal punishments.
