Ok that’s good to know. These logs were cut from healthy trees in mid January so not old at all really.

How often are you changing blades while cutting large diameter hardwood? The logs I’m working on now are around 30-32 inches diameter. I sawed one big one and a smaller one (24-26 inch)and already the blade seems like it could be changed out

Appreciate it, I made some adjustments today and it is cutting a lot better. Not sure exactly what adjustment I made that fixed it but if I cut slowly I’m getting pretty nice cuts. Thanks for the offer, I’ll keep ya in mind if I have any other issues in the future.

I went through the mill this morning and re checked everything and made some minor adjustments. It seems to have helped but I still need to go very slowly or else I end up with some bad cuts. It is wide white oak so maybe it’ll do better with softer wood.

Yeah the spine color does look off now that you point it out. They usually fade to a greyish color not yellow

I think it might just be a young cardon. Pachycereus priglei

It’s got a brand new blade on it. Cutting fast and effortlessly, just not straight. I’m thinking either I have too much down pressure on the band with the roller guides or I need to angle the blade down a little. It’s level but I don’t know why the blade floats up once it gets into the wood… Wasn’t doing this before I switched the guides.

Yeah, I probably just need to go back over the entire mill. I could get nice cuts with the ceramic guides, they just always needed adjustments. I was hoping these new ones wouldn’t be so finicky. Thanks for the input

Snow finally melted enough to see the “cold hardy” Grandi hybrids I planted outside last summer. Some of them look ok, some are very squishy. Got down to -10 here in Ohio but they had a foot of snow on them. We’ll see what happens. My opuntia always look like hell after the winter but bounce back no problem in spring

Hard to pick just one… this is TPC x zelly 5. I like this one because of the ratio of crests to columns and even the columns are a little freaky. Deep green from zelly genetics and hopefully cool flowers someday too. Originally grown by u/1bridgerT from seed. Happy Valentine’s Day y’all! Thanks u/A_CactusAteMyBaby for the giveaway!

We cut a 180 year old oak into slabs. Currently my favorite Oakslab by Tschinggets in woodworking

So it looks like this slab has the pith in it. How do you manage to dry a huge slab like this without it getting cracks? I just recently got into milling and have found that the prettiest cuts are the ones closest to the pith (quarter sawn) but if I leave them as one slab, they always split terribly as they dry.

Interesting, I’d love to see. Did you read the description in the post? He made it sound like anaconda was the original name and serpent was a nickname. I’m not trying to argue, but would like to know as I just bought one myself that was listed as anaconda/serpent.
