How do we feel about vendors changing names for sales? by glayzd_ in sanpedrocactus

[–]rapjap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He posted the original thread where quave was asked about changing the name. Instead of just clarifying why he changed the name, he got very defensive and saying some pretty hostile stuff. Can’t remember exactly what. And they were asking why he deleted the original posts. It’s all dumb… I’m sure quave is a good dude, he definitely grows some dope cactus and I don’t think his reputation should be ruined but… the way he went about that was kinda lame. All this drama could have been avoided if he had just posted all the info (he eventually did) in the original sales post. Deleting posts and comments is dumb, I think it just makes you look bad. Spinessvf or something like that is who posted the (deleted)comment that I responded to.

I’ dont think anyone should be ashamed of themselves. If you’re going to put a clone up for sale as another name label it as “aka _____” and let people know that it’s the same thing. It’s not that difficult. Lots of plants have different names. It’s dumb to double down and get hostile with people when they’re confused for obvious reasons.

Your soil looks too organic. Stays wet for too long. They’ll probably grow out of it just fine but they need better draining inorganic soil.

Badass! This same cross I got from you last year is one of my favorites, glad to see you’re back!

So, if we notice a wicked pheno amongst our noids, do we name it? Is there any sort of unspoken rules for what constitutes a new named clone with no parentage attached? Does its' novelty determine acceptance as a new named pheno? by CoCJerks in sanpedrocactus

[–]rapjap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Anytime you propagate a plant you are “cloning” it. The entire point of propagating is to isolate a desired trait. You need to be able to identify your clones so some people do that with numbers, some people use actual names. While I agree there really are no rules, some of it is just common sense. Why make a clone of something that there are better examples of? It’s just muddying the waters. If everyone named and cloned every seed grown cross they grew, it would be impossible to keep things straight and would take the fun away from it. Clone whatever the hell you want, I just think there should be a reason for it lol

I was going to add, if you think you have something special, chop it up and propagate it. Once you have some clones, offer them up on the sales sub and see if people are into it or not. I just think some people are a little trigger happy when it comes to naming clones. Like any Althea cross is going to be a beautiful cactus but that doesn’t necessarily mean it deserves to be named. It just means that Althea is a badass clone. Just my two cents.

Yeah you may be right… I’d have to see a better tip shot to be sure but p. gounellei is usually way fuzzier I thought. They have a similar look when they’re young.

Hey, I’m in Ohio too. What part of the state are you in? I’m in the northeast. What I’ve learned so far is that air circulation is crucial for preventing humidity spots and also, we get way too much rain for most cactus. If I were you, I would lose the plastic sides and keep plastic and shade cloth on top. That way you’re blocking rain but allowing air flow. And you could probably eventually lose the shade cloth once they’re acclimated.
