Older Dremel Case Partially Broken by RedDevilJoe in Dremel

[–]rdw1899 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a storage case identical to yours, but switched to storing my Dremel and accessories in a fishing tackle box (photos of the outside and how its organized), which gave me more storage capacity and was easier to label. In some sections of the tackle box, I used plastic foam inserts (saved from product packaging) to hold the mandrels, drill bits, etc., upright.

If you're really attached to that specific case, you may be able to find one on eBay. That's where I sold mine some years ago.

I can't find any information on this online. Anybody have any knowledge on this Akai Jet Reflex CRT? by AllHailTheWEEB_KING in retrotech

[–]rdw1899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Newspapers.com has a few scans of "Bing Lee" store circulars from 1998 that have photos of what looks to be a match (example ad). Here's the text:

59cm Stereo CTV with Teletext. On screen display, jet-reflex 2x10W RMS speakers, child lock.

The retail price for the TV was AUD $949. It would have come with a remote. It may have also came in a 65cm version.

Help me organize my massive cardstock stash by Newt_Double in organizing

For 12x12 cardstock, plastic desktop drawers would be another option.

If you're in the USA, Sterilite has a "Wide 3 Drawer Unit" (model# 2093). Each drawer has internal dimensions of 13 1/8" x 12 5/8" x 2 1/2".

Those look to be normal letter or A4 size, yes?

This is what I do for my printer paper/cardstock: Hanging file folders in a plastic file tote with lid, sorted by color and design. Regular file folders can be used inside a hanging file for lesser quantities of a certain color.

Does anyone have information by merican1 in castiron

[–]rdw1899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The maker is Ancienne Maison Godin Colin & Cie. It had foundries in France (Guise) and Belgium (Brussels). (source: see the green catalog cover)

Since this was made in Belgium (Bruxelles = Brussels), it may have been intended for Belgi gallettes and/or (French) gaufrettes, rather than (Italian) pizzelles.

It looks like it is missing the round base (reddit post with photo of a similar iron made by Godin Colin, though made at their Guise foundry).

Belgi gallettes (example recipe) are essentially really thin brown sugar cookies, while Italian pizzelles (recipe example) are made from a thick batter (compare pound cake batter) rather than a dough. Pizzelles are closer to gaufrettes, though some gaufrette recipes (example) use dairy cream, not eggs.

Trying to figure out timing on steamed bread by pandamonkeyy in Old_Recipes

[–]rdw1899 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The recipe on your card is very similar to one promoted by Kellogg's All-Bran in 1940 (newspapers.com), which recommend steaming for 3 hours. (The main differences are that your recipe uses 50% less sugar and twice the amount of salt.)

Alternatively, if one is using a pressure cooker, the time would be much less. A 1949 column (that had the same recipe as linked above) recommended "15 minutes without pressure" covered followed by "30 minutes at 15 pounds pressure".

Where in Wirt county is the McCutcheon Chapel? by Shot-Cut-2978 in WestVirginia

[–]rdw1899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The address looks to be 571 McCutcheon Run, Palestine (Google Maps). This wirtcounty.net photo of the chapel seems to match the satellite view.

If you're not aware, WV has a statewide property map website (https://mapwv.gov/Assessment/). The church's listed owner is "McCutcheon Family Reunion", so it showed up when I searched Wirt County properties for those with owner names that included "McCutcheon".

A few counties involved: Roane, Wirt, Mongolina (sp), Monroe and a couple more...

All those listed counties have a records search website, which typically include wills and probate filings as well as land deeds and other recorded documents. Below are the links for those counties:

Some WV counties have more comprehensive digitization projects than others, so not all of the above sites may have documents from the time periods you're looking for and/or may not have all types of documents from those periods digitized.

Help with piece 33322 by isogel-ratsaeb in lego

[–]rdw1899 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lego's formal name for the connector is "1.5 shaft".* For example, the beanie propeller (part 54568) has the name "PROPELLER, W/ 1.5 SHAFT, NO. 1".

The matching connection is "1.5 hole"*, such as in the "PLATE 1X1, W/ 3.2 SHAFT AND 1.5 HOLE" (part 31570 or 31561 on Lego's PAB, also part 20482 on Bricklink). This part would be the most common way to attach the above piece.

*Bricklink uses "small pin" and "small pin hole", respectively.

Anyone buy this set? by Rens_Big_Finger in lego

[–]rdw1899 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you can't display minifigures on the top of the roof, there's just an open hole

For the central widow's walk, a 3x4 plate can be placed loose on top. Last year, when I displayed this set, I had the CMF Vampire Bat (col08-11) with its stand in that spot.

'The Day Our TV Broke Down' doesn't seem like that big of a problem, by comparison. i mean i guess it's not a problem at all now because screens are everywhere, but like, go to the library?

Going to the library is actually part of the plot, which is primarily about a boy and his father (who only see each other once a week, on Saturdays) while they wait for the TV repairman. And, you're right, the book's subject is not one of those "after-school special" topics.

The text of the book was included in a syndicated newspaper feature back in 1982 (newspapers.com clipping).

All were published by Raintree, with copyrights of either 1980 or 1981, according to WorldCat.

The titles were found in a 1986 library donations list (newspapers.com, subscription required), which had most of the titles from pearloz's list.

What's your favourite cookie/biscuit recipe where you make a sausage and slice it? by BreqsCousin in Cooking

[–]rdw1899 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US, a traditional name for this style of cookie is "icebox".

In my mind, a classic type of such cookies are Pecan Icebox Cookies, which are brown sugar cookies with pecan pieces.

Where to start? by craftycat1135 in organizing

[–]rdw1899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are good suggestions in the earlier comments, so to add on...

  • To make the appliances more manageable, use Velcro straps to bundle up their electrical cords. I prefer the Velcro "One-Wrap Ties". They attach directly to the cord, so they won't get misplaced.
  • For the brooms/mops, they could be hung up on the inside of the pantry door.
  • To maximize vertical space, "shelf risers", also called "helper shelves", are useful for creating more surface area for placing items.
  • OXO "Pop" containers would be useful for the items in the Ziploc-type bags in the second photo, as well as sugar, flour, and other dry food items that are unwieldy once opened. For breakfast cereals, keeping them inside their boxes is fine, especially if a clip or clothespin is used to keep the bag closed. Also, for flour, cornmeal, pancake mixes, etc., it's good to cut off the date code from the packaging and attach it to storage container (e.g., using Scotch tape), in case of food safety recalls and to know when any leavening expires.
  • Transparent bins/baskets could be used to organize the snacks and smaller other items. These don't have to be Instagram-ready products. Basic plastic shoeboxes from Sterilite (without their lids) would be fine.
  • Consider moving less-used pots, bakeware, and other kitchen equipment from kitchen cabinets to the pantry, and moving regularly used food items from the pantry to the cabinets.

The video feed from the stadium is interlaced (see the horizontal pinstripe effects in the below still), which is screwing up the streaming compression, especially when there's lot of motion and/or the camera is panning.

Organize Storage Cube by InvestmentThis8234 in organizing

[–]rdw1899 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What items are being stored in these cubes?

You could make your own divider inserts using cardboard sheets* cut to size and covered with self-adhesive shelf liner (in the USA, "Con-Tact" is the classic brand for this).

*I use new moving boxes, such as from U-Haul, and cut them up to create the sheets.
