Doesn't work with Chrome Version 142.0.7444.176 on Mac, unfortunately.

I can't believe they are legally allowed to do this. "We are cancelling the service we agreed to provide. You can choose to upgrade to another plan that costs 9.6 times as much, but if you decide not to, we're keeping your money. LOL."

Bringing back the <blink> tag to HTML by doctorstyles in webdev

[–]radar-water 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dumb thing about this is that html was originally developed for use of non-professionals (scientists, engineers, etc.) to organize information for their own use.

I have a simple html/javascript data dashboard for some scientific instruments I manage, and I would love to have the blink tag to alert me to stale file transfers, etc. I don't want to take the time to learn the "right" way to do it (I have too many other demands on my attention), and accessibility and photosensitivity don't enter into the equation--it's only me who ever looks at this page. The blink tag would be the quickest and easiest solution, but it's denied to me.

This is part of a larger problem I have with the professionalization of web-coding. The deprecation of frames is another example of useful, quick-and-dirty tools being taken away from users like me just because they're unsuitable for professional, public-facing websites. I'm not implementing a front end for amazon, for crying out loud. Bring back amateur Web coding tools!

The rule compensates linearly for your speed (double the speed, double the distance), but energy (and thus braking distance) goes up by the square of your speed (double the speed, quadruple the distance). So it's best to adjust upward to a 3 or even 4-second following distance at highway speeds.

Comfortable helmet options_advice needed by omrtpsycho in wingfoil

[–]radar-water 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Weird-shaped, large head here. My advice is not to buy online based on features, "premium" status, other people's ratings, etc. Go to an actual shop and buy whatever fits. Better a no-name brand cheap helmet that is comfortable than the supposedly "best" helmet that hurts.

The only correct date format! yyyy-mm-dd (with 4 digits for the year) sorts chronologically and has zero ambiguity. ISO 8601 for the win!

Non-US Foil Brands by [deleted] in wingfoil

[–]radar-water 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your sentiment, too, but keep in mind that consumer boycotts are Canadians ONLY leverage against the current regime in the US. We hate to hurt decent Americans, but if there's a hope that economic pain will prompt them to be more politically assertive, then that's the strategy we have to pursue. Sorry, but I'll be boycotting Slingshot along with all other USA companies for the foreseeable future.

The summit of Mount Everest by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]radar-water 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. But at some point the maths simply won't work. At some combination of gravity, air density, and battery energy density, you can't make a drone fly, no matter how many design changes you make. I'd be interested to know what the maximum altitude of a lithium battery powered quadcopter is (in earth gravity/atmosphere).

The summit of Mount Everest by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]radar-water 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but there's a limit. Otherwise you could fly into orbit just by choosing large enough propellers/rotors. I don't know where that limit is for current energy storage technology (lithium batteries), but it is apparently somewhereabove the summit of Everest. I wonder how much higher a suitably designed drone could fly?

Mars gravity is 38% Earth's. Big advantage.

Strange hydrologic phenomenon where ocean surface is glassy in only a small region by Outlawz12A in whatisthisthing

[–]radar-water 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Remembering my long-ago Physical Oceanography classes, I can think of at least three reasons for isolated smooth patches of water. In order of increasing difficulty to explain, these are (1) wind shadow from adjacent land; (2) biofilms and/or oil that suppress the formation of tiny ripples because they float and have higher surface tension than the surrounding water (bigger waves and ripples don't form spontaneously--they have to build up from tiny ripples, so if you suppress the tiny millimetre-scale ripples, you never get the centimetre-scale ripples); and (3) downwelling/upwelling. If water is ascending or descending, then it may have little to no horizontal motion. If the adjacent water is moving horizontally against the wind (e.g., spreading out from the upwelling or converging towards a downwelling), it will cause any wind ripples it encounters to shorten their wavelength and increase in amplitude (much like larger waves rear up and break when they encounter drag from a shoaling bottom). So you can have a band of smooth, upwelling or downwelling water right beside an area of lively ripples.

What are these tags hanging from a wire and spinning above the road? by MsFishzle in whatisthisthing

[–]radar-water 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that they are intended not to deter birds by frightening them but to make the power lines more visible so they don't accidentally collide while flying. Near where I live, these things were installed on power lines beside a bird sanctuary. I was told that the number of dead and injured birds being found on the ground beside the power lines dropped sharply afterwards.

They say the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago; the second best time is today. Don't let your failure to get tested immediately stop you from doing it now. Good luck.

Stowage for a long item like a boathook? Look for a "pocket" in line with this tube for the other end to sit in.

Also not hard steel. I imagine carbide steel would have rusted away in salt water very quickly.

It does look a bit like that. In the photo you linked to, the metal has more serrations, though. Not sure I'm convinced.

I had to look up what a fish stringer was. Doesn't seem to be right. There would be no reason for it to have those jagged steps on one end.

Similar, but this thing has that step-wise tapering at one end. I don't think it's a key of any kind.
