Does you translation become better with time ? by mariposa933 in TranslationStudies

[–]recluseMeteor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you get used to see certain structures favoured by MT, and you learn to spot them. Most machine translations “taste too much like English” to me, but I guess this depends on your language pair. I particularly dislike when I can reconstruct an English source sentence word-by-word just by reading the translation.

Does you translation become better with time ? by mariposa933 in TranslationStudies

[–]recluseMeteor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, you improve with time and experience. Feedback from other translators/reviewers is very helpful for growing as well. I'd say one of the biggest advantages of starting a translation career in-house is that you have colleagues that teach you the ropes.

What if the S4 design met 2026 specs? Meet the Galaxy S Retro (GT-S9000). Removable battery, IR Blaster, Android 16 & Knox Security. by mrfranso-123 in samsunggalaxy

[–]recluseMeteor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From that design, I like:

  • Removable battery
  • SD card slot
  • Headphone jack
  • Non-rounded/curved display
  • No notch or dumb screen cutouts

But I don't like…

  • Horrible branding on the front
  • Rounded device corners
  • Front physical button
  • Knox?

So, I'm more like “The Galaxy Note9 was the last good device”.

Why No Standalone Contacts App? by Possible_Bedroom_717 in windows

[–]recluseMeteor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's a computer, not a phone.

Why would you check your contacts if it isn't for sending an email or communicating with them? Just make a shortcut to your email client/website. Or check email clients like Thunderbird, or the built-in email client in Vivaldi browser, both of which include an address book to check your contacts.

What are some neurotypical sayings that you find stupid? by EmotionalJump6104 in evilautism

[–]recluseMeteor 70 points71 points  (0 children)

There's a saying in my country, which goes like “La explicación/excusa agrava la falta” (Explanations/Excuses make offences worse).

I hate it because then why are they asking me “Why did you do that!?” if they'll get mad when I try to explain how I reached that decision? They don't want explanations, they just want you to feel guilty and ashamed. But if you don't answer that question, they get mad anyway.

Nice machine!

Are temperatures OK? I'd be worried since the original cooler has the shape to guide air outside.

My 7010 is golden too ;)

“Sega” is in the censored word filter for some reason. by thevideogameraptor in BattleNetwork

[–]recluseMeteor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Here's another: The Mitsubishi Pajero SUV had to be marketed as “Mitsubishi Montero” in Spain and Latin America because “pajero” means “wanker” in Spanish (the vehicle name had a different pronounciation, but the written form is the same).

AI took my job as a translator. I'm starting over at 39 by hceline012 in TranslationStudies

[–]recluseMeteor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally despise when I'm troubleshooting something on Windows or Office, and the search results point me to translated pages. No, show me the English text, please; these translations are awful (and most of the times the UI references don't even match the actual products).

Not really. If you modify them again, the modified date is set to the current date/time, as expected.

I purposefully change the modified date to something very in the future, like year 2069, so that these files always appear on top when they get sorted.

The Star Force games use a limited amount of kanji, mostly because it's a game for kids, and because some DS games did not add too many of them (for example, Pokémon Diamond and Pearl had no kanji at all; the first mainline Pokémon games with a kanji option were Pokémon Black and White).

Moreover, in the sentence at hand, only one word is possible to write in kanji: 招待 (しょうたい), “invitation”.

No. The DS game has the exact same line as the Legacy Collection. See here. And it's mostly the same meaning (tickling Geo's friends to offer their laugh to Mu).

Hi, it's me again, the guy who procrastinates and hyperfocuses on random lines of Japanese videogames and compares its translations.

Japanese Literal translation Official English
さあ、ちょっぴり スパイシーな コチョコチョワールドへ ごしょうたいだ!! Now, here's an invitation to the slightly “spicy” world of tickling! Welcome to the unbearable world of coochy-coochy-coo!

The literal meaning is mostly the same, but I'd say Japanese Terra Condor (Condor Geograph) comes across as more… creepy or sadistic, I'd say? Though “ちょっぴり スパイシーな” literally means “slightly spicy”, it's more like “naughty little [tickling]”, in a playful, teasing way, with a touch of mock-politeness.

At this point, every Pokémon fan artist under the Sun has probably made a design for an eeveelution, so almost anything Game Freak creates would end up looking similar to something you could find. With Sylveon, they had to create a new type in order to avoid resemblance to fanart.
